Where to celebrate Gay Pride in Europe this June

Where to celebrate Gay Pride in Europe this June

Europe is set to explode with LGBTQ+ energy this June as Gay Pride events kick off in cities across the continent.

Many of the vibrant celebrations are returning after being cancelled for two years running amid the coronavirus pandemic. Here are five of the most spectacular Pride parties to put in your diary.

Baltic Pride in Vilnius, Lithuania

May 31st-June 5th

Kicking off the month is Baltic Pride in Lithuania’s capital. The annual LGBTQ+ event switches between Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania each year, with Vilnius hosting the celebrations in 2022.

It is the biggest LGBTQ+ human rights event in the Baltic states with participants travelling from all over Eastern Europe.

The event gets underway on May 31st with a flamboyant Rainbow Bus trip. The colourful music bus will carry representatives of the region’s LGBT community around Vilnius to encourage the participation of residents and visitors in the week’s events.

The main event will take place on June 4th with the March For Equality and Peace down Gediminas Avenue.

It will be followed by a sensational concert open to all Vilnius residents and visitors featuring singer Donny Montell, who represented Lithuania at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012, and international drag performers.

Roma Pride in Rome, Italy

June 6th-12th

After a two year hiatus, Roma Pride returns this June to the Italian capital. The event was first held in 1994 and now attracts thousands of revellers.

The festivities culminate in the Roma Pride Parade on June 11th. The event will see a stunning cavalcade of extravagantly decorated floats carrying DJs and dancers. The parade travels from Piazza della Republicca to Piazza Venezia and the Roman Forum.

On the way, it will pass some of the Eternal City’s most famous landmarks including the Colosseum. Thousands of visitors normally line the streets to watch the vibrant parade.

Following the parade, many participants will head to Via San Giovanni in Laterano, dubbed Rome’s gay street, to continue celebrating in its many gay bars.

The bars and clubs will host special events that extend the festivities well into the night when the whole street normally becomes one big open air party.

Cologne Gay Pride in Cologne, Germany

June 18th-July 3rd

One of the biggest LGBTQ+ events in Europe takes place each year in this historic German city. Cologne Gay Pride is the biggest LGBTQ+ celebration in Germany and will begin in mid June this year.

The events will last a little over two weeks and will include sports tournaments, conferences, readings and lots of parties.

The main events will take place during the first weekend of July. This sees the renowned CSD Street festival where the boisterous celebrations are spread throughout several of the city’s squares. The Pride Parade, another highlight of the festivities, will take place on July 3rd.

Warsaw Pride and Kyiv Pride in Warsaw, Poland

June 25th

The Polish city will see a particularly special Pride this year, as it hosts not only Warsaw Pride but also Kyiv Pride. In a gesture of solidarity with Ukraine, the participants of both events will march together in Warsaw.

The Equality Parade, which has been held in the capital since 2001, is the largest gay pride parade in central Europe. It sees thousands of participants walking with rainbow flags. The event is also expected to draw some 80,000 visitors to the city.

The event is particularly important for promoting LGBTQ+ rights in a country where the community is faced with conservative laws and policies.

Helsinki Pride in Helsinki, Finland

June 27th-July 3rd

Finland is known for its policies supporting LGBTQ+ inclusivity so it’s fitting that Helsinki will host the country’s biggest LGBTQ+ human rights celebration in June.

The event has seen a massive growth in participants over the years, especially at the parade.

There will be a cultural programme filled with events throughout the week. The festivities culminate in the parade on July 2nd which now sees thousands of marchers. Following the parade, there will be plenty of parties to keep the celebrations going.

Alongside the main Pride events, there will also be a Youth Pride Week for 13-25 year olds. There will be various activities and events held in LGBTQ+ organisations and youth centres.

Fleet Week in NYC: Parade of ships and other events return for weeklong celebration

Fleet Week in NYC: Parade of ships and other events return for weeklong celebration

Throughout Wednesday, CBS2 watched as the majestic parade of ships kicked off Fleet Week in New York City.

One ship not participating in the organized festivities is the Coast Guard Cutter Penobscot Bay, but that doesn’t mean its service should not be celebrated. CBS2’s Maurice Dubois got firsthand look at a day in the life on board that vessel.

He was welcomed aboard the 140-foot vessel in port in Bayonne.

“We’re going down the Verrazano Bridge, just to fly the U.S. flag and the Coast Guard flag to show we have a presence on the Hudson River,” Lt. Cmdr. Pat Bennett said.

Bennett said that presence is a cornerstone of the security, law enforcement, and rescue operations the ship is responsible for on the waterways.

“So this is your basic patrol mission, right?” Dubois asked.

“The Coast Guard is here to respond to any threat that there may be,” Bennett said.

In fact, the Penobscot Bay was called to a special mission just last month.

“The most recent threat that we’ve seen was the Brooklyn subway shooting. We were called at a moment’s notice,” Bennett said.

“What was your thought? Personally, you and the crew?” Dubois asked.

“So, for me, I thought, was this going to be the modern day 9/11? My mind went to that because we had no idea,” Bennett said.

It’s all part of the day-to-day Coast Guard operation, the nation’s first armed force on the sea, established in 1790.

There’s a crew of 18 men who currently live on board the Penobscot Bay.

“We have two berthing areas, on the port and starboard side,” Senior Enlisted Man Brandon Tahincioglu said.

Tahincioglu gave Dubois a tour of the ship, showing the captain’s quarters, and he explained a tradition on the bridge.

“Only the captain is allowed to sit in that chair,” Tahincioglu said.

Dubois also saw the mess hall, galley, engine room, and engineering control center.

The Penobscot Bay was built in 1985, one of nine ice-breaking tugs in the Coast Guard.

“Come January, it’s go-season for us,” Tahincioglu said.

Ice breaking is an essential area of responsibility to keep commercial boat traffic, including the transport of gas and home heating oil, moving from Albany to the lower Hudson Bay.

“What are your thoughts on working in a place like this?” Dubois asked.

“Every day you see something different, and you’re always learning, every time we go out,” one seaman said.

“You come to New York Harbor, see the skyline to know it’s there. There’s some significance there,” a seaman said.

“What does Fleet Week mean to you?” Dubois inquired.

“It’s one of the few times of the year that we’re at the forefront,” a seaman said.

“The Coast Guard usually doesn’t get that high recognition, but we are this week, and it’s awesome,” Bennett added.

Canada Day event and popular Mississauga festivals return to Celebration Square

Canada Day event and popular Mississauga festivals return to Celebration Square

After more than two years of cancellations and virtual events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several hugely popular festivals are returning to Celebration Square in Mississauga this spring and summer.

Also returning to the downtown core venue is the City of Mississauga’s annual Canada Day celebration, taking place July 1.

“For sure…there will be Canada Day. We’re looking at all the events and there may even be fireworks (on Canada Day), and there may be some entertainment. So, that’s great news,” Mayor Bonnie Crombie said in an Instagram interview Tuesday afternoon with insauga.com publisher Khaled Iwamura.

Crombie noted the first festival to return to the downtown core this year is Mississauga Polish Day, taking place May 28 from noon to 11 p.m. at Celebration Square. Admission is free.

“Then, there will be festivals throughout the summer as well,” added an enthused Crombie, who has been optimistic since January that Mississauga’s summer festivals would return.

Mississauga Polish Day is the city’s annual Polish cultural festival, celebrating Polish-Canadian contribution towards Canada’s rich cultural mosaic, organizers say.

“Visitors of all ages and backgrounds are invited for an authentic European experience,” they add.

Festival highlights include live performances, traditional food, beer gardens, a children’s village/play area, and art and cultural exhibits.

The first Mississauga Polish Day was held in 2015, at the John Paul II Polish Cultural Centre, and the event moved to Celebration Square the following year.

It attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year.

Next up is the TD Mosaic Festival, which takes place July 22-23 at the square.

Organizers say this award-winning Mississauga festival “…brings you the best of art, culture and cuisine from South Asia. The two-day, free festival will feature music, dance, folklore, Bollywood, food and shopping in the heart of Mississauga headlined by popular artists and performers from India, Pakistan, Canada and the U.S.”

Also, children can enjoy free arts and craft workshops and learn to use a pottery wheel.

Additionally, “This year’s festival will present a film segment featuring South Asian cinema in a local theatre,” organizers note.

Rock the Coliseum, the independent music component of the Mosaic Festival, will celebrate its 15th year by presenting local youth bands as well as well-known independent bands from across the province.

Mississauga Italfest, taking place Aug. 12-13, returns to the square just in time to celebrate its 10th anniversary on the festival scene.

“Experience some of Italy’s finest in the heart of Mississauga” is among the themes of this year’s festival, also a free event to attend.

Attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year, Mississauga Italfest has consistently been named one of Ontario’s top 100 festivals/events over the years.

Celebrating “the beauty of Italian heritage and culture,” organizers say this event features delicious food and crafts from a variety of vendors and artisans, cultural and family-oriented activities, entertainment from local and international talent, a thriving “mercato” (market) and more.

On Aug. 20-21, Japan Festival Canada takes over Celebration Square as the largest Japanese cultural event in North America, according to organizers.

Some 90,000 people attended the 2019 event and organizers hope to exceed that number this year.

The festival’s goal, simply stated, is to “introduce and promote genuine Japanese food, culture and technologies,” organizers say, adding after two years of hosting the festival virtually, they’re looking forward to returning to an in-person, live event in the heart of the downtown core.

Japan Festival Canada, first held in 2016, also seeks to further improve Canadian-Japanese relations, organizers note.

To that end, they add, the festival will provide “…exciting entertainment such as traditional and modern performances, pop culture stage performances, as well as delicious Japanese foods and much more.”

For more information on these and other Mississauga events, visit the City of Mississauga website.
