ESPN Events Invitational Bracket Revealed, Pirates To Face Memphis - Seton Hall University Athletics

South Orange, N.J. — The 2022 ESPN Events Invitational bracket has been revealed and the Seton Hall men’s basketball team will take on Memphis at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 24 at State Farm Field House at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla.

The game will be televised on ESPN News and the Pirates will face either Oklahoma or Nebraska in their second game. On the other side of the bracket on Nov. 24, Florida State will face Siena at 11 a.m. followed by Ole Miss vs. Stanford at 1:30 p.m.

The Thanksgiving matchup marks the fifth all-time meeting between the Pirates and the Tigers. Seton Hall last played Memphis on Nov. 21, 2008 at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The Pirates’ lone win in the series was a 103-71 victory on Jan. 22, 1953 in Walsh Gymnasium. Three of the the four meetings have come on a neutral court.

Memphis is now added to what will be another challenging non-conference schedule for the Pirates under first-year head coach Shaheen Holloway. The Hall is set to face four NCAA Tournament teams from last season in Memphis, Iowa (Nov. 16, Prudential Center), Rutgers (Dec. 11, Jersey Mike’s Arena) and Kansas (Dec. 1, Allen Fieldhouse), the defending national champions.

Seton Hall is 15-6 in its last 20 early-season, multi-team event games, including championship runs at the 2014 Paradise Jam Tournament and the 2018 Wooden Legacy Tournament. The Pirates last competed at the ESPN Events Invitational in 2016-17.

The 2022 ESPN Events Invitational, a bracket-format tournament, will feature 12 games over the three days. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a bracket-tournament format. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship matchup Sunday, Nov. 27.

All games will air on the ESPN networks, including Sunday’s championship game on ESPN (1:30 p.m. ET).

Anna Hall Leads Heptathlon at USATF Combined Events Championships Through Four Events – Florida Gators

Anna Hall Leads Heptathlon at USATF Combined Events Championships Through Four Events - Florida Gators
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Florida heptathlete Anna Hall put up a pair of personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles (13.21) and the 200 meters (23.14) to take the lead through four events at the USATF Combined Events Championships on Friday evening.

The 3781 points that Hall scored on the first day of action is 21 more than she scored on the first day of the Texas Relays back in March, putting her on pace for a new personal record.

Hall got things started on Friday afternoon by laying down a big-time personal best of 13.21 (+1.8) in the 100-meter hurdles.

Her mark moves her into No. 9 all-time in Florida history in the 100-meter hurdles.

The Highlands Ranch, Colo. native cleared 1.76m/5-9.25 in the High Jump and threw 12.51/41-0.5 in the Shot Put to put her into fifth heading into the 200 meters, the final event of the day.

Hall kicked it into high gear to close out Friday’s action, running 23.14 in the 200 meters to take first, score 1065 points and move all the way into the lead after the conclusion of four events.

That mark of 23.14 is just one-hundredth of a second off the all-time collegiate best set in a Heptathlon 200 meters (23.13).

Hall’s outstanding performances in the hurdles and 200 meters ensured a first-day lead against the rest of the field.

She returns to action tomorrow to close out the competition with the Long Jump and the Javelin before ending with one of her premier events, the 800 meters.

Hall needs to finish in the Top 3, or in fourth with Kendell Williams in the top 3, to secure her spot on Team USA for this summer’s World Championships.

If she makes the American team, Hall will also need to secure the World Championships qualifying standard (6420) during this weekend or at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships.

Action in Fayetteville picks back up at 4:00 p.m. EST with the Long Jump and will run through the 800 meters at 6:15 p.m. EST tomorrow evening.

Heptathlon Standings (Through Four Events)
1. Anna Hall (3781)
2. Chari Hawkins (3750)
3. Michelle Atherley (3673)
4. Taliyah Brooks (3662)
5. Kendell Williams (3659)

St. Joseph Scollard Hall students take part in Indigenous educational event

St. Joseph Scollard Hall students take part in Indigenous educational event

Grade 10 and 11 students at St. Joseph’s Scollard Hall took part in an Indigenous educational event at the school Monday morning.

Students are being urged to challenge themselves and to share the parts of their life that make them the most enthusiastic. For Indigenous people, this is also known as finding your spark.

“I think a lot of people don’t know about the spark and the Indigenous traditions with the spark,” said Grace Couchie, Indigenous student trustee at St. Joseph Scollard Hall.

“I think it’s very important to know that drugs and alcohol can dim your spark. There’s also things to help build it up, and to create good relationships in your life.”

While numerous educational Indigenous events have taken place at the school recently, staff told CTV News students need to continue to learn about the past and what can be done for the future.

“We want to be people who are continuously collaborating and working in harmony and working for the good of all,” Katherine Zapalla, a world religions teacher at St. Joseph Scollard Hall.

“To listen to each other, encourage that spark in one another, and whatever you do, don’t contribute to things that diminish people’s sparks.”

Couchie also hopes events like Mondays will continue to happen at her school.

“I think it’s really important because reconciliation isn’t just a one-time thing — it needs to go on and it needs to continue,” she said.

“We didn’t have many activities or things in the school, but I think I’ve started quite a bit. We’ve started Orange Shirt Day, and Treaty Week, and now things like this, we also had an Indigenous speakers week within the month of April … So, I think it’s getting better and it’s really exciting to see.”

BP announces Black Maternal Health Week events at Borough Hall – QNS.com

health

In recognition of Black Maternal Health Week, which begins Monday, April 11, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards will host a pair of events centering on the childbearing journey of Black women from conception to birth and beyond.

On Tuesday, April 12 at 6 p.m.at Borough Hall in Kew Gardens, Richards and Deputy Borough President Ebony Young will host “The Birthing Experience,” an evening that will shine a light on Black women’s maternal, mental and reproductive health care needs, as well as the services and programs available to them.

“Few have felt the harsh sting of health care inequity more than Black women, especially new and expecting Black mothers, who unjustly experience significantly higher rates of maternal mortality than any other group,” Richards said. “It’s an honor to recognize Black Maternal Health Week at Queens Borough Hall for the first time, as we uplift new and expecting Black mothers and propel these critical conversations forward.”

The program will include a panel discussion featuring several health care professionals, birthing experts, and maternal health advocates, a Q&A segment, a short documentary screening, trivia and maternal product giveaways.

Participants will also have an opportunity to connect with city agencies, community-based organizations and maternal service providers who will be tabling at the event at the Helen Marshall Cultural Center at Borough Hall.

“Black motherhood is a beautiful and powerful experience. But decades of disinvestment in the health of Black mothers, who unjustly experience significantly higher rates of maternal mortality than any other group,” Young said.

On Wednesday, April 13 at 5 p.m., Richards will co-sponsor a Diaper Day of Action along with Morning Star Church and Councilwoman Nantasha Williams, who will host a free giveaway at her district office, located at 172-12 Linden Blvd. in St. Albans.

“Maternal mortality rates have been on a steady incline for Black women, while solutions to address this issue and community awareness have continued to lag,” Williams said. “The Diaper Day of Action will raise awareness around the inequities that persist for Black women, and support much-needed conversations around solution-based approaches to eradicate this birth injustice.”

The collection of approximately 2,000 diapers, donated to the Queens Borough President’s Office by Amazon and government relations firm Kasirer, will be distributed at no cost on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“I encourage all our neighbors to join us at these two events as Queens comes together to support our courageous and inspirational Black mothers across The World’s Borough,” Young said.

Members of the community who wish to attend either or both events can RSVP here.
