Training programme to manage sports events, tournaments held

Training programme to manage sports events, tournaments held

Muscat: A training programme was organised in managing sports events and tournaments by the Ministry of Education, represented by the Directorate-General of Administrative Affairs – Department of Training and Rehabilitation, in cooperation with the Omani School Sports Federation and the Ocean Institute.

The training programme kicked-off on Sunday morning, and will continue until Thursday at Al Amal Club.

The implementation of this training programme comes in light of the increase in the number of events organised annually by the sports committees in the educational governorates, which reach nearly 100 sports events in all governorates and require organising by specialists in managing events.

The programme targets 34 employees of the Office of the Omani School Sports Federation and the educational governorates to provide them with effective management skills and accurate planning.

Participants in the programme will obtain the necessary qualification to work in the management of sports events, through several themes, including methods of organising, evaluating, and managing sports events, financial and accounting management of sports events, management of sponsorship, financiers, designers, suppliers, stakeholders and the public, and attracting, managing and training employees and volunteers to work in sporting events, marketing sports events, and managing risks related to sports events.

The Forks changes for Canada Day events praised

The Forks changes for Canada Day events praised

Steve Morris has watched The Forks’ Canada Day fireworks for as long as he can remember. He always looked forward to his July 1 tradition but isn’t upset it’s gone.

The Forks announced the replacement of its traditional festivities Friday with a new event called “A New Day,” which will feature activities such as storytelling tents, powwow dances, drummers and sporting tournaments in collaboration with the Indigenous community.

“I think this is a great substitution because it’s important to understand that culture and history. In previous years we have learned the importance of educating ourselves and others,” Morris said. “There’s going to be a lot of people who are upset the regular celebration is gone, but this is the right way to go about it.”

Morris has Lakota heritage and will visit The Forks on July 1 to enjoy the new event.

“People could learn a lot about the culture if they come in with an open mind. Watching traditional dances and hearing the songs is an uplifting spiritual experience. The beat of the drum is the heartbeat of Mother Nature.”

Throughout the day, ceremonies will be led by Elders Wanbdi Wakita and Pahan Pte San Win and an oral history tour will be given by Elder Barb Nepinak.

Indigenous siblings Ryan and April Hodgins said they appreciate the efforts The Forks has made in reconciliation.

“I think this is a step in the right direction. The Forks is a place where a lot of people meet and it holds a history for the community. I think it will be an influential day and I’m looking forward to attending,” Ryan said. “Canada Day has gained a new meaning and more people will start to realize that if they come.”

April is hopeful that more days to educate the public on Indigenous history follow the July 1 event.

“I’m an Indigenous woman and I wasn’t taught most of my history growing up. We need to see changes in schools and teach the true history of First Nations people in Manitoba. This new event is a start and a good way to emphasize education over celebration.”

When Cam McNaughtan first heard the regular celebrations were cancelled, he was disappointed, but after hearing more about the reasoning, he understands the change.

“I’m always interested in learning and educating myself on things that I don’t know about. Canada Day was always a great place for the city to come together as one, but the Indigenous community is the foundation of Canada and it’s important to remember that.”

McNaughtan said he will miss watching the fireworks, but will still join the festivities.

The event will begin at 8 a.m. with a morning ceremony at the Oodena Celebration Circle.

Gymnastics Sweeps Four Events and All-Around Against Kentucky

BATON ROUGE – The fifth-ranked LSU Gymnastics team scored a 197.450 in front of 12,838 fans in a loss to 10th-ranked Kentucky Friday night inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

The Wildcats took the team win with a 197.500 in the SEC finale. LSU’s crowd marked the sixth-highest in the history of the gymnastics program.

“We didn’t do our job tonight,” head coach Jay Clark said. “We had a lot of distractions in warmups, and we were not as dialed in as we have been. There were problems with a lot of landings, which was frustrating. I think the way we performed and the way it ended really stung, and I think they will come out hungry.”

LSU seniors Sami Durante and Sarah Edwards along with sophomore Haleigh Bryant swept the event and all-around. Bryant scored a 9.95 on vault, bars and beam. Her score of 39.75 in the all-around marked a new career high. Durante also took home bars with a 9.95 and Edwards anchored floor with a 9.925.

The Tigers opened vault with a 49.350 and fell behind the Wildcats. Sami Durante opened with a 9.875. Elena Arenas and KJ Johnson each scored a 9.85 and Kiya Johnson earned a 9.825. Bryant anchored the rotation with a. 9.95.

On bars, Kiya Johnson and Arenas each scored a 9.825. Olivia Dunne earned a 9.875 and Bryant followed with her career high 9.95. Durante anchored with a 9.95 to post a 49.425 on bars.

The Tigers scored another 49.425 on beam in the third rotation. Christina Desiderio opened with a 9.90 and Arenas followed with a 9.825. Dean returned to the lineup with a 9.85 and Bryant matched her career high with a 9.95. Freshman Aleah Finnegan also posted a 9.90 in the fifth spot for the Tigers.

LSU was unable to find its landings on floor for a 49.250. Dunne and KJ Johnson scored a 9.80 and Finnegan put up a 9.825. Bryant scored a 9.90 in the fifth spot and Edwards ended the night with the 9.925 and win.

LSU returns to the PMAC on Friday, March 11 against No. 4 Utah for the regular season finale. The meet will be the finale for LSU’s six seniors.
