Say it with flowers: This free Vancouver event will celebrate fierce, famous females in floral form

Say it with flowers: This free Vancouver event will celebrate fierce, famous females in floral form

Art made up of mannequins covered in real flowers will honour queens, artists, and activists

An international series of floral events celebrating influential women will be popping up in Vancouver this summer.

Visitors to the city core will be able to catch a number of pieces featuring mannequins covered in flowers in the fashion of each of the famous women. The series means queens, artists and activists will be installed around the city in gowns, dresses and other costumes made of brightly coloured petals.

The event series, titled FEMMES, is being organized by Vancouver’s Fleur de Villes. In a press release they say the series is dedicated to “culturally, politically, and historically significant women.” Along with the petal-bedecked mannequin, there will be QR codes linking to bios on each of the women.

Each city will have a different series of women; the first in the series has launched in Miami with depictions of Audrey Hepburn, Cleopatra and Frida Kahlo, among others.

Who will be in the Vancouver event has yet to be announced, though in a press release announcing the series event organizers note west coast Canadian artist Emily Carr will be depicted at some point.

Vancouver is the sixth date in the series, with the plant-based artwork on display from June 3 to 12 (Toronto and Montreal are just before). Specific locations of pieces haven’t been announced, although it will take place in downtown Vancouver. Along with the flowery art a series of events will be coming as well, though specifics haven’t been released yet.

“We felt that this was the ideal time to launch Fleurs de Villes FEMMES as people are starved for in-real-life, tactile and inspirational experiences,” says Fleur de Vile co-founder Tina Barkley in a press release.

– Lewiston-based humane society to host free vaccine events

LEWISTON — The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society is partnering with national nonprofit Petco Love to host two free pet vaccine events on Saturdays, March 12 and 26.

Petco Love established March as “National Pet Vaccination Month” to encourage pet parents to keep their pets up to date on vaccinations and will provide free pet vaccines to the society for family pets in need. As puppy and kitten season approaches, pet exposure to contagious and deadly diseases — parvovirus, distemper, and panleukopenia — increases but is preventable with a simple vaccine, according to a news release from the society.

The society aims to vaccinate 350 pets through this effort. The first event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon at the 55 Strawberry Ave. shelter in Lewiston. The second vent will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 26 at the Minot Town Hall, 329 Woodman Hill Road in Minot.

Vaccines distributed through the Petco Love initiative will be the DAPPv Canine and HCP Feline vaccines. The society also will be distributing free rabies vaccines — people should bring proof of previous vaccine history.

The Give Pets Their Best Shot initiative makes crucial pet vaccines accessible to pet parents who may be experiencing financial challenges and assures that cost is not a barrier to protecting pets from preventable diseases.

“Treatment for these deadly diseases can be prohibitively expensive for many pet parents,” said Susanne Kogut, Petco Love president. “By providing free vaccines to those in need, we can help these pets live a healthy life. Through this national effort and our other Petco Love Care initiatives, we continue our 22-year history of strategic investments and innovation to end unnecessary pet euthanasia.”

B.C. vying for multiple international sports events to boost tourism – The Free Press

B.C. vying for multiple international sports events to boost tourism - The Free Press

B.C. is actively pursuing the possibility of hosting multiple international sports tournaments by the end of the decade to give a much-needed boost to the tourism industry.

The province has publicly expressed support for hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2025 Invictus Games and the 2030 Winter Olympics. The Olympic bid is being led by the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam First Nations, making it the first-ever Indigenous-led Olympic bid.

“We have a need to attract people back to B.C. for our tourism industry and hospitality sector,” Premier John Horgan said at a Feb. 8 news conference. “The prospect of events, whether it be FIFA, the Invictus games — which is very much in play as well — and the Indigenous-led movement to see the 2030 Olympic bid come back to Vancouver-Whistler are all things that we’re happy to entertain, provided we have a full understanding of what the costs will be and we can transparently make that clear to the people who will have to pay for much of it.”

Horgan added that the province hasn’t gotten much use out of B.C. Place after pouring $514 million into renovations prior to the 2010 Winter Olympics. He said regardless of whether B.C. is chosen as a host city for any sports tournaments he wants to see it used more for concerts, conferences and events.

In an email to Black Press, Minister of Tourism, Sport and Culture Melanie Mark said hosting any one of the events would be a great opportunity for B.C.’s tourism sector which has been battered by the COVID-19 pandemic, a brutal 2021 fire season and the November atmospheric river event that washed away many of the province’s major highways.

Both Mark and Horgan confirmed the province is in talks with FIFA to explore Vancouver becoming a host city for the 2026 World Cup.

“We’ve also had preliminary discussions with the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic committees about the concepts of a 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games and how it could advance provincial priorities for tourism, reconciliation, housing, transportation, and the environment,” she said.

The province has seemingly ruled out a bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Victoria led by B.C. publisher (and Black Press owner) David Black. While the province has expressed public support for the other events, little has been said about the Commonwealth Games.

When pressed on the issue, the ministry of tourism, sport and culture said it is open to major events that bring economic benefits but noted that Hamilton is the confirmed Canadian candidate city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The first-ever Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton in 1930.

Walt Judas, CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of B.C. said he supports the province’s efforts to attract major international sporting events.

“One of the things we’ve said is that while due diligence still has to be done — when you do a cost-benefit analysis of hosting any major sporting event so we understand, as a destination, any of the drawbacks that hosting an event might have — the advantages far outweigh any of those drawbacks.”

Judas noted the events represent a good opportunity to invest in events infrastructure and the events provide a sense of community spirit. One of the most important factors from a tourism perspective is major sporting events offer a destination branding opportunity for B.C.

As the world opens back up to travel, tourism destinations across the world are vying for tourists. Judas said the exposure and media attention that comes from major sporting events would give B.C. an edge in marketing itself as a tourism destination.

Most of the sports events will be centred around Vancouver. However, Judas said other regions of B.C. can still benefit from the opportunity.

“Say if Invictus was held in the Vancouver area, there’s nothing stopping meetings from taking place beforehand in Victoria, Kelowna or elsewhere.”

He suggested bundling or packaging games experiences with hotels, attractions and activities as part of the entire experience.

It remains to be seen whether any of B.C.’s attempts to attract a major sporting event will come to fruition. But the message is clear: the province is ready to host events and welcome the world back to B.C.

Formula 1: Three sprint events confirmed for 2022, with more points on offer

Formula 1: Three sprint events confirmed for 2022, with more points on offer

Sprint events will take place in Imola, Austria and Brazil – while the top eight finishers will all score points for the shortened race, which sets the grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix

Last Updated: 14/02/22 6:02pm

Formula 1 will hold three sprint races this year after a compromise was found over money concerns, while the events will also offer more points.

A success last year in increasing action and excitement with a grid-setting short Saturday race, F1 had originally intended to double the amount of sprints to six in 2022, although the top teams were understood to have wanted an increase to the cost cap to facilitate the extra running.

Not willing to budge on its budget cap, F1 offered a compromise of three sprints – and that was approved ‘unanimously’ at the F1 Commission meeting on Monday.

The three sprint races will take place in Imola (April 23), Austria (July 9) and Brazil (November 12).

There will also be a change to the points-scoring system. Last year when the format was trialled, only the top three drivers scored points, with three points for the winner, two for second and one for third.

Craig Slater reports that the FIA are proposing ‘structural changes’ following their enquiry into the controversial ending to last season’s Abu Dhabi GP.

This season the winner of the shortened race – which determines the grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix – will now receive eight points with seven for second and so on down to one point for eighth place.

Meanwhile, the FIA confirmed that no points will be awarded unless at least two laps have been completed without a safety car.

The new rule comes into force following last season’s two-lap, rain-hit Belgian GP which ran entirely behind the safety car.
