Google Searches For Extreme Weather Events Peaked This Summer As U.S. Battled Floods And Heatwaves

Topline

Online search interest in phrases like “heat wave” hit an all-time peak this summer as record-breaking high temperatures and extreme weather events across the U.S. are increasingly drawing public attention to the climate crisis.

Key Facts

According to U.S. Google Trends data, online searches hit an all-time peak in July this year as several cities across the U.S. broke decades-old or all-time temperature records.

With the exception of 2020—when most of the focus was on the Covid-19 pandemic—search interest in the phrase “heat wave” has consistently peaked higher every summer for the past five years.

Extreme temperatures across the U.S. have led to unprecedented droughts in parts of the country and this is reflected in Google Trends data showing searches for “drought” peaked twice in the last five years—in June 2021 and July 2022.

U.S.-wide search interest in the term “floods” for the year 2022 also peaked in the last two weeks as at least four separate regions across the country witnessed once-in-a-millennium floods.

Despite the rising search interest in these extreme weather events, searches for “climate change” in the U.S. has remained largely steady except for a very steep spike on Earth Day in 2022—likely a result of the Google Doodle published on that day.

Globally, however, searches for the phrase “climate crisis’ hit a ten-year high in March as parts of South Asia witnessed a deadly and record-breaking heatwave.

Tangent

As Europe witnessed its own unprecedented heat wave this summer, the region also saw similar search trends. The term “heat wave” hit an all-time peak last month in the U.K. as the country faced its hottest day on record. In France, search for “vague de chaleur” also hit a record peak as the country faced hot temperatures and devastating forest fires. The search term “ola de calor” hit an identical peak in Spain—which reported more than 1,000 heat-related deaths in June.

Key Background

Climate scientists have raised the alarm that the record heat waves hitting parts of Europe and North America may soon become the norm as climate change drives average global temperatures higher. An unchecked rise in temperatures could lead to more severe droughts and even more devastating forest fires. President Joe Biden has called climate change “an existential threat” to the U.S. and the rest of the world. Earlier this week, Senate Democrats passed a landmark bill—which the House is voting on Friday—that will earmark hundreds of billions of dollars for energy and climate programs.

What To Watch For

However, global climate action could be complicated by Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine and rising tensions between China and the U.S. The energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine has forced countries like Germany to reactivate coal plants. Angered by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan last week, China has suspended all climate talks with the U.S.

‘Drag Queen Story Hour’ Floods UK with 70 Events, Parents Push Back Calling It a Form of Child ‘Abuse’

'Drag Queen Story Hour' Floods UK with 70 Events, Parents Push Back Calling It a Form of Child 'Abuse'

More and more men are dressing up like women in provocative clothing to read books to young children, and it’s provoking fresh fury from parents and others who disagree with the idea.

Drag Queen Story Hour has been a serious concern in the U.S. for many years, and now those same concerns are growing in the U.K. as well.

The storytime events have taken place in libraries, schools, and bookstores over the past few years, as those involved try to convince impressionable kids that the LGBTQ lifestyle is normal and exciting.

In the U.K., many opposing Drag Queen Story Hour are speaking out by urging local councils and libraries to reject the events as distasteful and inappropriate.

Family Education Trust is encouraging parents to get involved and find out if their local library is allowing a Drag Queen Story Hour. The group even provided a letter template for them to fill out, outlining their opposition to the events.

According to the group’s website, the drag queens have nearly 70 activities planned in 20 different areas across the U.K. this summer.

Safe Schools Alliance UK (SSAUK) is another group that opposes drag queen-related events. Teachers and parents are joining forces to speak out against the men who wear gobs of makeup, huge wigs, and vulgar outfits.

“Drag queens entering children’s environments is already an abuse of power,” the group said, adding that it’s being “pushed as the new, inclusive thing to do” so children will develop a deeper love for reading.

SSAUK continues, “Boundaries are imposed by schools to keep children safe from themselves, from each other and from exploitative adults. Drag is a form of adult entertainment, and as such can never be appropriate for the age, developmental stage, or background of pupils.”

In a statement, Drag Queen Story Hour UK said every performer is checked for a criminal record and receives safety training, according to GBN News.

“Performances are very similar to pantomimes, except they are explicitly literacy-focused and support inclusivity in communities and an interest in reading,” said a spokesperson for the drag queen group.

But CBN News previously reported that some drag queens in the U.S. have been exposed for having criminal records that involve sexually assaulting young children.

Some have also worked as transgender prostitutes and porn actors.

B.C. floods were most costly weather event in provincial history: insurance bureau | CBC News

B.C. floods were most costly weather event in provincial history: insurance bureau | CBC News

November’s floods in British Columbia that swamped homes and farms, swept away roads and bridges and killed five people are now the most costly weather event in provincial history.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada made the statement as it released the latest cost estimate of $675 million, and that’s only for damage that was insured.

The previous estimate was $515 million in losses, but the bureau says in a statement that much of the increase is due to business claims in places where commercial insurance is more available.

In contrast, it says many residents were located in high-risk flood areas where insurance coverage isn’t available, which could cost all levels of government “well into the billions of dollars.”

So-called atmospheric rivers flowed over southwestern B.C. for days in November, bringing record rainfall and quickly swelling waterways.

Mudslides swept people away in their cars, rivers carved new routes and washed out highways and bridges, cutting off major highways into the Interior, which stopped the supply chain from the coast to the rest of the country.

“While the insured losses from the November flood events are increasing, it is clear that the overwhelming majority of costs for this disaster will be borne by government,” said Aaron Sutherland, a vice-president with the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

The bureau is a member of the federal, provincial and territorial task force on flood insurance and says it has put forward options to create a residential flood insurance program that includes a public-private partnership model.

It says that idea would help make affordable insurance available to residents in high-risk areas.
