Hokies advance 12 athletes in 7 events to NCAA Championships – Virginia Tech Athletics

Hokies advance 12 athletes in 7 events to NCAA Championships - Virginia Tech Athletics
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – On the final day of the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, Hokies track & field punched one final ticket to Hayward Field after an incredible four days of competition.

Securing her second straight qualification to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Essence Henderson had clinched her spot after two rounds before unleashing a massive throw in the discus on her third attempt. Henderson heaved the implement 58.83m (193′ 0″) in the last throw of the competition to finish as the No. 1 overall qualifier and shatter her own school record. Henderson’s mark ranks as the No. 6 throw in the NCAA this season as she looks to challenge for the title in Oregon.

In Tech’s other two events of Saturday, Chase Kappeler and Hailey Huston Myles both capped excellent seasons for the Hokies. Kappeler’s breakout year ended just short of advancing to Eugene in the 3,000m steeplechase, as Kappeler recovered from an early stumble in the race and fought back through the pack at Indiana’s Billy Hayes Track. In the triple jump, Huston Myles delivered a wind-legal personal best as she leaped 12.74m (41′ 9.75″). The graduate transfer closed out her career having left her mark on both the indoor and outdoor triple jump top lists for the Hokies.

With the East Prelims now complete, Tech track & field moves its attention to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, set to run June 8-11 at the historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. With 12 athletes ready to compete across the Hokies’ nine entries, the national finals look to be a thrill across the board.

As the first website not to be placed behind a paywall, we have made news about the International Olympic Committee, the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Commonwealth Games and other major events more accessible than ever to everybody.

insidethegames.biz has established a global reputation for the excellence of its reporting and breadth of its coverage. For many of our readers from more than 200 countries and territories around the world the website is a vital part of their daily lives. The ping of our free daily email alert, sent every morning at 6.30am UK time 365 days a year, landing in their inbox, is as a familiar part of their day as their first cup of coffee.

Even during the worst times of the COVID-19 pandemic, insidethegames.biz maintained its high standard of reporting on all the news from around the globe on a daily basis. We were the first publication in the world to signal the threat that the Olympic Movement faced from the coronavirus and have provided unparalleled coverage of the pandemic since.

As the world begins to emerge from the COVID crisis, insidethegames.biz would like to invite you to help us on our journey by funding our independent journalism. Your vital support would mean we can continue to report so comprehensively on the Olympic Movement and the events that shape it. It would mean we can keep our website open for everyone. Last year, nearly 25 million people read insidethegames.biz, making us by far the biggest source of independent news on what is happening in world sport.

Every contribution, however big or small, will help maintain and improve our worldwide coverage in the year ahead. Our small and dedicated team were extremely busy last year covering the re-arranged Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, an unprecedented logistical challenge that stretched our tight resources to the limit.

The remainder of 2022 is not going to be any less busy, or less challenging. We had the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing, where we sent a team of four reporters, and coming up are the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the Summer World University and Asian Games in China, the World Games in Alabama and multiple World Championships. Plus, of course, there is the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Unlike many others, insidethegames.biz is available for everyone to read, regardless of what they can afford to pay. We do this because we believe that sport belongs to everybody, and everybody should be able to read information regardless of their financial situation. While others try to benefit financially from information, we are committed to sharing it with as many people as possible. The greater the number of people that can keep up to date with global events, and understand their impact, the more sport will be forced to be transparent.

Roadrunners win three events on Saturday at J. Fred Duckett Twilight – UTSA Athletics

Roadrunners win three events on Saturday at J. Fred Duckett Twilight - UTSA Athletics
HOUSTON — Ingeborg Gruenwald, Sigrid Kleive and Jemuel Miller all were victorious at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight to headline action for the UTSA track & field teams on Saturday at Wendel D. Ley Track.

Gruenwald won the women’s long jump, Kleive took top honors in the women’s javelin and Miller soared to victory in the men’s triple jump for the Roadrunners in the one-day meet hosted by Rice.

Gruenwald led a 1-2 UTSA finish in the long jump, leaping 6.36 meters (20-10.5) to register her fourth triumph in the event this calendar year. The second-team indoor All-American logged her top jump of the competition on her second trip down the runway to finish ahead of sophomore teammate Oreoluwa Adamson, who measured 5.93m (19-5.5) for runner-up positioning.

Meanwhile, Kleive tossed the javelin to a distance of 41.52m (136-2) for a comfortable win ahead of Houston Baptist’s Kiley Kjellstrom’s second-place toss of 33.47m (109-9). It marked the second win of the outdoor campaign for the Norwegian, who also struck gold with a season-best 44.29m (145-4) measurement at the UTSA Invitational in March.

Miller also cruised to victory on Saturday evening in his specialty event. The freshman from Barbados broke the sand at a distance of 15.57m (51-1) on his sixth and final attempt of the competition, an improvement from a 15.35m (50-4.5) effort on his second try, a mark that gave the Conference USA Indoor champion and first-team indoor All-American the lead for good ahead of Texas Southern’s Chadrick Williams (14.63m/48-0).

Abby Balli bettered her personal-best time in the 1,500m with a runner-up clocking of 4:32.88 in the night session of track events. Racing near her hometown of Pasadena, the two-time C-USA mile medalist posted a PB for the third consecutive race in a little more than a week, as she finished second in 4:33.26 at the Beach Invitational last Saturday one day after clocking a then-career-best time of 4:35.24 at the Mt. SAC Relays in California.

UTSA displayed its depth in the horizontal jumps, as Christiaan Le Roux leaped to a personal-best mark of 7.49m (24-7) to finish third in the men’s long jump, while Miller took fifth with a leap of 7.28m (23-10.75), his top mark outdoors this year.

Back on the track, true freshman Jose Garcia sped to a fourth-place time of 10.65 in the men’s 100m, while Creshaun Cresser circled the oval in a time of 56.82, only one-hundredth of a second off her PB set last month at the UTSA Invitational, to cross fourth in the women’s 400m. Mackenzie Grimes was fourth in the women’s 400m hurdles in 1:01.22 and Brooke Lomax logged a career best while finishing seventh in the 800m in 2:12.20, an improvement from her 2:12.84 posted at the 2021 C-USA Outdoor.

In other field-event action, Acacia Astwood placed fifth in the women’s hammer with a throw of 48.36m (158-8), Paul Bouey was sixth in both the men’s shot put (16.32m/53-6.5) and discus (50.17m/164-7) and Zoe Shanklin earned sixth in the women’s shot put with a mark of 14.39m (47-2.5).

The Roadrunners will be back in action next Saturday, April 30, when they travel to College Station for the Alumni Muster in their final tune-up for the C-USA Outdoor Championships, which they will host on May 12-15 at Park West Athletics Complex.

KSU Director of Track and Field Cale McDaniel on the Weekend
“Another great opportunity for our program this weekend in Tuscaloosa and Atlanta. These young people took full advantage. Congrats to Kali, Anthony, Gavin, Sarah and all the men on both relays for establishing new school records. We also had some solid performances from Corbin McLean, Louise Tocays, Sultan Simms and many more. It’s always nice to mix it up with the big names in track and field and that’s exactly what we did this weekend. Now it’s time to fine tune and get ready for championship season.”
