Watch the Sky: From Meteor Showers to Planet Conjunctions — Best Sky Events to Catch in April 2022 | The Weather Channel - Articles from The Weather Channel | weather.com

Sky chart showing the close conjunction of Mars and Saturn before sunrise on April 4.

(NASA/JPL-Caltech)

If you can tolerate the scorching temperatures, there’s a bright side to April’s summer days, especially if you are a star-gazer: stunning, clear skies.

They provide an impeccable chance to cherish the beauty of our cosmic neighbourhood, and this April has some big astronomical events in store — ranging from meteor showers to the conjunction of planets.

Here’s a complete list, so you can clear your calendars in advance and pin down the dates:

April 1

On this day, planets Mars, Saturn, and Venus will be positioned in a straight line in the southeastern sky.

Also, this day marks the New Moon phase, making it the ideal time to capture faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters with no interference from moonlight.

April 4

Saturn and Mars will make a close approach during the dawn and be visible in the same field of the telescope. The pair can be spotted in the constellation Capricornus before sunrise.

April 16

This would be the night of a fully illuminated Moon. Depending on which part of the world you live in, this particular Full Moon is also referred to as the Pink Moon, Sprouting Grass Moon, the Growing Moon, Fish Moon and the Egg Moon.

April 21-22

Sky-watchers can witness peak Lyrid meteor shower on these nights. Named after the constellation Lyra, it is regarded as one of the oldest recorded meteor showers.

The annual meteor shower is usually active between April 16 to 25, and produces over 20 meteors per hour on peak nights.

All you need to watch them is a clear sky, away from city lights.

April 25

Early risers will be able to spot Saturn, Mars, Venus, Jupiter and the Moon in the morning sky. The alignment can be spotted on the eastern horizon.

April 29

Planet Mercury will reach its Greatest Eastern Elongation of 20.6 degrees from the Sun. The planet can be spotted in the western sky just after sunset.

April 30

A partial solar eclipse will gaze the sky, but it will only be visible from southern South America, parts of Antarctica, and over the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Additional sources report the potential for heightened Team GO Rocket activity from Sunday, April 3, 2022, to Thursday, April 7, 2022. Stay alert!

Spring into Spring

Sustainability Week

From Wednesday, April 20, 2022, to Monday, April 25, 2022, Trainers will be able to reflect on the importance of sustainability while another Pokémon originally discovered in the Alola region makes its Pokémon debut!

Spotlight Hours

In the month of April, Pokémon Spotlight Hour will take place every Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time, and each will spotlight a different Pokémon and a special bonus!

  • April 5: Stunky | 2× Candy for transferring Pokémon
  • April 12: Bunnelby | 2× XP for evolving Pokémon
  • April 19: Oddish | 2× Catch Stardust
  • April 26: Sunshine Form Cherrim | 2× Catch XP

Raid Hours

Every Wednesday in April, a Raid Hour event will occur from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time. The following Pokémon will be featured:

  • April 6: Therian Forme Thundurus
  • April 13: Tapu Bulu
  • April 20: Tapu Bulu
  • April 27: Therian Forme Landorus

This month isn’t quite as action-packed as the last few months, but it may be the calm before the storm. Pokemon GO is known to kick into high gear as soon as the warm weather arrives, so players can expect May and June to be in high gear when they arrive. As always, be sure to keep an eye on the today view to stay up-to-date on an ongoing bonuses or challenges that pop up throughout the month.

That should be just about everything players know about the upcoming month, but we should learn more about other upcoming events during the coming days of the Season of Alola. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!

Pokemon GO is available now on mobile devices.

WILTON — The mission committee of the First Congregational Church will be hosting numerous events in April with all proceeds going to Ukrainian relief efforts.

On Sunday afternoon, March 27, Janine Winn of Temple was at the church to share experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ukraine, the impact the current situation is having on her and those she knows there, and possible ways to help.

Winn’s presentation may be viewed on the church’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/search/posts/?q=first%20congregational%20church%20of%20wilton.

There will be a grand re-opening of The Church Mouse Thrift Shop 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2. The shop, located in the church basement will then be open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday and Tuesday. All items available in the shop are by donation.

“There are tons of women’s clothes, we’re shifting from winter to spring and summer items,” committee member Pam Brown said Tuesday, March 29. “There are lovely children’s things, clothing and shoes.”

A large variety of kitchen “stuff” is stocked, she said. Should there be an emergency need for items – such as after a fire, call Brown at 645-2091.

“Please go through your attic and closets to see what you have and don’t need,” Dawn Girardin, committee chair said Wednesday.

Anyone wishing to donate items for the thrift shop may leave them on the covered porch at the church or call Brown.

A church member who wishes to remain anonymous will match all funds raised in the thrift shop during April.

A bake sale will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16. “There will be lots of goodies for Easter Sunday,” Girardin said.

From 5 p.m. until food runs out Saturday, April 30, a potluck supper is planned. Cooked ham will be included and there will be take-out or eat-at-the-church options, committee member Al Kaplan said Tuesday. Meals are by donation. To reserve meals call the church at 645-2535 or Girardin, 585-2130.

“We’re asking the community to pull together, we need to raise as much money as quickly as we can,” Girardin said. “We want to try to feed displaced people, the resistance fighters lacking resources.”

Research is underway to determine the best, fastest way to get the funds to those in need, she noted.

“I hope we can raise a lot of money,” Girardin said. “I am sick about this, really.”

Carrboro celebrates Earth Hour, looks forward to environmental events in April

Carrboro celebrates Earth Hour, looks forward to environmental events in April

The Town of Carrboro encouraged residents to go dark for an hour on Saturday to celebrate Earth Hour.

Residents who took part were asked to turn off any electric, non-essential lights — except for ones that affect public safety — in order to support awareness about climate action on a global and local scale.

This is Carrboro’s 12th consecutive year participating in Earth Hour, a global effort organized through the World Wildlife Fund. Cities across the world join in at 8:30 p.m local time to show that collective action can bring about positive change.

“It’s a global movement just to unite folks on all these environmental issues and how we can continue to protect Mother Earth,” Carrboro Town Council Member Barbara Foushee said.

This year’s resolution to recognize Earth Hour was brought forth by Carrboro Town Council Member Randee Haven-O’Donnell during a regular meeting on March 22. The matter passed unanimously.

They noted how Earth Hour has been historically practiced in individual homes but hope to see the event evolve to include more community-oriented action.

“It’s more about how we’re going to incorporate Earth Hour going forward to make it more robust,” they said.

Beyond the event

Earth Hour is part of larger efforts from Carrboro to educate residents on sustainable and healthy living.

Carrboro Town Council member Barbara Foushee said it can oftentimes be challenging to lead an environmentally-conscious lifestyle due to financial and time constraints.

“Everybody doesn’t have that same opportunity to focus on climate change everyday, because they’re focusing on life stuff,” Foushee said. “They’re focusing on paying the rent, having enough food, having enough money to meet those everyday, basic needs.”

Foushee noted that she wants to focus on education and conversations surrounding climate change for individuals in these situations.

To provide educational resources, the Town of Carrboro plans to hold several events throughout April.

Keep Carrboro Beautiful, which is set to take place on Earth Day on April 22, will encourage individuals to pick up trash across Carrboro.

“I think it’s important anywhere you live to make sure the place is clean and nice for the community and the citizens who live in it,” Galen Poythress, the recreation supervisor at Carrboro Recreation, Parks, & Cultural Resources, said.

Carrboro will also celebrate Earth Day through an event at Town Commons, where tables from environmental advocacy groups will provide education resources to attendees. In addition, there will also be food trucks serving plant-based options.

“It’s like a show and tell, so people don’t feel alone,” Haven- O’Donnell said. “So they see ‘Oh my goodness, all of this is going on in community and I can be a part of it or I can help others be a part of it.'”

O’Donnell said they look forward to increased participation in local events like Earth Hour.

“It just helps bring the focus back to the window that is closing for climate change and climate change mitigation, and every little thing that we do collectively helps,” Foushee said.
