LONDON — Queen Elizabeth II travelled to her official residence in Scotland on Monday to open a week of traditional events, starting with an ancient ceremony at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

The 96-year-old monarch, who has cut back on public appearances in recent months because of ongoing problems in moving around, took part in the “Ceremony of the Keys” in Edinburgh.

She was symbolically offered the keys to the city and welcomed to her “ancient and hereditary kingdom of Scotland.” Tradition dictates that she returns them, entrusting their safekeeping to the city’s elected officials.

A smiling Elizabeth stood in the forecourt at the palace, with a member of her entourage holding an umbrella over her head.

The monarch was joined by her youngest son, Prince Edward, and his wife Sophie.

The queen is expected to attend a military ceremony in the palace gardens on Tuesday. The military parade will pay tribute to her role as head of the U.K. armed forces.

The visit comes three weeks after the Platinum Jubilee, which marked the monarch’s 70 years on the throne. She only made a few appearances during the four-day holiday weekend, with officials saying she experienced some “discomfort” during those events.

Prince Charles, her son and heir to the throne, has been taking on a greater public role in recent months. He was also taking part in the events in Scotland along with other members of the Royal Family.

St. Elizabeth to observe National Cancer Survivors Day Monday, host events throughout June

St. Elizabeth to observe National Cancer Survivors Day Monday, host events throughout June

Cancer in Northern Kentucky and the Greater Cincinnati area affects thousands each year, with an estimated 30,000 Kentuckians, 73,000 Ohioans, and 39,000 Hoosiers facing a cancer diagnosis in 2022 — numbers far above the national average. While the numbers are staggering, thanks to education, awareness, medical advances, and an emphasis on prevention and screening, more and more people are surviving every day.

On Monday, June 6, St. Elizabeth Healthcare will observe National Cancer Survivors Day (June 5) by honoring cancer survivors and their supporters. The annual event of solidarity with cancer survivors around the world raises awareness of the ongoing challenges they face and – most importantly – celebrates their lives.

St. Elizabeth Healthcare will host events all month honoring the courage, strength, and resiliency of those affected by cancer, including:

• Weekly classes on aromatherapy, yoga, healthy cooking, and art therapy.

• Giveaways on June 6 for survivors — including ribbon pins, buttons, flower seeds, bracelets, and cookies. In addition, a beautiful quilt has been donated and entries will be received throughout the day for one survivor.

• Festive banners and ribbons displayed throughout the St. Elizabeth Cancer Center.

Thanks to major advances in cancer prevention, early detection, and targeted treatments, many patients are living longer with cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, there are more than 43 million cancer survivors worldwide. “Everyone knows someone whose life has been touched by cancer,” says Dwinelva Z. Zackery, Director of Integrative Oncology for St. Elizabeth Healthcare.

Cancer survivors face many ongoing challenges. “Each day, our oncology teams work to improve cancer care, help reduce the incidence of cancer and guide patients through survivorship,” says Zackery. “We’re right here to help as survivors navigate their journey.”

St. Elizabeth offers survivorship planning to all patients facing a cancer diagnosis. Visit stelizabeth.com/mycancer to learn more.

Platinum Jubilee: Queen Elizabeth to miss Saturday events

Platinum Jubilee: Queen Elizabeth to miss Saturday events

Queen Elizabeth II opted not to attend the Epsom Derby Saturday as part of her Platinum Jubilee celebration, the second time in as many days that her mobility issues have robbed crowds of a chance to see her.

The 96-year-old monarch also isn’t expected to attend the evening Platinum Jubilee concert outside Buckingham Palace, where Sirs Elton John and Rod Stewart, Alicia Keys and Queen + Adam Lambert will perform. Prince Charles and Prince William, the queen’s son and grandson, are scheduled to address the crowd of 22,000 people.

The queen has had problems moving around lately, which the palace describes as “episodic mobility issues,” limiting her public appearances in recent months.

On Saturday, the queen was represented at the prestigious Epsom Derby race by her daughter, Princess Anne, who appeared in the royal box to crowds cheering and waving Union flags.

On Friday, the queen skipped a special service of Thanksgiving in her honor at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Palace officials said she had experienced “some discomfort” at events the day before.

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, were among nearly 50 members of the royal family who gathered to honor the absent head of state. It was the couple’s first public appearance in the U.K. since they stepped back from royal duties and moved to California two years ago.

In another sign of thawing relations, royal accounts on Twitter wished Harry and Meghan’s daughter Lilibet, a happy first birthday. Lilibet turned one on Saturday. She and her older brother, Archie, haven’t yet made an appearance during this trip.

“Wishing Lilibet a very Happy 1st Birthday!” the Royal Family account tweeted.

Sunday marks the culmination of Platinum Jubilee celebrations with the Platinum Jubilee Pageant. As part of the jubilee pageant, dancers from London’s African-Caribbean community will don costumes of giant flamingos, zebras and giraffes to re-imagine the moment in 1952 when Princess Elizabeth learned she had become queen while visiting a game park in Kenya.

Another group will recall the queen’s 1947 marriage to Prince Philip and celebrate weddings around the Commonwealth with Bollywood-style dancing.

The acts also include a 20-foot-tall puppet of a young woman, surrounded by a pack of mischievous corgi puppets.

Queen Elizabeth cancels virtual events for the second time since testing positive.

Queen Elizabeth cancels virtual events for the second time since testing positive.

Queen Elizabeth II postponed her daily virtual engagements on Thursday, Buckingham Palace said, the second time she has taken such a step since she tested positive for the coronavirus on Sunday.

The palace did not specify why the meetings were called off, so it was unclear whether her absence reflected lingering Covid symptoms. On Tuesday, the palace said she had canceled virtual events because she was “still experiencing mild coldlike symptoms.”

The palace said the 95-year-old queen would be “continuing with light duties,” and that she had no other engagements scheduled this week. It did not say when Thursday’s virtual engagements would be rescheduled.

But the queen did have her regularly scheduled call with Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday, the palace said. Between her coronavirus recovery and the crisis unfolding in Ukraine there had been some doubt about whether their phone meeting would go ahead.

The news of her illness came as Mr. Johnson made moves to lift England’s remaining coronavirus restrictions this week.

Elizabeth received her first shot of coronavirus vaccine in January 2021 at Windsor Castle with her late husband, Prince Philip. The palace has not publicly confirmed any additional vaccine doses.

Several people at Windsor Castle, where the queen has spent most of her time in virtual quarantine during the pandemic, were infected this week, a palace official said. It is not known who exposed her to the virus.

The queen tested positive on Sunday, after meeting with her son and heir Prince Charles earlier this month, who subsequently went into isolation after himself testing positive for the coronavirus for a second time. Charles is fully vaccinated and boosted.
