Chester Fields 2022 Exhibition – GlobalNews Events

Chester Fields 2022 Exhibition - GlobalNews Events

Chester Fields is an initiative of The Polygon Gallery that encourages the development of visionary young photographers, giving them an opportunity to show their work on a professional platform. Teen artists from across the region are invited to submit original works of photographic art in response to a theme. All submittals are reviewed by a jury of artists and arts professionals, who select works to be shown in both virtual and onsite exhibitions. Our Spring exhibition at The Polygon Gallery was Cloud Album, which celebrated the contributions of photography to the development of modern meteorology. From the medium’s beginnings in the 1800s through to the mid- twentieth century, advancements in camera technology allowed researchers to document clouds more accurately, and to catalogue their forms, leading in turn to more accurate predictions of weather. These researchers depended on hundreds of photographers – many of whom were hobbyists or amateurs – to continually point their cameras skyward, capturing thousands of images that tracked subtle changes in atmospheric activity. This commitment to returning to a subject repeatedly inspired the 2022 Chester Fields theme, Look Again. Photography is so often an instantaneous process; what new possibilities can be discovered when we draw that process out? Rather than capturing an image instantly, photographers were challenged to choose a subject that they would revisit, again and again, over a period of time. Artists interpreted this theme, and took up this challenge, with incredible ingenuity. At a time when our attention is often scattered and diverted, themes of slowing down, looking closely, and contemplating carefully continued to arise among the rich variety of images submitted.

Aunties Holding It Together exhibition at the Burrard Arts Foundation – GlobalNews Events

Aunties Holding It Together exhibition at the Burrard Arts Foundation - GlobalNews Events

BAF presents “Aunties Holding It Together,” by Michelle Sound, featuring new sculptural and photographic works from two ongoing series. The exhibition explores personal and familial narratives through a deep consideration of Indigenous artistic processes. Sound’s works contemplate cultural identities and histories, engaging traditional materials and concepts within a contemporary context. She stitches and adorns torn images, ripped to show the colonial violence that her family, and other Indigenous families, have experienced—residential school intergenerational trauma, loss of language, and displacement from traditional territories. Although these losses can never be fully healed, through practices such as drum making, caribou hair tufting, beadwork, embroidery and photography, Sound’s works highlight acts of care and joy rooted within family and community. A text by Billy-Ray Belcourt will be published to accompany the exhibition. When: • Exhibition: August 18th – October 22nd, 2022; • Opening reception: August 18th (6:00pm – 9:00pm PDT); • Gallery open Tuesday – Saturday 12:00pm-5:00pm About the Burrard Arts Foundation (BAF) Burrard Arts Foundation (BAF) is a registered Canadian charity driven by a deep belief that arts and culture have the power to measurably contribute to better cities and healthier communities. BAF envisions a future where cities develop, evolve, and thrive with arts and culture at their core.  Cities where creative practices bridge cultural divides, promote social cohesion and inspire people to open their minds to new perspectives. With this philosophy in mind, BAF produces programming that supports emerging artists and special projects that foster creativity in the public realm, with a mission to amplify creative culture in pursuit of collective inspiration.   The Burrard Arts Foundation’s programming is made possible by the generous support of the Chan Family Foundation and the City of Vancouver Cultural Grants Program.

Niagara Regional Exhibition not ‘picking sides’ by hosting Freedom Tour event

The Niagara Regional Exhibition grounds will be site of a two-day rFeedom Tour event this weekend.

Niagara Regional Exhibition isn’t taking a political stance by allowing a two-day Freedom Tour event to set up at its Welland fairgrounds site this weekend.

That’s according to Mike Gill, president of Niagara Regional Agricultural Society, the organization that operates the site on Niagara Street.

“No one formally opposed it,” he said about event needing approval from the society board.

The event, a “Unity Truck Show,” will run Friday night and Saturday, featuring a number of guest speakers who will discuss “issues they believe in,” said Gill.

“We’re not about to get political in any way. That’s not our place,” said Gill, adding the society is not “picking sides” in the COVID-19 debate.

Events have mostly been non-existent at the fairgrounds since the pandemic started and the society needs the money the event will generate.

“We’re just looking for some rental income,” said Gill.

In 2020, there were “no rentals at all,” which equated to a loss of about $24,000.

In a normal year, the society’s annual budget is about $100,000, with three quarters of that amount coming from one building being rented full time, as well as storage fees for people who keep things such as boats and cars there during the winter.

In 2021, there were four or five events that brought in no more than $9,000 in rental fees, said Gill.

On top of the annual exhibition on the first weekend of June, several other events are on the roster for a full schedule this year, he said.

Asked if the society’s board is concerned about backlash from people who disagree with the messages expected to be shared on the weekend, Gill didn’t seem worried.

“It doesn’t matter what we do. Someone is always unhappy. That’s just the world we live in,” he said.

According to promotional material on social media, the event will include bouncy castles, face-painting and games, part of a “kids fest.”

According to the Freedom Tour website, a “group of like-minded individuals dedicated to spreading the truth of what is happening in our country” will be attending.

A section of the website says the group is “still carrying on about freedom,” due to rules regarding unvaccinated Canadians crossing borders.

People losing jobs due to vaccine mandates is another concern the group shares on its website.
