Vaccine, microchip clinic planned Saturday in New Kensington

Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley will host a vaccine and microchip clinic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the shelter parking lot, 730 Church St., New Kensington.

Services available and cost are: one-year rabies vaccine, $15; DHPP 5-in-1 canine vaccine, $20; FvRCP 3-in-1 feline vaccine, $20; and microchip, $20. Cash only will be accepted.

Animals must be at least three months old to receive a rabies shot. Dogs must be on a non-retractable leash and cats must be in a carrier. Park and walk up outside the clinic.


Free lunch offered Wednesday at Allegheny Valley Church of God

Allegheny Valley Church of God, 216 Catalpa St., New Kensington, will serve free grab-and-go lunches at noon Wednesday.

Bingo fundraiser to benefit Lower Valley food bank

Lower Valley Community Food Bank will host a spring fling bingo at 7 p.m. May 14 at the Acme Club, 230 Herron Ave., Harmar.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Cost is $25 and includes six cards for each of the 10 games, soft drinks, water and popcorn. Extra cards, tickets for special games, lottery sure tip tickets and 50/50 tickets will be sold. The kitchen will sell hot dogs, sauerkraut, ham barbeques, soft pretzels and Glen’s Frozen Custard and there will be a cash bar.

Bring a non-perishable food item for the food back to receive a free extra bingo card. For tickets, visit lowervalleyfoodbank.org/bingo. Proceeds will benefit the food bank that assists residents of Springdale, Springdale Township, Cheswick, Harmar and sections of Indiana Township and West Deer.


Volunteer opportunities available with Family Hospice

Family Hospice, Part of UMPC, serves patients and families at end of life in Allegheny, Butler and Westmoreland counties and is recruiting local volunteers.

Opportunities include patient companion, caregiver respite, bereavement support and special events. Visits would be once per week for one to four hours. Volunteers are required to receive tuberculosis testing and a flu vaccine, and complete paperwork and training .

Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania is seeking 501(c)3 non-profit organizations to apply to receive Give Back voucher cards for its thrift stores in southwest Pennsylvania and north central West Virginia.

Literacy event planned for fathers and children

Allegheny Family Network and the Greater Pittsburgh Festival of Books will host a Fathers For Literacy event from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 23 at Highlands Community Center, 701 California Ave., Natrona Heights, Harrison.

Fathers and their children age 2 to 12 will participate in activities, crafts and storytelling. Each family will build and customize a book book, review books onsite and select free books to take home.

Annual 5K run/walk to raise funds for St. Margaret Foundation

The 34th annual St. Margaret Foundation Brian Demchak Hope Challenge Run 5K Run/Walk will be May 15 to 21.

Participants will complete a virtual 5K anytime from May 15 to 21 on their own outside, on a treadmill, dance floor or in a pool.

Two in-person events are also planned. The RIDC O’Hara Wellness Walk will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the UPMC St. Margaret Lunchtime Wellness Walk will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 18. Registration is required by April 22 for receive an event t-shirt and finisher’s medal in the mail.

April Fool Mystery Luncheon planned April 3

Victorian Vandergrift Museum and Historical Society will host an April Fool Mystery Luncheon at 1 p.m. April 3 in the social hall of Pleasant View Church of the Brethren, 1156 Pleasant View Drive, Parks.

Servers will present a menu with 25 items on it. Diners must select one item from each of the five courses to be served. The actual names of each item will not be shown and diners must order based on a word, phrase or saying that hints at the actual item.

Volunteer opportunities available with Family Hospice

Family Hospice, a part of UMPC, serves patients and families at end of life in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington and Westmoreland counties and is seeking respite and companion volunteers and pet therapy volunteers.

Visits would be once per week for one to four hours. Volunteers are required to receive tuberculosis testing and a flu vaccine, and complete paperwork and orientation.

Goodwill offers free programs for young people

YouthWorks, a program of Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania, offers free assistance to young people age 18 to 24 who need help finding a job, enrolling in a community college or university or are looking to make a career change.

Programs available include:

• Retail Training: for young people who are looking to begin a career in retail but need work experience. This is a 12-week program that pays $10.50 to $10.75 per hour while working in a Goodwill store. Participants who complete the program are guaranteed a job in a Goodwill store in their community.

• LifeLaunch: Ignite: targets young adults who are or have been justice involved and want to work toward a career based on their interests and skills. The program includes an initial assessment and evaluation, job training, support with job search and transportation.

• IMPACT Job Search: for young adults who are considering college or starting a job search.

Applications being accepted for Rotary scholarships

The Rotary Club of Leechburg will award community service scholarships to students living in the Leechburg and Kiski Area school districts who excel in community volunteerism and plan to further their post secondary education.

Applicants must be seniors at Leechburg or Kiski Area high schools, or be home schooled, attend cyber school, private/parochial schools or full-day technical schools and live within one of these districts.

They must exemplify the spirit of Rotary and community volunteerism by way of their involvement, leadership and accomplishments in community projects throughout their high school career. The amount and number of scholarships awarded will be determined by the Rotary Club.

Applications may be obtained from school guidance counselors or Robert DiCola, chairman, at DiColaInsurance and Financial Agency, 146 Market St., Leechburg. Completed applications should be mailed or delivered to DiCola at the agency by March 31.


HOPE Center accepting donations for its SAF-T pet kennel

The Alle-Kiski HOPE Center offers a Sheltering Animals and Families Together (SAF-T) Kennel to victims of domestic violence who are fleeing abuse with their pets.

The kennel allows families to bring their pets with them safely to an on-site kennel during their shelter stay. Supplies needed include small bowls for cats and dogs, canned cat and kitten food, dry kitten food, small litter boxes, clumping litter, small cat toys, small cat beds, small to medium cat carriers, dog leashes, small to medium dog beds, flea and tick control for cats and dogs and gift cards for PetSmart and Petco. All items should be new.
