Shoreline clean-up volunteer events planned for Thornbury

Shoreline clean-up volunteer events planned for Thornbury

There are clean-up days planned on three Mondays in July and August, anyone is welcome to volunteer.

Georgian Bay Forever is looking for volunteers to help with some upcoming shoreline clean-up events in Thornbury.

The Town of The Blue Mountains is supporting Georgian Bay Forever’s efforts to host the clean-up events at Little River Park in Thornbury.

The group hosted two shoreline clean-up events early this summer at the Thornbury Harbour that resulted in 28 pounds of garbage being collected. That included over 600 cigarette butts, 115 plastic fragments (many from zip ties) and over 56 pieces of fishing line.

Three additional dates have been scheduled in July and August and Georgian Bay Forever is looking for volunteers to help with the clean-up efforts.

The events will be held on Monday, July 25, Monday, August 8 and Monday, August 22 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“All materials will be provided for volunteers to safely complete a shoreline clean-up. The clean-ups happen rain or shine, unless of course there is severe weather,” said Ashley Morrison, project manager for Collingwood Divert and Capture: the fight to keep microplastics out of our water. “I will add that we are still looking for microfibre filter volunteers in Blue Mountain, Wasaga Beach and Collingwood to help divert microplastics away from our waterways.”

Anybody interested in volunteering can contact Georgian Bay Forever at plastics@gbf.org or visit the website.

Georgian Bay Forever is a charity dedicated to scientific research and public education on Georgian Bay’s aquatic ecosystem. Its mission is to protect, enhance, and restore the aquatic ecosystem of Georgian Bay by funding accredited research on water levels, water quality, and ecosystems; by educating the public and governments on issues regarding the environmental protection, conservation, the safety and preservation of the water and the natural features of the Georgian Bay area of Ontario; and by enhancing the public’s appreciation for their environment.

Rail trail cleanup to be part of local Earth Day events

Tire collection event planned in Elkins April 23

ELKINS — A spring cleanup Earth Day event is planned on the Allegheny Highlands Trail.

Hosted by the Highlands Trail Foundation, the Springtime Rail Trail Clean Up, set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, will “help make the trail more enjoyable for running, walking and biking this spring and summer,” officials said.

“The Allegheny Highlands Trail is a very popular trail in the area. Many people use it for walking, biking, and exercising,” Taira Gainer, the City of Elkins Mon Forest Town representative, said. “After the snow has melted, it’s important for us to have clean up events to pick up litter that has accumulated along the trail. It’s also the perfect opportunity to volunteer your time for a good purpose.”

Both groups and individuals are invited to participate in the cleanup event, and supplies, including bags, gloves and “pickers,” will be provided.

To sign up, please message the HTF at facebook.com/HighlandsTrailFoundation, or email HTF’s AmeriCorps member, Daniel Flood, at danielhflood@gmail.com.

To prevent duplication, volunteers will be assigned a section of trail, typically 1 to 2 miles long. Volunteers are welcome to take more than one section if they wish, but are encouraged to only work on their assigned section(s).

Supplies will be available at the Elkins Depot Welcome Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 28 and 29, and at 10 a.m. April 30. The Elkins Welcome Depot Center is located in downtown Elkins at 315 Railroad Avenue.

Tucker County volunteers can pick up supplies from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 28 and 29 at City Hall in Parsons, or at Mill Race Park on April 30 at 10 a.m. Parsons City Hall is located at 341 2nd Street.

Litter and smaller debris can be placed in the provided orange bags and left along the trail for pick up. Larger items such as tires can be placed alongside the bags. Much of the trash is located in the trail’s ditchline, which can be very mucky. Volunteers are encouraged to wear old clothes and shoes, or boots.

The Highlands Trail Foundation is grateful for the support of the West Virginia Division of Highways’ Adopt a Highway program.

A form will be provided with the supplies for volunteers to report the number of bags filled, hours worked and participants. The information will be compiled and reported to the Adopt A Highway Program.

Earth Day clean-up event planned for April 22 at High Falls Park Conservation Area in Casselman

Earth Day clean-up event planned for April 22 at High Falls Park Conservation Area in Casselman

In honour of Earth Day on April 22, volunteers from the Glengarry-Prescott-Russell riding’s Green Party of Canada (GPC) Electoral District Association (EDA) have organized a family-friendly park clean-up event in Casselman.

Members from all communities are invited to meet at High Falls Park Conservation Area on Friday, April 22, at 4 p.m.

Thaila Riden, the Green Party of Ontario candidate for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, will be joining the clean-up effort and performing a free acoustic show with his band 50 PROOF, at 1844 Bistro Eatery & Pub after the clean-up. The invitation to join volunteers at 1844 Bistro around 6 p.m. is open to all.

“This is a great opportunity to make community connections through respect and care for our parks and ecosystems, and it’s a perfect way to get to know one of the riding’s candidates before voting day,” says member of the GPC EDA and environmental activist Stephanie Marcil. “You don’t have to be a Green Party supporter to help take care of our community or get to know those dedicated to representing it.”

Garbage bags will be provided for volunteers but please bring your own reusable gloves!

Registration for the event is through Eventbrite.

24th annual Fryingpan Cleanup starts April 18

The Roaring Fork Conservancy will sponsor the 24th annual Fryingpan & Beyond River Cleanup on April 18-23.

Instead of one big cleanup day, this year’s event will follow the model the conservancy followed during the COVID-19 pandemic the past two years. Volunteers will be sought to pick up trash throughout next week in the entire Roaring Fork basin.

Pre-registration is required for anyone wanting to pick up trash on Frying Pan Road and along the Roaring Fork River through Basalt. Trash bags will be provided for those volunteers.

Pre-registration isn’t required to clean up other areas in the watershed. Volunteers in those areas must provide their own trash bags.

Participants are urged to take pictures of their most unusual or newsworthy finds and email photos to christina@roaringfork.org by noon April 26 to be entered into a prize drawing.

Additional details and registration is available at http://www.roaringfork.org/events.

“Pitch-In” community cleanup events scheduled throughout Leeds-Grenville

“Pitch-In” community cleanup events scheduled throughout Leeds-Grenville

With Earth Day coming up, multiple municipalities in our area are looking for volunteers to help clean up our communities.

North Grenville, Edwardsburgh-Cardinal, and Merrickville-Wolford have all declared next week “Pitch-In Week.”

The municipalities will be providing residents who sign up to help with garbage bags provided by Pitch-In Canada, a national environmental organization that’s been organizing cleanup campaigns like this since 1967.

Volunteers will go around the community picking up any waste they find, and dropping off their full bags at designated spots in their area.

North Grenville councillor Kristin Strackerjan says the recent warm weather in our region coincides well with the event.

“When the snow melts, it reveals items that have been discarded over the winter months,” she says. “Removing this waste quickly is only made possible by the many residents who volunteer their time to clean-up neighbourhoods throughout our incredible community.”

The Township of Augusta is also organizing a single-day “Pitch-In” cleanup event the morning of April 23rd. Anyone who signs up to help out there will be given lunch for free.

Pitch-In Week starts on April 17th in Merrickville-Wolford and North Grenville, and April 18th in Edwardsburgh-Cardinal.

If you’re interested in helping out, the municipalities’ websites have registration details.

Town of Milton to host community clean-up events this spring | inHalton

By Lucy Mazzucco

Published March 31, 2022 at 10:00 am

The Town of Milton recently announced that they will be hosting community clean-up events this spring.

In an effort to keep the community clean, residents are invited to participate in one of the Town’s annual neighbourhood clean-up days.

While no exact dates have been selected yet, the Town is reminding residents to do their part to keep the community clean in the meantime.

“We need all of our residents to help reduce the amount of litter in #MiltonON,” said the Town of Milton on Twitter.

The Town is reminding residents to dispose of garbage properly, secure waste on pick-up days and reduce, reuse and recycle.

Other actions residents can take to help reduce litter in Milton include using a litter bag in vehicles, using returnable or reusable drink containers and informing others about the negative aspects of littering.

The Town is also reminding residents not to put waste materials on Town or private property without the permission of the property owner as it is considered illegal dumping.
