Landlord clashes with Church Stretton mayor in row over Platinum Jubilee events

Regulars at the Yew Tree Inn in All Stretton had planned an all-village celebration of the event for Friday, with landlady Lauren Medlicott spending a month planning it and getting the necessary permissions to close the road just outside the pub.

But permission was suddenly revoked last week, shortly after Church Stretton mayor Andy Munro had visited the pub and asked Ms Medlicott to move the event to the car park.

She said: “A lot of time and effort had gone into the planning for the street party, including a lot of time spent filling in the necessary paperwork required which as you can imagine was not inconsiderable.

“We had consulted with the village residents about the partial road closure and in particular, the residents of the the care home opposite the pub who were looking forward to celebrating the jubilee with the rest of the villagers.

“It seems strange that shortly after we had a visit from the mayor asking us to move the event to the car park we had a copy of the original permission letter from Shropshire Council, saying simply it had been revoked.

“We were trying to do something for the village, not for the pub or the regulars, this would have been an inclusive event and with closing the road – it would have made it a proper street party.”

She said the pub planned to mark the occasion with their own event on Friday to which everyone was welcome.

Councillor Munro, who represents All Stretton on the town council, said he had a number of concerns about the event.

He said: “They include not least the closure of the Shrewsbury Road in front of the pub and the diversion of buses and all traffic which could cause congestion, plus access by emergency services to Stretton Hall nursing home.

“Some of the residents in the village have contacted me about this and I don’t think it is appropriate to close the road for the majority of the day when the pub has a large car park that could be used for the event.

“There is an alternative event being held and organised by All Stretton Village Society on Friday and a jubilee celebration the next day and whilst people are free to celebrate in the way they see fit, there has been a lot of time and effort gone into the planning of these events.”

Langley flight museum pays tribute to Queen’s platinum jubilee – Aldergrove Star

Langley flight museum pays tribute to Queen’s platinum jubilee - Aldergrove Star

As members of the Royal Family tour Canada this week, news of a queen-inspired gift arrives in Langley.

As this year marks the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the federal government announced $2.14 million funding for community events and projects across the country – including an upcoming Canada Day celebration in Langley.

The Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley received $4,100 to host a family-oriented commemoration on July 1, one of many grants announced by Minister of Canadian Heritage Pablo Rodriguez.

“For more than 70 years, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has been a model of dedication and a privileged witness to the growth of and accomplishments of Canadians, and to the values that unite us,” Rodriguez said.

“That’s why I’m pleased to announce the funded projects that will allow Canadians across the country to learn more about our sovereign, celebrate this historic anniversary and reflect on the meaning of public service in today’s society.”

The federal government launched the tribute on Feb. 6, and will host numerous events including the Royal Tour, a national illumination initiative, exhibits, commemorative gardens, educational resources, and a commemorative stamp and coins.

There will be a total of 360 community events and three major national projects.

Funds for the flight museum will be utilized towards a display connecting the Crown to aviation in Canada, and how Queen Elizabeth has connected with Canadians, according to the museum website.

The theme of the Canada Day festivities and display will explore each of Queen’s visits to Canada, and the specific use of aircraft to complete each tour.

Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall kicked off the three-day royal tour Monday in St. John’s and are travelling to Canada’s Capital Region today (Wednesday, May 18), followed by Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories on Thursday.

What events are scheduled during the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday?

What events are scheduled during the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday?

The UK will mark the Queen’s 70th year on the throne in a special four-day bank holiday weekend in June.

Her Majesty became the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee on 6 February 2022. Her significant milestone will be celebrated in a number of events and initiatives taking place across the UK during the long weekend.

These will include public events and community activities, as well as national moments of reflection on the Queen’s 70 years of service.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said that more than 70,000 “Big Jubilee Lunches” have been planned across all four UK nations, with an expected 10 million people set to celebrate with their neighbours during the weekend.

Culture secretary Nadine Dorries said the UK will “celebrate it with tradition, pomp and circumstance”.

“I hope that people and communities across the country will come together to pay tribute to Her Majesty – whether that be to watch on big screens or toasting Her Majesty at a Big Jubilee Lunch with their neighbours or coming together in their local village hall.”

Here is the full schedule of celebrations taking place across the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

When is the Platinum Jubilee?

The extended four-day bank holiday to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will take place from Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June.

Thursday 2 June

On this day, the Queen’s Birthday Parade will begin at 11am. Trooping the Colour marks the official birthday of the British Sovereign and usually takes place on the second Saturday in June.

However, this year, the ceremonial event will take place two days earlier as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The 1st Battalion, Irish Guards, and more than 1,200 officers and soldiers from the Household Division will put on a display of military pageantry on Horse Guards Parade, alongside hundreds of Army musicians and around 240 horses.

The parade will be completed with a six-minute flypast of more than 70 aircraft from the Royal Navy, the Army and Royal Air Force, which will soar over Buckingham Palace.

The Queen is expected to watch the flypast from the palace balcony with other working members of the royal family.

Platinum Jubilee Beacons will also be lit on the first day of the long weekend.

A special ceremony will be held at Buckingham Palace at 9pm to light the Principal beacon, which involves The Tree of Trees, a 21m-high “tree” made of 350 smaller trees.

Other beacon events will also take place, including community beacons that will be lit by communities, charities and other groups, and Commonwealth beacons in all 54 capital cities of the Commonwealth.

Friday 3 June

A Service of Thanksgiving will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral to give thanks for the Queen’s reign.

Great Paul, the largest church bell in the country, will be rung for the first royal occasion in its history for the service.

The ringing of Great Paul will be followed by a peal of bells to celebrate.

The bell was made in 1882 but fell silent in the 1970s due to a broken mechanism and was restored in 2021.

Saturday 4 June

The Queen is expected to attend the Derby at Epson Downs on Saturday 4 June with other members of the royal family.

The day will also be marked with a Platinum Party at the Palace, hosted by Kirsty Young and Roman Kemp. The event will be broadcast live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and across the BBC network.

The concert will include three stages, 3D projections across the front of Buckingham Palace and an in-person audience of 22,000, including 10,000 tickets allocated in a public ballot and 5,000 tickets for key workers.

While the full line-up of acts will be announced by the BBC in the coming weeks, the first name on the list is British musician George Ezra.

Sunday 5 June

Celebrations conclude on Sunday with the Platinum Jubilee Pageant, which will see thousands of performers process down The Mall.

A giant dragon puppet the size of a double decker bus will feature in the procession, as well as corgis, acrobats, unicorns, dancers and circus acts.

According to DCMS, the grand finale will showcase 150 “national treasures”, including Ed Sheeran.

Millions of people will also sit down to a Big Jubilee Lunch in the afternoon as more than 200,000 local events have been planned, including screenings, street parties and lunches.

UK preparing for Queen’s platinum jubilee with thousands of events

The UK is preparing to celebrate the platinum jubilee weekend in style, with 1,458 public events and 1,775 street parties or private events officially registered to take place from 2 to 5 June.

The celebrations are spread out across the country, with 240 in and around London, 208 around Manchester, 133 near Birmingham, 98 in Scotland – including four in the Orkneys and one on the Isle of Lewis – 21 in Northern Ireland and two in Guernsey.

But the royal family’s platinum jubilee website is calling for more people to get involved. “There are lots of ways you can take part in the Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations, whether you are a local authority, school, business, community group, or want to get involved yourself,” said a spokesperson for the site, which is offering a Toolkit To Plan Your Jubilee. It includes free photographs of the queen, children’s games, recipes and a free to download platinum playlist that includes Ed Sheeran, the Spice Girls, Kylie Minogue and Elton John.

“The special extended bank holiday weekend will provide an opportunity for communities and people throughout the United Kingdom to come together to celebrate the historic milestone,” they added.

The country will spend a total of £823m celebrating the bank holiday weekend, spending an average of £83 each on food, drink and union flag-inspired decorations, according to MoneySupermarket.com. That is almost three-quarters more than the £480m that 34% of Britons said they planned to spend celebrating the royal wedding in 2018.

Waitrose has reported sales of Pimm’s are up by more than 260% on last year, while searches for Jubilee are up 176% on their website in the past two weeks. Searches for platinum jubilee food and drink are up 114% and garden party recipe up 59%.

John Lewis has similarly reported that searches for Jubilee on its website are up 55% week on week. While in a sign that street parties are already being organised, it said searches for outdoor chairs increased 33% compared with last month, with searches for bunting up 31%.

B&Q said it had sold 100,000 metres of bunting, while Sainsbury’s reported sales of union jack cake stands are up by 2,783% week on week.

The traditionally ironic English sense of humour is on show among the memorabilia available to mark the historic royal event: Mattel has launched a limited-edition Barbie doll inspired by the Queen, several gnomes shaped like the Queen have gone on sale on eBay, as well as mini-sculptures of the Queen inside a snow globe that plays the national anthem – and corgi-shaped salt shakers. Amazon and Etsy are stocking solar-powered bobble heads shaped like the Queen and even a “Pin the Diamond on the Crown” game.

In contrast, the public and private celebrations are largely steeped in tradition – albeit with a few unusual outliers: the South Bank in London will be holding an event to teach children to write punk songs and throwing an LGBTQI+ club night for insurgents with a “seditionary crew of abolitionists, unpardonables and ne’er-do-wells”.

In Bristol, a hippy singer-songwriter called I-Sha-Vii on a self-proclaimed mission to make the people around her happier, will perform.

Mainly, however, the festivities follow more time-honoured patterns: there will be a Make, Bake and Decorate a British Treat Box Fit for a Queen event in Manchester. Locals in Thornhill will cook pizza together. Bedale Community Library is throwing a tea party, while there will be a Picnic at the Pub in Shrewsbury.

There will be a wildflower display and free flower arranging in Beddington, a child’s funfair in West Sussex, readings of royal fairytales by author Sally Pomme Clayton based on her recent book The King with Dirty Feet. In Stoke Poges, there is set to be a Best of British Disco Karaoke.

There will be fireworks as national charities and councils light the UK’s 1,500-plus community and commonwealth beacons – a long-held tradition of celebrating royal jubilees, weddings and coronations stretching from across the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories.

The ceremony of lighting the beacons will begin at 9pm on Thursday 2 June when the principal beacon, involving The Tree of Trees – a 21-metre high “tree” constructed of 350 smaller trees) – is lit in a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Members of Girlguiding will light a further 70 beacons up and down the country, while former servicemen and women from Walking with the Wounded have said their lights will shine on top of the highest peaks of each of the four nations in the UK.
