Vancouver tattoo and cocktail enthusiasts need to check on this event at a local studio

Vancouver tattoo and cocktail enthusiasts need to check on this event at a local studio

Tattoos hold a certain fascination in popular culture. The art form has a rich history that has transitioned into something between a contemporary subculture and the mainstream.

Case in point: the molecular mixologists behind Cocktail Connoisseur have partnered with Le Papillon Tattoo Studio for an evening of cocktails and tattoos in the historic Millennium Building in Gastown.

Cocktail Connoisseur, which is run by Kam Tabarraee and Jean Laven, is a “ghost” bar known for its cool, somewhat-underground, events that combine elaborate beverages with creative pursuits like fashion, art, and cabaret.

The pair have previously partnered with fashion designer and NFT artist Kiarash Tarikhi, RnB singer Sofia Evangelina, and the Goh Ballet to create immersive experiences in the same building as Le Papillon and the two projects have been looking for an opportunity to collaborate.

This latest experience felt like the most natural progression for the two art forms. Tattoos and Cocktails will be hosted by tattoo artist and Le Papillon founder Daniel Snoeks, who says the studio is more like a lifestyle brand as it introduces the culture of tattooing to the world.

He honours the history of tattoos and his own personal story with the name. Le Papillon originated with the 1973 French film Papillon which inspired Snoeks‘ father to get butterfly tattoos, the only tattoos he had while Snoeks was growing up. He studied the history of butterfly tattoos and traced them back to the world of French prisons (in the film, Papillon was a French criminal, based on a true story). This lead Snoeks‘ to his interest in tattooing.

The event will feature four tattoo artists with different styles tattooing large-scale pieces live with clients they have worked with for a long a time, paired with four cocktails inspired by the story and design of the work.

Louis Tibo (@dirtyartmaker) is an old school mixed with new school artist whose an expert at packing in saturated colour and smooth black and grey, Shae Chari (@seekshaed) is an illustrative tattooer who likes to design psychedelic and magical nature inspired pieces, Marine (@moss.meadows) is a fine line black and grey artist who does a lot of florals and winged beasts, and Gale (@wraith________) specializes in highly-stylized dark and twisty vampiric illustrations.

To begin, guests will be greeted with a welcome drink and a brief documentary about Le Papillon by local filmmaker Warwick Hughes. Then each artist will have a station where they will be completing their live tattoo session and people can observe and mingle as DJEvo jams.

There are two sittings for this event at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and there will be an after party in the penthouse of the Millennium Building at 11 p.m. following the second sitting.

Decisions, decisions. Libations, libations.

Are you ready to grab a seat in some of Vancouver’s top restaurants to enjoy some incredible food paired with exciting spirits? That’s exactly what’s happening over several nights this March during Vancouver Cocktail Week.

The celebration of excellence in drinks kicks off Sunday, March 6, and an incredible roster of events, like tastings, a gala, and seminars follow, along with multiple dinners and excursions centred around cocktails and food. For example, you can sip and nibble among the fish and sea creatures at the Vancouver Aquarium on Mount Gay Rum, take a Prohibition-focused walking tour of Gastown, or sit down to elegant spirit-pairing dinners at some incredible Vancouver restaurants.

There are 19 events on the lineup, but I’ve pinpointed a few noteworthy standouts you won’t want to miss, all taking place March 6 through 9 in Vancouver.

Celebrate good times – and incredible drinks – at Vancouver Cocktail Week’s two signature events

Celebrate good times - and incredible drinks - at Vancouver Cocktail Week's two signature events

“No Fun City”? Nah, not anymore. It’s time to celebrate.

Spring is right around the corner, and with restrictions easing up in B.C. the mood is starting to feel downright celebratory. If you’re ready to get back in the groove of going out and raising a glass (or two), this year’s inaugural Vancouver Cocktail Week offers plenty of ways to celebrate the good times.

This first-ever week-long celebration of libations in Vancouver includes an array of tantalizing events, from seminars to up your sipping savvy to special pairing dinners, happy hours, and two signature gatherings that bookend the exciting festival.

Kicking VCW off on Sunday, March 6 is The Garden Club: A Botany of Brunch at the elegant Botanist Restaurant at the Fairmont Pacific Rim. Sit down to a five-course feast prepared by Botanist’s acclaimed Executive Chef Hector Laguna paired with cocktails made by some of Vancouver’s top bartenders.

But this is no ordinary brunch: The drink pros are being tasked with sourcing ingredients for their creations by foraging locally, which means Vancouver-grown components in every glass to really shake things up. For example, you will be enjoying a drink called “Down the Charente” by award-winning bartender Sabrine Dhaliwal (Chickadee Room), which features Hennessy VS Cognac, Cynar, Lillet, Tamarind, Coffee Bitters, and Crabapple Bitters paired with a course of housemade duck prosciutto tatin with charred sourdough and watercress – so this is not your usual eggs Benny and mimosa situation.

For those who prefer to “party like it’s 1999” and toast to fun times into the evening, VCW’s epic closing party, called the Fun City Gala might be more your speed.

Take the elevator up to one of the most storied—and newly renovated—party venues in Vancouver, The Roof at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, and prepare to forget anything you’ve heard about this being “No Fun City.”

The Fun City Gala is the marquee event of the week. It takes you on a glamorous journey through Vancouver’s tipsy traditions. Stations featuring local bar stars and global brand ambassadors will offer drinks representing different eras in Vancouver’s cocktail-culture past and present.

Plus there will be food stations and passed canapés, as well as a VIP hour, live entertainment, live music, DJ and a silent auction with proceeds going to the BC Hospitality Foundation and its scholarship program. PS: If you want to make a night of it, the hotel is offering special room rates for the evening.
