A local organization is getting ready to hold its second annual Shree Krishna Janmashtami Celebration in Barrie

ISKCON Barrie will host the event Aug. 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kiwanis Pavilion, near the Southshore Centre.

“Janmashtami is the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna and is observed all over the world as the Festival of Joy,” ISKCON Barrie explained in a news release. “By this celebration in Barrie, we will be able to enchant the local Barrie crowd at the waterfront. The highlights of the event will be swinging the cradles of Baby Krishna, bhakti yoga, mantra meditation, ecstatic live music, dance performances, book distribution, and serving free vegetarian meals during the celebration.”

All proceeds from the event will go toward ISKCON Barrie’s “many areas of responsibility in the year to come.”

The organization educates children through lessons on morality and discipline through bhakti yoga and other art forms. It also runs a monthly Food 4 Life initiative to provide food to international students and, during the pandemic, has donated meals monthly to the local women’s shelter.

It also hosts monthly “Sanga” events to raise awareness about traditional Vedic culture and serves a free vegetarian feast to the public.

Plans for the upcoming year include classes for children and adults focusing on a variety of topics, including marriage, parenting, language and music.

Hundreds of kids participate in free fishing event in Barrie

Hundreds of kids participate in free fishing event in Barrie

Barrie’s waterfront was lined with hundreds of young anglers on Sunday for the return of a popular family-friendly fishing event.

After a two-year pandemic pause, the annual Rotary Kids Fishing Day returned to the shorelines of Kempenfelt Bay Sunday. The event, put together by the Kempenfelt Rotary Club, is a tradition the club looks forward to every year.

“It’s a fabulous way for us to give back to the community,” said Joan Bell-McKee, the club’s incoming president. “It’s a free day for the kids; free fishing rods, free bait, pizza supplied by Domino’s and all provided by our wonderful sponsorship by TD.”

Participants were required to register ahead of time, with nearly 1200 people expected to attend the event, which Bell-McKee says would not be possible without months of hard work by dedicated volunteers.

“This is an event that kids come back to year after year with their parents, their grandparents and their siblings,” she said. “It’s wonderful to have this event again. It’s something that everyone in our Rotary Club looks forward to.”

Georgian Bay Trillium Hunter Jumper Association marking 30th anniversary with shows in June and August, including stop at Essa Agriplex

NEWS RELEASE

GEORGIAN BAY TRILLIUM HUNTER JUMPER ASSOCIATION

*************************

The Georgian Bay Trillium Hunter Jumper Association is celebrating its 30th anniversary and returning to a full horse show season.

The Georgian Bay Hunter Jumper Show Circuit was established in 1992. Local facility owners felt the need for recognized competition in the area. Previously, horse owners and riders had to travel as far away as Toronto and London in order to compete at Ontario Equestrian sanctioned competitions.

The Trillium circuit is designed for riders and horses who are just making the step into recognized showing or, in some of our higher divisions, for those who are looking for high-quality shows without the time and financial commitment of other circuits.

We have divisions that are perfect for riders who are taking their first foray into horse showing or young horses being introduced to the world of showing. We also have a number of divisions available for you to set goals to progress to the next level.

There will be six shows at various locations in Simcoe County from June until August, culminating with a trip to the provincial championships in Ottawa. Equestrians of all ages and abilities will compete at horse shows at the Essa Agriplex, Rushmount Equestrian, the GNE Fairgrounds and Jack Pine Equestrian Centre. Spectators are welcome.
