Mikaël Kingsbury captures dual moguls gold in 1st event since Beijing Olympics | CBC Sports

Mikaël Kingsbury of Deux-Montagnes, Que., gained a measure of revenge against Walter Wallberg, upending the 2022 Olympic moguls champion to win Saturday’s dual event in World Cup action in Valmalenco, Italy.

It was the first race for Kingsbury since capturing a moguls silver medal at the Winter Games in Beijing last month to become the first male freestyle skier to earn three Olympic medals.

The 2018 Olympic gold medallist amassed 82.18 points in his Feb. 5 performance in China, trailing Wallberg of Sweden, who scored 83.23 at Genting Snow Park in Zhangjiakou, China, for his first major win on the senior circuit

The 29-year-old Kingsbury was attempting to become the second men’s moguls skier to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals after fellow Canadian Alex Bilodeau achieved the feat in 2010 and 2014.

Kingsbury’s win Saturday was his fifth of the season and 72nd on the World Cup circuit in 102 competitions. He is attempting to win a 10th straight Crystal Globe as overall season winner.

Japan’s Ikuma Horishima, Kingsbury’s friend who won Olympic bronze last month, was second on Saturday following a crash after landing his first jump in the final.

Steward Wins Three Events as Kansas Tops Iowa State in Big 12 Dual Finale

The Kansas Jayhawks traveled north to take on their Big 12 Rivals, the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday. Kansas played spoiler to ISU’s senior day, winning handily 180 to 120 in what was both teams’ final dual meet of the 2021-2022 season.

Leading the charge for Kansas was senior Kate Steward, who won all three of her individual events on the day. The Bartlesville, Oklahoma native started her meet with a dominant win in the breast, touching first in 1:01.75 to win by nearly 2 seconds. She completed the breaststroke sweep with a 4 and a half second victory in the 200 breast, swimming a 2:13.89 to nearly miss the 2015 pool record. The senior closed out her meet with a win in the 200 IM, touching first in 2:04.49.

Steward’s season bests sit at 1:00.68 in the 100 breast, 2:11.71 in the 200 breast and 1:59.90 in the 200 IM. While she currently sits outside of NCAA qualification range in all three races, if she nails her taper at the Big 12 Championships in a couple of weeks Steward could have a realistic shot at punching her ticket to Atlanta in March.

Kansas was also dominant on the boards, with junior All American Jiaya Chen sweeping both the 1 and 3 meter events. The Zhanjiang, China native posted a 335.65 in the one meter to win by nearly 30 points and later returned to win the 3 meter with a score of 359.55. Both of her efforts broke the Iowa State pool records, with the 1 meter record previously being set in 2016, and Chen setting the previous 3 meter record in 2020.

Iowa State was led by sophomore distance swimmer Brinley Horras, who swept both the 1000 and 500 on Saturday. In the 1000, the Ames, Iowa native swam a patient race, not leading until the 300 yard mark, but over the next 300 opened up a 5 second lead by the 600 turn. She went on to win by over 6 seconds, touching in 10:16.80. She later returned to win the 500 free as well, but this time led wire to wire after touching in 5:00.88. Horras’ season bests sit at 10:07.73 in the 1000 and 4:54.66 in the 500.

Iowa State senior diver Michelle Schlossmacher Smith also impressed for the Cyclones, taking down the program record in the 3 meter event. The Roseville, Minnesota native broke the Cyclone program record, which had stood since the 2008-2009 season, in the prelims with a score of 348.83.

Both programs will now take two and a half weeks off from competition before heading to Morgantown, West Virginia for the Big 12 Championships.
