MDOT to hold annual Trash Bash events

MDOT to hold annual Trash Bash events

Below is a press release from the Mississippi Department of Transportation:

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will hold its annual Trash Bash events from March 17 – May 12, 2022.

MDOT in partnership with Keep Mississippi Beautiful holds Trash Bash events statewide as part of the national Great American Cleanup campaign. Trash Bash is MDOT’s longest running event, and has been in existence since 1989.

Trash Bash draws the public’s attention to the negative impact of roadway litter by allowing MDOT employees to step away from their normal duties for one day to pick up litter from highly visible areas. MDOT employees hope to set a good example by participating in this community event.

“MDOT spends nearly four million dollars annually picking up litter,” said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. “Please make sure you dispose of your trash properly to keep Mississippi’s highways and interstates litter-free.”

This year’s Jackson Trash Bash will be held on Thursday, March 24. Volunteers will be picking up litter on State Route 25 in Rankin County.

Listed below are other Trash Bash events that will be held in various MDOT districts around the state.

District 1 – Lee County – April 28

District 2 – Panola County – May 12

District 3 – Yazoo County – March 17

District 5 – Newton County – April 7

District 6 – Harrison County -April 7

District 7 – McComb – April 5

FINA cancels swim meet in Russia, to ‘not hold any future events if crisis continues’

FINA cancels World Junior Championship in Russia

Problems seem to mount for Russia in terms of hosting international events with swimming governing body FINA deciding to cancel the World junior Swimming Championship. The event was all set to take place in Kazan, Russia, in late August however the Russia Ukraine war has now prompted the swimming governing body to take such a major step.

FINA cancels World Junior Swimming Championships

FINA has released a statement stating that it was looking for a replacement host for the event. The statement said,

“FINA remains extremely concerned with the continuing war in Ukraine and following ongoing consultation with athletes and stakeholders from the aquatics family, FINA can now confirm that the 8th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships and FINA will not be holding any future events in Russia if this grave crisis continues”.

Before cancelling the World Junior Swimming Championship, FINA on Friday had called off a men’s water polo World League match in St. Petersburg next month while an Artistic Swimming and Diving World Series event scheduled for April in Kazan was also cancelled.

Other international events were cancelled due to Russia Ukraine war

Besides the Swimming event, the Russia Ukraine war has also resulted in the cancellation of many other sporting events.  The UEFA has moved the 2022 Champions League final out of Russia in light of the conflict. The football associations of Poland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic have threatened to boycott Russia in their upcoming World Cup qualifier games. Formula One has already called off the Russian Grand Prix, which was scheduled to be held in September.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has moved the Chess Olympiad and FIDE Congress out of Russia. The events were due to be held in Russia later this year. The International Ski Federation has cancelled or moved five World Cup events that were scheduled to be held in Russia.  The International Judo Federation (IJF) has cancelled its Grand Slam event in Kazan, Russia. IJF on Sunday. The Federation also suspended Russian President Vladimir Putin’s status as ‘Honorary President and Ambassador’ of the International Judo Federation. The Russian president is a keen judoka and had attended the sport during the 2012 London Olympics.

Arts Council to hold monthly events starting in March – The Clanton Advertiser

Arts Council to hold monthly events starting in March - The Clanton Advertiser

By JOYANNA LOVE/ Managing Editor

Art Quest is coming to the Chilton County Arts Council, kicking off with March Gourd Madness.

Organizer Mack Gothard said the events will be a way to bring more attention to the arts council, while providing a place for local artists to display and sell their work.

Monthly events will feature classes, exhibits and vendors at the Arts Council building, 500 Fifth Avenue N in Clanton, on the first Friday of each month March to November. Each day will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The return of March Gourd Madness will be the first of these events on March 4 and 5 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

Gourd art will be on display and for sale. Those interested in learning the art form or trying a new project can take one of the classes.

Karen Stone will be teaching a class on pointillism to make an owl on a gourd on March 4. On March 5, the class will be about making Santa Claus and gnome ornaments from gourds. Each class is $45 and includes the supplies needed for the project. Space is limited, so registration is required by calling 205-245-9441 or emailing chiltonartscouncil@gmail.com.

Other gourd artists will be onsite doing demonstrations and answering any questions attendees might have.

“A lot of people in our area go to estate sales and different yard sales on Friday mornings, so I said let’s try Friday morning and see how works,” Gothard said.

While galleries and art classes will be available in the Arts Council building, arts and crafts vendors will be set up outside. The vendor fee for members is $15. The fee for non-members is $20.

Those interested in participating in any of the first Fridays as a vendor or teaching a class can contact Gothard at 205-245-9441 or chiltonartscouncil@gmail.com.

Themes for upcoming months are still being set.
