Organizers cancel fireworks shows, festivals, sports events over drought, heat

Events around the Netherlands are being cancelled or modified due to the ongoing drought and the recent high temperatures. An official national heat wave is expected to be declared this weekend, which happens after five consecutive days of temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius measured in De Bilt, Utrecht.

The thermometer should read 30 degrees in far Noord-Holland, 31 degrees in Friesland and Groningen, 32 degrees in Utrecht and the eastern region, and 33 degrees in the south. Despite overnight temperatures falling as low as 17 degrees, it should rise back above 30 degrees across the country on Sunday.

A fireworks show that was to be held on Saturday evening in Leersum, Utrecht was canceled because of the fire hazard. “Unfortunately, by order of the Utrecht Security Region, the fireworks cannot continue. It is not safe due to the drought,” the organizers said.

The fireworks show is part of the annual Bloemencorso Leersum, which has been held since 1952. The fireworks were to be staged from a park in Leersum. Due to the fire hazard caused by the fireworks, the municipality just mowed the entire park.

“Unfortunately, mowing the flowery field was not necessary,” said the municipality of Heuvelrug, which also includes Leersum, in a message posted on Twitter on Friday.

The Halve Marathon Vlieland, which was to be held on Sunday, has also been cancelled. The organization made the decision in consultation with the Friesland Security Region and the municipality of Vlieland. It would have been the first time the half marathon was organized since before the coronavirus pandemic, but the organization said it would have been irresponsible to put the runners and volunteers on the course given the heat. “The persistent heat in combination with an easterly wind will cause temperatures to become too high, especially on the shell paths in the dunes area,” the Halve Marathon Vlieland website said.

The Harvest Festival in Oldebroek, Gelderland, was also cancelled on Saturday. The party includes inspections of cows, horses and sheep, but the associations that are involved have withdrawn due to the heat. Practitioners of old crafts also cancelled.

The Bemmelse Paarden Dagen, a horse event in Bemmel, Gelderland, will continue on Monday and Tuesday, at least for the time being. The pony market on Monday has been shortened. At that market, which has taken place since 1958, animals are sold with a traditional handshake between traders and buyers.

The 255th shooting competition organized by the Roman Catholic shooting association of southern Limburg (RKZLSB) was to take place in Mechelen, in Limburg. That event was also postponed due to the heat. It will instead take place next Sunday. “After all, the personal health of all participants and all visitors should have priority and is the reason for this decision,” said the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem.

A horse-riding competition set for Saturday and Sunday was canceled in Ysselsteyn in northern Limburg, and the BraDeLierloop running competition planned for Saturday in De Lier, Zuid-Holland, was also canceled.

Celebrate independence

Monday is the Fourth of July, Independence Day, and there are celebrations all over the place. Salt Lake City government isn’t doing fireworks, but both The Gateway and the Salt Lake Bees will have professional fireworks. Elsewhere around the state, look for professional fireworks displays in Brigham City, Cedar City, Clearfield, Delta, Duchesne, Hurricane, Kanab, Kaysville, Layton, Lehi (Thanksgiving Point), Magna, Murray, North Ogden, Oakley, Parowan, Richfield, Riverton, Sandy, St. George, Tooele, West Bountiful and West Jordan. Most start at dusk, around 10 p.m. Officials around the state are asking everyone — because of drought, wildfires and air quality — to ditch the amateur fireworks.

Spektor in Sandy, twice

Esquire magazine calls Regina Spektor “our generation’s Joni Mitchell.” The Moscow-born and Bronx-raised singer/songwriter/pianist has been performing for 20 years now, starting in the anti-folk scene in New York’s East Village. A look at July 4th events in the Chippewa Valley

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – This holiday weekend, communities throughout the Chippewa Valley are hosting events celebrating America’s birthday.

Altoona is hosting fireworks Saturday night at Cinder City Park. The show starts around 10 p.m. Before the fireworks, the city is hosting it’s annual Independence Day celebration at the park.

“We have a lot of activities for the whole family. We have a 5K race and kids races, which are shorter distances. We have a kids zone, which is bouncy house, $5 per kid. We have a cribbage tournament that you can sign up for. We have food trucks, vending and, of course, we have the Big Deeks playing,” Altoona City Administrator Mike Golat said.

The event begins at 5 p.m. Admission to the park is free.

“Come on down, get your spot and get ready for the fireworks,” Golat said. “Enjoy some music, enjoy some good food, activities for the kids and adults and have fun.”

In Eau Claire, fireworks return to their traditional spot Monday night at Carson Park.

Eau Claire Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Manager Steve Plaza said they’re back in the park in conjunction with the city’s 150th anniversary celebration.

“You can watch them from the grandstands on the baseball field, you also can watch them from the bleacher areas in the football fields, some open grass areas in the park itself,” he said. “I know a lot of people go down to Phoenix to watch them and also Half Moon Beach is a popular spot.”

The fireworks begin around 10 p.m.

Plaza said if they’re canceled due to weather the city will hold the show Tuesday night.

The Eau Claire Express also play Monday afternoon. The team is letting people on the field after the game to watch the fireworks.

The city will be making the roads around Carson Park one way Monday night. People can enter the park from Lake Street and exit from Menomonee.

WEAU will be broadcasting Monday’s fireworks show live.

Chippewa Falls is hosting Music at the Riverfront Saturday this week at Riverfront Park. It’s usually held on Sundays. The live music event will culminate with fireworks.

Mississauga residents looking to see some impressive fireworks displays on Canada Day this Friday have several locations and shows to choose from in the city as they head out to join in the celebration.

After a two-year absence due to COVID-19, the colourful fireworks celebrations return to four locations across Mississauga.

In the downtown core, Canada Day is being marked at Celebration Square. The day’s events run from 4-10:30 p.m. and include live entertainment, food trucks, arcade machines, stilt walkers and much more.

The impressive fireworks display begins at 10:05 p.m. to round out the day’s activities.

On Mississauga’s waterfront, the annual Paint the Town Red Canada Day event in Port Credit offers up an array of fun activities culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at about 10:15 p.m.

The Port Credit celebration kicks off with a huge parade followed by family events and the fireworks display at Port Credit Memorial Park.

Paint the Town Red has attracted tens of thousands of visitors each year since its inception in 2003.

Farther north in the city, the Streetsville BIA hosts its annual Canada Day Celebration at Streetsville Village Square and Streetsville Memorial Park.

The square hosts several events and activities starting at 6 p.m. before the action shifts to Streetsville Memorial Park for some live music and the spectacular fireworks show.

Crafts, games, a Rotary barbecue, raffles and more are all on tap for the evening.

The Streetsville Pipes and Drums will lead everyone down to Memorial Park for the music and fireworks, the latter of which gets underway at about 10 p.m.

Up in Malton, in what Ward 5 Councillor Carolyn Parrish bills as Mississauga’s “largest and longest fireworks display,” Westwood Square Mall hosts its annual Canada Day show.

“Malton has had the city’s largest and longest fireworks display off the roof of Westwood Square Mall–outdoing even Celebration Square with a spectacular show set to music every year,” Parrish told residents via her newsletter.

The Malton fireworks also begin at about 10 p.m.

Admission to all Canada Day celebrations and the fireworks displays is free.

Music, Fireworks Highlight Host Of Local Fourth Of July Events

Area Fourth of July events are back with a bang this year.

With events largely curtailed the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the calendar is full this year with festivities and fireworks shows. The following is a list of events that center around Fourth of July gatherings across Chautauqua County.

CHERRY CREEK

The Cherry Creek Business and Community Association Inc. will hold its annual Independence Day celebration Saturday at the ballpark on Main Street. Events will include rides, food, vendors, and a beer and wine tent. A chicken barbecue sponsored by the Cherry Creek Volunteer Fire Department will take place in the pavilion beginning at 2 p.m., the same time a pie contest will begin under the tent.

Between 2 to 4 p.m., a classic car, truck and motorcycle cruise-in will be held. The Kokomo Time Band also will perform.

At 4 p.m., lineup for the parade down Main Street begins on Southside Avenue. The parade commences at 5 p.m.

Music by Midroom Drifters begins at 7 p.m. in the pavilion and will conclude at 10 p.m. with the beginning of the fireworks shows. Winners of the basket and item raffles will be announced at 8 p.m.

DUNKIRK

A three-day Fourth of July celebration in Dunkirk will include a slate of events, starting with the eighth annual Marauder Trotter 5k run/walk at 9 a.m. Saturday at Wright Park. At the park there also will be a community driving scavenger hunt beginning at 1 p.m.

There will be live music Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Memorial Park along with refreshments and vendors.

Events are capped off with a fireworks show at dusk.

BEMUS POINT

The Bemus Point Business Association will again host a fireworks show at 10 p.m. Sunday from the barges in Bemus Bay. A portion of Lakeside Drive, near the intersection of Lakeside and Main, will be closed around 9 p.m.

“This portion of the road will be closed for the duration of the fireworks show,” the Bemus Point Business Association said. “We encourage visitors to bring their chairs to this area to enjoy the display.”

The fireworks show also will be visible from the village park and can enjoyed from boats and docks around the Bemus Bay.

“We would like to thank our generous community members, business sponsors and event partners for their donations,” the association said. “We couldn’t put on such an amazing show without their support.”

SILVER CREEK

Silver Creek’s Independence Day celebration will take place at the lake front area with live music by the Kokomo Time Band from 6 to 9 p.m. and a fireworks display at dusk Sunday, the day before the holiday.

The village said it will host music in the park from 6 to 9 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: July 12, July 26, Aug. 9, Aug. 23. Food vendors will be at each event.

To coincide with the music, there also will be car cruise-ins July 12 and Aug. 9.

MAYVILLE

For the first time since 2019, Mayville will host a full day of Fourth of July events, including a parade with more than 100 groups registered to march.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and run until around noon. It will start at the courthouse on North Erie Street and continue on Route 394 to Chautauqua Lake. Routes 430 and 394 will be closed beginning at 9 a.m.

“It’s great, both economically and also just to get back to that quality of life,” Mayville Mayor Ken Shearer said. “Having the parade back is a great feeling.”

This year’s parade theme is “America: Stronger together.”

“With COVID and everything, it was just one of those things that we want — America, stronger together,” said Beth Sacilowski, a member of the Chautauqua County July 4th Committee.

In 2020, there were no activities during the day at Lakeside Park. Last year, there were a handful of vendors, but it was still limited.

This year, everything in the park will return. Activities will include face painting, a petting zoo by Mike Morton of Clear Creek Carriages, live music, food, games and raffles. Sacilowski said they have some new vendors as well.

LAKEWOOD

The village’s Fourth of July Summerfest returns to full form Monday beginning with the annual Firecracker Run at 9 a.m. Registration will take place from 7-8:15 a.m. at the park.

From noon to 10 p.m., vendors will offer a variety of food, gifts and crafts on Chautauqua Avenue. Music by Smokehouse will be available at Richard O. Hartley Park from 6 to 10 p.m.

A fireworks show will begin at 10 p.m.

FINDLEY LAKE

A chicken barbecue will begin at noon Monday at the Findley Lake Fire Department. The annual duck race will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the water flume on the north end of the lake followed by a boat parade at 2 p.m.

A fireworks display will kick off at 10 p.m.
