This Magical Event Is Coming To Alberta & You Can Walk Through Thousands Of Glowing Pumpkins
The spirit of fall reawakens! A magical Halloween event is heading to two Alberta cities next month and you’ll be able to wander through trails of thousands of carved, glowing pumpkins.
Pumpkins After Dark is bringing brand-new displays of pumpkins to Winsport (Calgary) and Borden Park (Edmonton), from late September through to Halloween (full details below). These are jack-o-lanterns like you’ve never seen them before!
As part of the event, over 6,000 hand-carved pumpkins will be used to create stunning sculptures, with music and special effects to bring them to life.
Not only will there be some of the spookiest Halloween characters, but impressive displays of carvings like dinosaurs and dragons and pop culture icons will also stand tall.
If you want to learn more about the incredible process of carving, there will also be live demonstrations happening throughout the event. So you’ll be able to take home some tips to give your own jack-o-lanterns a spooky twist.
There will be a ton of pumpkin photo ops as well as a popular fall treats and sweets up for grabs.
Tickets need to be bought online as none will be available on-site.

BCHL 60th Anniversary event date announced – My East Kootenay Now
After getting rescheduled last season, the BCHL 60th Anniversary event will be played from Jan. 20-22.
The event will be held in Penticton and feature a top prospects game, BCHL alumni game, skills competition and 3-on-3 all-star game.
“We were disappointed to have to cancel our event last year, but we could not be happier to give our fans another opportunity to take part in the festivities this year,” said BCHL Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Steven Cocker in a release.
“It may technically be our 61st season now, but we will celebrate just the same as we would have last year while recognizing the rich history of the BC Hockey League.”
“One of the goals for the future of our league events is to make sure BCHL athletes receive even more exposure to NHL scouts and college coaches. With the debut of our Top Prospects event, we are thrilled to add another stage for our players to showcase themselves in a new environment.”
Rosters, ticketing and special guests will be announced at a later date.
Joaquin Niemann going to Boston for next LIV Golf event
Joaquin Niemann of Chile was headed to Boston on Monday for the next LIV Golf event, which would give the Saudi-funded league its youngest PGA Tour winner as it fills out its roster for the rest of the inaugural season.
“Going but has not signed it yet,” Carlos Rodriguez, his manager at GSE Worldwide, said in a text to The Associated Press.
The 23-year-old Niemann, who is No. 19 in the world ranking, was the most prominent name mentioned in various reports over the weekend to leave the PGA Tour. The most notable was British Open champion Cameron Smith, which The Daily Telegraph reported three weeks ago.
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy led a private meeting among top players on Aug. 17 during the BMW Championship in which they discussed a new tournament model for the PGA Tour. Niemann took part in that meeting, and he would be the only one of the 23 players in attendance to defect.
The move would not be a surprise, mostly because Niemann’s closest friends in golf already have joined LIV Golf. Sergio Garcia is a mentor. Carlos Ortiz of Mexico is his best friend in golf and they often stay in the same house and bring their own chef.
Niemann had been contemplating an offer since the start of the year. But early plans for the rival league were stalled in February with Phil Mickelson’s derogatory comments about the Saudis and the PGA Tour, even saying his end game was to get leverage for change.
And then the Chilean won the Genesis Invitational at Riviera — Woods presented him the trophy — and Niemann said, “Winning a PGA Tour event, getting a trophy, having Tiger there, all the history behind it, there’s nothing that can compete with this.”
But this decision largely was about his life on the road with his friends.
Rodriguez had told the AP on Sunday at East Lake that Niemann listened in the player meeting and then considered the changes coming on the PGA Tour starting next year, such as a model that would bring together the best in golf up to 17 times a year to compete for $20 million purses.
He said Niemann would talk it over with his father on Sunday night and then decide. The Telegraph reported that his signing bonus would be the $100 million range. Most of the LIV contracts are said to be over three or four years.
Also leaving for LIV are Harold Varner, Cameron Tringale, Marc Leishman and Anirban Lahiri.
Niemann would add to the growing list of players who have given up on the Presidents Cup on Sept. 22-25 at Quail Hollow. Abraham Ancer and Louis Oosthuizen already have played LIV golf events. Niemann and Smith were among the eight qualifiers.
Leishman and Lahiri have previously played for the International team, though neither had qualified this year because of their play.
International Captain Trevor Immelman is to announce his four wild-card picks on Sept. 6.

Torch of Dignity relay event sheds light on continued importance of human rights, education in Manitoba | CBC News
Winnipeggers passed a torch around Central Park for an annual event this weekend, casting a spotlight on the continued importance of human rights.
Manitobans for Human Rights, an organization created eight years ago with the goal of educating Manitobans about the importance of human rights, held their seventh annual Torch of Dignity relay on Sunday.
The event featured human rights speakers and live entertainment as well as artisan, career and resource booths.
Zara Kadhim, the logistics coordinator for the organization, said although the event was downsized this year, the hope was to bring the community together.
“Education is the first step,” she told Radio-Canada in an interview, adding that the province still has a long way to go.
Friendly Manitoba is doing a lot better than many places in the world when it comes to human rights, Kadhim said, but issues like homelessness, MMIWG2S and immigrant and refugee struggles are becoming more normalized in the province.
“We’re almost desensitized to human rights violations,” she said.
The aim of the relay was to bring awareness to those issues and focus on peoples’ similarities instead of their differences, said Kadhim.
The peer support organization Anxiety Disorders Association of Manitoba, where all staff have lived experience with anxiety, had their own resource booth at the event.
“Mental health is a human right,” said Vienna Code, the public education and communications coordinator for ADAM. “We need to promote it a bit more and understand that all humans deserve the right to mental health services.”
With the pandemic seemingly winding down, Code said more people are having difficulties with addressing their nerves.
“People think they shouldn’t be anxious anymore or have those thoughts,” she said.
Anxiety and mental health concerns are common, she said, and ADAM acts as a stepping stone for people to see what next steps they have to take to address their mental health issues.
Code said it’s important for younger people to have earlier interventions when it comes to mental health issues.
“I think there still continues to be a stigma around mental health and I think that’s the hardest hurdle for people, to step and reach out for help.”
Sarah Parker, executive assistant of the Islamic Social Services Association, said the association took part in the event to encourage people to be open to learning about Islam and Muslims.
“In a way, if they know about Islam and Muslims, then we can fight the stereotypes,” she said.
“We believe that at the heart of human rights is human dignity.”
Inaugural Bike the Night event coming to Barrie next month
Guided cycling tour Sept. 17 will follow festival featuring food, music, bike tune-ups

Barrie residents and visitors are invited to the active transportation and sustainability committee’s first-ever Bike the Night event, modelled after other similar events worldwide, on Sept. 17.
This event is a free, community-guided bicycle ride.
Date: Saturday, Sept. 17
Time: 5 to 8 p.m.
Location: Meridian Place, 30 Simcoe St., Barrie
A 30-minute bike ride is scheduled to begin at dusk (around 7 p.m.). Participants are invited to dress up in costume, decorate their bikes with lights, and cycle leisurely through the streets of downtown Barrie and along the lakeshore path as part of a guided ride.
The event will include a pre-ride festival with music, food trucks, free bike tune-ups, games, giveaways, prizes, and Barrie Transit bike rack demonstrations.
This event is being planned and led by the active transportation and sustainability committee and Living Green Barrie, with support from the City of Barrie, Downtown Barrie BIA, Cycle Barrie, Barrie Transit, Barrie Public Library, Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, Tourism Barrie, and Firebird Community Cycle.

A day at the Diamond Aces Remote Control Fun Fly event in photos
Remote control airplanes were soaring through the sky yesterday at the Steinbach Fun Fly event.
There were plenty of passionate airplane enthusiasts at the event, including Andrew Rodriguez who has a collection of over 40 planes. Then there was Scott Haslem who built some fairly large planes, and his significant other Diana who crocheted pilots for the planes he built.
Another fun fact: some of the planes at the event could fly at over 150mph!

Final Fantasy 14: The Rising 2022 Anniversary Event Hints About Future Events
Final Fantasy 14’s fourth wall-breaking anniversary event gives players a subtle hint as to what is in store for them after Endwalker.
With the summer coming to a close, the time has come for Final Fantasy 14 to begin The Rising event–a holiday celebrating the MMO’s anniversary. The Final Fantasy 14 event’s history of breaking the fourth wall to tease the game’s future continues this year, with a cryptic hint of great change on the horizon after Endwalker.
In universe, The Rising is a holiday which celebrates the anniversary of the Seventh Umbral Calamity–the event which heralded the end of the original Final Fantasy 14 via the release of Bahamut from the lesser moon, Dalamud. Outside the game, it coincides with the launch of Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn a few years after the original servers shut down.
Every year, The Rising event in Final Fantasy 14 allows developers to speak directly to players and give hints about the future of the game. This year is no different; players are once again transported to a mystic, liminal space by the Wandering Minstrel–a mysterious, ever-present bard who looks suspiciously like director and producer Naoki Yoshida. While there, Yoshida himself thanks players for being a part of the community, and claims “another great change” is coming soon, and that it will “open the way to exciting new journeys.”
Players are already speculating as to what this could mean. In Final Fantasy 14’s current patch story, it is plumbing the depths of the Void in search of a missing dragon, but story hints suggest there may be a way to restore the damned world to its original state. Other players wonder if the events of Endwalker might trigger another Calamity or other terrible event, which may coincide with a world revamp similar to what World of Warcraft did in Cataclysm.
Others speculate that Yoshida’s cryptic hint could be referring to a change outside the game. In February, Final Fantasy 14 announced an upcoming graphics overhaul which would begin with the critically-acclaimed MMORPG’s unannounced sixth expansion pack. Such a drastic overhaul could qualify as a “great change,” and the improved graphical fidelity could lead to “exciting new journeys” as well.
Players who want to experience The Rising event for themselves can accept the quest “Newfound Journey” from the Wandering Minstrel in Ul’dah once they reach level 15 . This limited-time quest takes only a few minutes to complete, and will be available until early morning on September 12. Players who complete it will also acquire the new Solus zos Galvus minion in Final Fantasy 14, and the chance to see Yoshida’s cryptic hints for themselves. Whatever Final Fantasy 14 has in store for its fans promises to be exciting, one way or another.
