Clan of Marcos Jr.’s wife join Leni-Kiko volunteer events in Bacolod, Iloilo
These Ledesma and Araneta relatives ‘stand up and speak up for those who are voiceless against tyranny, kleptocracy, rotten political dynasties, impunity, corruption, plunder, extra-judicial killings, and selfish political interests’
ILOILO CITY, Philippines – Members of the Ledesma and Araneta clans in Iloilo, Negros Occidental, and Makati City turned out in droves for Vice President Leni Robredo and Kiko Pangilinan on Saturday, April 30.
In Iloilo, supporters sponsored the morning mass at the Jaro Cathedral and afterwards held a unity walk in nearby thoroughfares within Jaro district, followed by a house-to-house campaign.
Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, himself a Ledesma, also showed up to the unity walk organized by supporters at the Capitol Lagoon in Bacolod City.
A “palugaw” and person-to-person events were also held in the City of Smiles for Public Utility Vehicle drivers and other passers-by, coupling Robredo’s signature porridge with interpersonal conversations heavily encouraged by their campaign.
Also present there were Betsy Ledesma-Coscolluela, wife of former governor Lito Coscolluela who is one of the key figures of the Robredo-Pangilinan campaign in Negros Island.
Those in Makati held their own unity walk at the Jaime Velasquez Park in Salcedo Village.
According to Felix Golez, one of the main organizers of the three-city event, around 500 people were estimated attending the activities in all 3 cities combined.
Why is this interesting? Liza Araneta-Marcos, wife of Robredo’s rival Ferdinand Marcos Jr., also identifies in belonging to these two clans. Her paternal grandfather is Manuel S. Araneta and her paternal grandmother is Rosario Ledesma.
Liza appears in the Araneta family tree as part of the eighth generation descendants of Don Jose de Araneta, a Basque from Spain who arrived in the Philippines and died in 1746 in Mindanao. She also has another connection to the region through her mother, Milagros Cacho.
Other members of the Araneta clan with ties to the Marcoses include Gregorio Araneta, husband of Ferdinand Jr.’s sister Irene, and Ilocos Norte Vice Governor Cecile Araneta-Marcos, wife of their late cousin Mariano II.
The “Ledesmas for Leni-Kiko” say that they are composed of Ledesma family members who “stand up and speak up for those who are voiceless against tyranny, kleptocracy, rotten political dynasties, impunity, corruption, plunder, extra-judicial killings, and selfish political interests.”
“The family philosophy of the Ledesmas is Non Sibi Sed Cunctis – not for oneself, but for all. True to their creed, the Ledesma family has been known over the centuries, tracing their ancestors to Jaro in the late 1700s, to be leaders in socio-civic, political, religious, business, and philanthropic arenas,” they said in a statement.
“At what is considered the fight of this generation, the family remains firm and steadfast in upholding altruistic values for nation-building – something they share with Leni and Kiko – the desire to serve the people first above all else,” they added. – Rappler.com

Canada Day event at Riverside Park is back in-person for 2022.
Canada Day festivities at Riverside Park for the first time in two years.
The City of Kamloops announced the return of the in-person Canada Day event in Riverside Park for 2022 after the two year pandemic induced hiatus, and are currently accepting applications from community groups looking to get involved.
“The annual in-person event in Riverside Park was dearly missed in 2020 and 2021,” Dewi Evans, the city’s community events coordinator said.
“For the past two years, we hosted virtual events with strong support; however, it was no match for the vibrancy that the community typically brings to Riverside Park.”
In a statement, the city said the full day event with start with a pancake breakfast, followed by arts, culture displays, and community festivities.
The city said it’s looking for organizations to add to the event and priority will be given to ‘engaging, interactive booths and organizations that promote a creative message of community spirit.’
The city expects for 30,000 people to attend the Canada day event.
The application form to apply for the festival can be found here, and must be submitted by May 2.
Asian Tour and LET join forces for two new events
Trust Golf, part of the TCT Corporation, will host the Asian Mixed Cup and the Asian Mixed Stableford Challenge as part of the Trust Golf Asian Mixed Series. The tournaments will see the leading stars on the Asian Tour and LET compete for US$1.5 million in the space of a fortnight.
The innovative events will be played back-to-back on the Waterside Course at Siam Country Club near Pattaya – one of Asia’s finest golf clubs which has hosted numerous prestigious international championships and is the home of the Honda LPGA Thailand – from April 7-10 and April 13-16.
Both events will feature 60 Asian Tour players and 60 LET players, along with 24 sponsor invitations, playing for the same prize fund and trophy. Each tournament will offer a prize fund of US$750,000, along with Official World Golf Ranking points.
Race to Costa del Sol and Order of Merit points will be awarded to players from both Tours respectively.
“These new tournaments are important steps in the continued growth of the LET as we offer 33 playing opportunities to our members in 2022 and we look forward to working together with Trust Golf and the Asian Tour at Siam Country Club in April.” – Ladies European Tour CEO, Alexandra Armas.
The support of Trust Golf as title sponsor is a huge boost for the ground-breaking co-sanctioned events. Dr. Prin Singhanart, founder of the Thai-based technology enterprise and the Trust Golf Tour, is passionate about innovative golf formats. With the Thailand Mixed, which will be played in late March, followed by the Asian Mixed in April, Dr Prin hopes to drive towards a World Mixed Championship one day.
Trust Golf founder, Dr Prin Singhanart commented: “I’m always extremely keen on mixed formats as golf is the only sport allowing people of all ages and genders to play together. I would like to provide a pathway for Thai talents both male and female.
“If a female golfer wins outright, they will earn membership to the LET, and if a male golfer wins outright, they will earn membership to the Asian Tour. With the Trust Golf Tour affiliated membership programme, it will allow the players to be ranked on both order of merits.
“The Asian Tour is extremely excited to add a new format of play to our tournament schedule.” – Asian Tour CEO, Cho Minn Thant.
“I believe that sport has always been a soft power diplomacy approach to international relations. Through the attraction of its unique culture, Thailand has such potential to boost that in sports, especially with our strength in Thai Boxing and golf. This can contribute to future trade and investment by strengthening trust and awareness of our country’s capabilities.”
Alexandra Armas, CEO of the LET, said: “We look forward to collaborating with Dr Prin and her vision to nurture the next generation of Thai talent. These new tournaments are important steps in the continued growth of the LET as we offer 33 playing opportunities to our members in 2022 and we look forward to working together with Trust Golf and the Asian Tour at Siam Country Club in April.”
Cho Minn Thant, CEO and Commissioner of the Asian Tour, said: “The Asian Tour is extremely excited to add a new format of play to our tournament schedule. We thank Trust Golf for making it possible for the Asian Tour to stage its first mixed events, which will resonate strongly with golf fans in the region.
“It is also an exciting opportunity to collaborate with the Ladies European Tour for the first time and pay our maiden visit to the highly-regarded Siam Country Club.”

Event firms join metaverse bandwagon to offer immersive experience
Instead, it purchased digital real estate in Decentraland, a blockchain-based game that allows players to interact with each other through virtual avatars in a 3D virtual world and buy land within this virtual world, and even sell or rent it to other brands or individuals.
The virtual space Atom bought is now the company’s metaverse office, which it hopes to use to reach out to global clients and use as a place for ‘metaverse’ events and interactions too in the near future.
Yash Kulshreshtha, the national creative head of Mumbai-based firm, says those in their early 30s are already too old for today’s internet. He believes that much like how the older generation found the shift from newspapers to online articles drastic, the ‘90s generation is today content with what the present internet, or Web 2.0, already offers.
While the company has four virtual avatars to cater to this virtual space right now, Kulshreshtha says that one day, this facility could become just as valuable as the agency’s physical office – and in fact help the company expand its footprint beyond India. “The thing with the metaverse is that the young generation growing up today will find it completely natural,” he insists.
The ‘metaverse’, as of today, remains a vaguely defined and understood area of technology. While some, such as Meta (erstwhile Facebook), Nvidia, Microsoft and the likes have showcased virtual worlds with avatars that resemble the real person, items scaled to the real world, replication of actual areas, roads and much more, others have often used the ‘metaverse’ as a catch phrase given all the hype and attention around it.
In the distant future, the metaverse is supposed to be a single virtual world which runs parallel to our physical world, akin to worlds imagined in movies like Ready Player One.
Atom is just one among the many event management companies that are exploring this space.
In January 2022, Punjab-based events agency, Cryptic Entertainments, hosted what they claimed to be ‘India’s first metaverse concert’ on Ethereum-based 3D virtual platform, Somnium Space. About 30 individuals ‘attended’ the concert by 23-year-old Indian singer, Sparsh Dangwal. Since then, India has also seen its first ‘metaverse wedding’.
Such events show a rising trend of curiosity among individuals and organisers alike in terms of exploring a new technology. As Gautam Seth, co-founder and director of virtual event company Dreamcast Global, said, “Over the past year or so, there are many event companies in India that are trying to understand how the metaverse can apply to events. Some of the early movers are looking at ready metaverse platforms such as Decentraland and Spatial, and use their non-fungible token (NFT) avatars for their characters to design an event.”
Dinesh Dulhani, founder of Immersive Realities, a firm that develops immersive virtual experiences, adds a similar narrative. Over the past decade, Dulhani has offered virtual reality (VR)-based experiences in events that involve product showcases, or converted an audio-visual clip into a VR one. Today, Dulhani says that there is an increasing volume of attention in this space, for sure. “I have received enquiries and interest from the Singapore-based Publicis Group regarding hosting a metaverse event, and I have pitched such ideas to many of my clients as well,” he said.
Atom’s Kulshreshtha said that as of now, he has received queries from an Indian e-commerce platform regarding creating a metaverse platform, and has also pitched a metaverse concept to an FMCG brand regarding one of their promotional activities. Such plans, though, are still in early-stage conversations – showcasing the flipside of the ‘metaverse’ buzzword.
“Numerous brands are looking at a slightly toned-down solution, or more of a VR experience rather than the full-scale metaverse experience that platforms such as Decentraland provide. These brands typically want more control over what an attendee in their virtual event can do,” said Seth.
Alongside brands being conscious of what these experiences can bring to the table, Seth further said the technology is also a hindrance. “Today, the basic cardboard-like VR headsets are not good enough for metaverse events, because they are not really interactive. As an organizer, I cannot expect all individuals attending a metaverse event to have an Oculus Rift or similar VR headsets, along with a powerful computer, at home,” he added.
Dulhani, in fact, believes that even over the next couple of years, even as more companies express interest in ‘metaverse’ events, the experience will largely remain a non-VR one. “Back when Facebook acquired Oculus, everyone thought VR has arrived. But it still failed to get large-scale adoption from consumers, because of the issues with the headset. Over the past 4-5 years, VR has seen increasing adoption in enterprise use cases and gaming, but for it to become truly mainstream, the hardware has to evolve a lot,” he said.
To sum up, Kulshreshtha believes it is obviously a nascent phase for agencies and companies exploring the metaverse. “It may seem like a small augmentation of the virtual interaction experience that we have today, but for the generation that will follow us, interacting through a metaverse workplace will feel more natural. Such opportunities will let us advertise our products well beyond our present market, and take our agency global,” Kulshreshtha said.
“Look at Nike’s investment in RTFKT. If such big brands are making a push for NFTs and the metaverse, there’s definitely a big scope in the industry,” he added.

‘Citizen scientists’ invited to join global bird watching event
MONTREAL —
Saturday marked the beginning of the 25th annual “Great Backyard Bird Count” — a global birding event where all “citizen scientists” are welcome to participate with no experience necessary.
People all over the world are looking to the skies, and of course, their own backyards, to admire and note the birds in their communities.
Organizers hope the event sheds light on nearby bird species, and how their ecosystems have changed.

Holiday Bowl Leaders Join in Campaign to Draw More Top Sporting Events to San Diego
With support from the San Diego Tourism Authority and Tourism Marketing District, Holiday Bowl officials have launched an effort to attract more high-profile sporting events to the region.
Sports San Diego will serve as the primary marketing tool for the area as a sports destination, while attempting to drive visitor demand through recruiting and supporting “world-class sports events.”
San Diego has played host to some of the sporting world’s largest events, most recently the U.S. Open in golf and the Breeders Cup, both in 2021. Other past events include the Super Bowl, X-Games and MLB’s All-Star Game.
San Diego Bowl Game Association CEO Mark Neville noted the organization’s success in bringing events to the region, including the Navy vs. Notre Dame football game in 2018 and 2020’s successful bid on the 2022 Transplant Games of America.
“A few years ago, we took a strategic look at how we can do more for the community and that resulted in growing our scope to host more events …” Neville said. “Being the primary organization for marketing San Diego as a sports destination is a natural for us.”
Founding business partners include Qualcomm, Kaiser Permanente, General Dynamics NASSCO, and Rady Children’s Hospital.
According to Tourism Economics, nearly 180 million people traveled to a sports event in the U.S. as a participant or spectator in 2019, resulting in $45.1 billion in economic impact.
Locally, it is estimated that sports events generate over 300,000 hotel room nights each year.
Julie Coker, president and CEO of the San Diego Tourism Authority called sports “a critical component of our local tourism industry, attracting more visitors while cementing San Diego’s reputation for health and wellness.”
She added, “the creation of Sports San Diego will help us up our game as we work together to grow this market.”
