Center For Sexual & Gender Diversity To Host Events Throughout Fall Semester

Center For Sexual & Gender Diversity To Host Events Throughout Fall Semester

Penn State’s Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity (CSGD) will host a variety of events this fall, with topics including pronouns, sexuality, and empowerment.

The first event is “Game Time” beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6, in the HUB. That’ll be one of two events to take place in September.

The two events in September will be followed up with four in October, which is LGBTQ+ History Month, and three in November, which is Transgender Awareness Month.

The CSGD strives to create an inclusive environment where students, faculty, staff, and alumni can all feel supported. Within the CSGD, Penn Staters everywhere are able to access support, connect with others, and expand their knowledge on gender and sexual diversity.

Additionally, the CSGD has resources that span many different communities, including those who identify as queer and transgender and those who belong to the Commonwealth Campuses.

In honor of LGBTQ+ History Month in October and Transgender Awareness Month in November, the CSGD will host various speakers so students can learn more from members of their respective communities.

For more information, reach out to the Penn State Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity through Instagram or email.

Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance looks forward to fall events after successful summer

Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance looks forward to fall events after successful summer

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Summer 2022 comes to its unofficial end this weekend and for downtown Harrisonburg, it was a busy season with many events making their first comeback in years.

“It’s felt really good to bring the community back together and to celebrate being in Harrisonburg and to provide something fun for our communities and tourists to do while they’re here,” Andrea Dono, the Executive Director of the Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance, said.

Thousands of people flocked to the Turner Pavilion for the Rocktown Beer and Music Festival in April and the sold-out Downtown Dinner Party brought people together in May. Both events came back from a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Best.Weekend.Ever. featured live music, a sip and stroll, and food trucks in June. Block Party in the ‘Burg welcomed James Madison University students back to the Friendly City at the end of August. Both events were able to happen last summer.

“They come back because they love Harrisonburg and they just need an excuse to come here, so it’s really important for people to maintain their connections with our community,” Dono said. “I think people are just hungry for togetherness and for activities to get back into things.”

Events were reformatted so they are all not at the Turner Pavilion or Court Square, but all around the 40-blocks making up downtown Harrisonburg.

This fall there are still plenty of events and festivals to look forward to:

Harrisonburg International Festival: Saturday, Sept. 22, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Shenandoah Valley Pride: Saturday, Oct. 8 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Skeleton Festival: Saturday, Oct. 15, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Harrisonburg Half Marathon: Oct. 15 at 7 a.m.

“It’s just going to be a phenomenal time in downtown Harrisonburg starting this month,” Dono said.

While big events happen several times a season in downtown Harrisonburg, Dono encourages people to check out events that small businesses host frequently and check out First Fridays every month.

Fall 2022 Events You Can’t Miss!

Fall 2022 Events You Can't Miss!

We know it’s a busy time for Matadors — finding your way to classes, adjusting your schedules, all the things that take place at the start of the new school year. But don’t forget to have some fun!

There are lots of events happening in the coming weeks to introduce students to life on campus. It’s a great way to meet people and learn more about the CSUN community.

Associated Students sponsors many of these events. The AS Programs Manager, James Forrester, says the purpose is to help foster social connections on campus.

“The events that get put on for the campus community provide those opportunities outside of the classrooms for people to connect, build relationships, and ultimately find themselves,” Forrester said. “Experiences bond people together and we can’t wait to provide those experiences for everyone this year!”

So, let the bonding begin!  Here’s a rundown of some can’t miss events to start your semester off right.

Placing a Rose on the Matador statue (Matador Plaza)

At the beginning and end of each semester, CSUN students place a red rose at the foot of the Matador statue in the Matador Square. For years, placing the rose has symbolized bringing good fortune to the student for midterms or final exams. People also place roses on the statue for graduation and other big life events.

Sports-a-Palooza (Aug. 31) Sierra Lawn

Held annually by Associated Students, Sports-A-Palooza is where students can interact with the different sports clubs at CSUN. Music and games are offered at Sports-A-Palooza and students are also given the chance to join the sports clubs.

Matafest (Sept. 1) Plaza Del Sol & Grand Salon

Learn about all the different resources that the University Student Union offers to CSUN students, while enjoying food, games and music. The event will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the USU’s Plaza Del Sol.

President’s Picnic (Sept. 6) Bayramian Lawn

Join CSUN president Erika D. Beck for food, drinks and fun activities. The picnic is expected to have two time slots for the event so all can participate, one held in the morning and one later on in the day.

Cultural Center Welcome Events (Sept. 6-9) University Student Union, Thousand Oaks Room

These are great events for CSUN students who want to create bonds with others in similar communities on campus. Held as four individual celebrations, students are encouraged to come and forge connections with others. The Latinx Welcome event will be held on Sept. 6, followed by the Asian American Pacific Islander Welcome event and American Indian Welcome event, respectively, on Sept. 7 & 8. All will be held in the USU, Thousand Oaks Room on the second floor.

Meet the Clubs (Sept. 13-14) Sierra Quad

Interact and get to know the clubs and organizations around campus at Meet the Clubs. Whether you are a freshmen trying to decide what extracurricular activities  to do, or a returning CSUN student that wants to get more involved, Meet the Clubs is an easy way to see where you fit in.

Camp Camp Welcoming Event (Sept. 14) Northridge Center

The Camp Camp Event, hosted by the Pride Center, will offer students the opportunity to meet other people and join in on fun activities and games. Held on Sept. 14 at 4 p.m., CSUN students can also create bedazzled accessories and learn how to strut down a runway.

New Student Convocation (Sept. 22) University Library Lawn

The Freshman Convocation serves as an extended welcome to new CSUN students, by the administration, campus and the President. Since 2007, the Freshman Convocation has celebrated CSUN students with music and a speech from a noteworthy speaker. The keynote speaker has yet to be announced.

Welcoming Social  (Sept. 30) USU Grand Salon

Join other returning and new CSUN students at the DREAM Center for a day to make connections and explore your creativity. This community-building event will allow students the opportunity to paint, make jewelry, play games and so much more!

Matador Nights (Sept. 23) University Student Union

Hosted by University Student Union, Matador Nights is a celebration for students with a DJs, along with free food and carnival rides or games, all in the USU. The event is for CSUN students only, and students will be able to purchase their tickets at the A.S. ticket office in upcoming weeks. Be on the lookout for the date and location for this year’s Matador Nights.

WDM preparing for a busy fall season with several events

The Western Development Museum’s Virtual Coffee Club returns with another great lineup of educational topics, while a volunteer blitz occurs in early September.

The Western Development Museum is gearing up for a busy fall season, from the return of its Virtual Coffee Club gatherings to a volunteer blitz in early September.

Celebrating seniors

The organization is celebrating seniors all September by holding numerous activities to honour older adults in the community. Museum attendees can pick up an activity booklet, participate in a time-hopping scavenger hunt and watch films from the National Film Board (NFB) about seniors and intergenerational learning.

Films from the NFB will be screened on a repeating loop throughout the month in the 100 Years of Saskatchewan History Theatre. Some films include “Granny and Mia,” “With Grandma,” “Ludovic – Visiting Grandpa,” and several Aboriginal-themed films.

Cabinet of curiosities

Meanwhile, the WDM will host a Cabinet of Curiosities workshop on Sunday, Sept. 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees can learn about the oddities in cabinets and how they spark wonder about the world while making connections to modern-day museums.

Participants will hear about the importance of everyday objects and their connection to human knowledge and history. They will also learn about what’s involved in artifact collecting, why the WDM collects and how it categorizes, rearranges and classifies objects within the museum.

Attendees can also study their own “artifacts” and learn how to create a portable museum.

Volunteer recruitment

The WDM is hosting a Volunteer Blitz recruitment day on Saturday, Sept. 17, starting at 2 p.m. Residents are encouraged to become volunteers and share their knowledge and experience in roles such as artifact preservation/restoration, special events and heritage demonstrations, gallery ambassadors, the Steam program and office assistant.

Benefits of volunteering at the WDM include meeting new people, learning and developing skills, helping keep history alive, receiving free admission to all WDM locations — with volunteer ID, and receiving discounts on full-priced items at WDM gift shops and the Saskatoon Boomtown Café.

Anyone interested should contact Karla Rasmussen, education/public programs co-ordinator, at 306-693-5989 or email krasmussen@wdm.ca.

Refreshments will be provided after the meeting.

This year’s incoming fall freshman class is already making its mark for academic excellence. Preliminary statistics indicate the fall freshman class set a new record for the highest SAT scores in university history with an average score of 1335. UCF offers more than 230 degree programs overall.

Students will have countless opportunities to unleash their potential, including working with talented faculty members to expand their knowledge in the classroom and research labs and participating in new experiences like internships and service opportunities that will empower them to succeed at UCF and beyond.

UCF’s many student resources include the Student Academic Resource Center, which provides one-on-one and group peer tutoring, academic coaching and workshops; the Transfer Center, which pairs transfer students with a personal success coach and helps them navigate their UCF experience and develop a sense of belonging; and UCF Cares, an umbrella of services focused on student wellbeing.
