Man attacks New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Lee Zeldin at campaign event

A 43-year-old man attacked New York Republican gubernatorial nominee Rep. Lee Zeldin at an upstate campaign event Thursday evening.

Zeldin was not harmed in the incident, which occurred as he was speaking outside a Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Fairport, a village near Rochester, NBC News reported.

Zeldin said he grabbed the attacker’s wrist and stopped him for a few moments before others tackled the man.

The attacker, identified by three senior law enforcement officials as David Jakubonis of Fairport, was subdued by members of the audience after he charged Zeldin, WHEC-TV reported.

That NBC affiliate reported that audience members disarmed the man, and put him in zip-ties that were pulled from campaign posters.

The suspect may have had some sort of bladed instrument, NBC News reported.

Zeldin, who represents a congressional district in Suffolk County, Long Island, is campaigning to unseat Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat.

Hochul in a tweet wrote: “Relieved to hear that Congressman Zeldin was not injured and that the suspect is in custody.”

“I condemn this violent behavior in the strongest terms possible — it has no place in New York,” Hochul tweeted.

Hochul took office last year after Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned in disgrace following accusations of sexual harassment by nearly a dozen women.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Morgan Lee won the 1500 meters and the 5000 meters, Maya Verma captured the high jump and two others had second place finishes for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s track & field team, which placed third in the Liberty League Championship hosted by Vassar College. The University of Rochester won the team title with 230 points, followed by Ithaca College with 216 and the Engineers with 132.

Lee, a junior, ran the 1500 meters practically uncontested as she won with a time of 4:41.21, which was three minutes in front of the runner-up, Lindsay Scott of Ithaca, who crossed in 4:44.21. Jillian Lees, another Rensselaer junior, earned a fifth place finish with a time of 4:52.58.

In the 5000, Lee won by six minutes with a time of 17:44.36, easily outdistancing Ava Fowler of Ithaca, who finished second with a time of 15:50.74. RPI’s Nia Goddard, who won the 10000 meters on Friday by two minutes, came in third with a time of 17:55.72.

Also on the track, both the 4×100 relay team and the 4×400 squad had top 4 finishes. Elizabeth Evans, Kat Morin, Christine Mallette and Caitlin Smith combined for a 49.35 in the 4×1, while Fadyia Thompson, Evans, Mallette and Jordan Porter were fourth in the 4×4 with a 4:11.48. Individually, Morin was fifth in the 100. 

Verma, a senior, led the field events with her victory in the high jump, reaching 1.63 meters on her first attempt at that height. The runner-up, Eileen Bequette of Rochester, managed a 1.58-meter effort, but could not match Verma in three attempts.

The triple jump featured two Engineers in the top 4 with Emily Vallee placing second at 10.92 meters and Julia Hubbard coming in fourth at 10.59. Rochester’s Alyssa Hoogs won with a leap of 11.27 meters. 

Morgan Daley, who won the hammer on Friday, was second in the discus. She reached 37.35 on her fifth throw but could not out-do the 39.02 of St. Lawrence’s Kimberly Merchant.

And in the heptathlon, Maria Domingo was fifth overall with 3220 points.

A select number of team members will continue to compete in attempts to qualify for the NCAA Championship with the next opportunity coming on May 16 at Swarthmore.

Speaking at The Belfry, where he is competing in this week’s Betfred British Masters, the 49-year-old talked passionately about the threat of players being banned if they align themselves with new money-spinning series being fronted by Greg Norman.

Westwood had previously been reticent to chat about being linked with the $25 million events, the first of which is being held at the Centurion Club, near St Albans, but, while trying to be respectful about his workplace for the next four days, the former world No 1 clearly decided it was time to speak up.

“I’ve asked for a release from the PGA Tour and European Tour for the Centurion like many others have,” said Westwood as he joined Richard Bland, the defending Betfred British Masters champion, in confirming that.

“I’ve asked for releases for tournaments for as long as I’ve been on tour. It’s not the first release I’ve asked for. I’ve asked for many. Not heard anything back yet. Ball is in the European Tour’s court and the PGA Tour’s court for that matter.”

PGA Tour rules stipulate that the tour must decide whether to grant releases at least 30 days before the Centurion event, which would be 10 May. That is also the deadline for DP World Tour players to request releases.

“I don’t think it’s a case of fairness,” said Westwood, a British Masters winner by five shots at The Belfry in 2007, in reply to being asked if someone like him who’d been loyal to the DP World Tour over the years deserved to be facing a potential ban. “I think it’s a case of whichever authority is feeling whatever they do is right.

“I’ve supported the European Tour for 29 years. I’ve gone over and won on the PGA Tour in ’98, not taken my card. I’ve never been sort of driven by playing on the PGA Tour like a lot of the guys have. It’s been their kind of goal to get on to the PGA Tour. It never has for me.

“My goal has always been to be a European Tour member and support this tour and kind of go in and out of the PGA Tour. I’ve hosted events on this tour and obviously played wherever I can through Covid and stuff like that. I consider myself a European Tour member and I’ve always tried to support the European Tour as much as I can.”

Two other European Ryder Cup stalwarts, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter, have also been linked with the LIV Golf International Series, which comprises eight events this year, as have two past Open champions, Louis Oosthuizen and Phil Mickelson.

It is rumoured that the PGA Tour are set to grant releases for the Centurion event but will then take a different approach over tournaments on American soil thereafter that clash directly with ones on the US circuit.

“It’s being portrayed as us and them, whereas the people from LIV Golf, all the reports I’ve read, have said that they want to stand side-by-side and they are not going up against any of the really massive tournaments,” observed Westwood. “They kind of want everybody to be able to play, have options. They are not forcing anybody’s hand, so I believe.

“People always have a problem with change, don’t they? They are skeptical about it and people like, in whatever walk it is, they like continuity and they like just the same to carry on. Whereas change in competition are good in any walk of life, I think. It shakes things up and keeps everybody on their toes and keeps everybody trying to improve and improve their product.”

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Joe O’Connor (Henrico, Va. / Douglas Freeman) and sophomore Adam Roy (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) posted one win each on the second day of the 2022 ODAC Outdoor Championship, as the Washington and Lee men’s track & field team finished second.
 
Highlights from the meet:
 
-O’Connor’s win came in the pole vault at a mark of 4.85m (15’11.00″), and he also added a fourth-place finish in the 110m hurdles (15.65). Roy’s win came in the javelin (51.43m [[168’8″]).
 
-First-year Connor Lehman (Weston, Mass. / Weston) and sophomore Mark Waller (Mountain Brook, Ala. / Mountain Brook) came in next for the Generals with a second-place effort and personal record each. Lehman’s new high mark came in the javelin (49.24m [161’6″]) and Waller’s came in the 400m hurdles (55.57).
 
-First-year Jaylen Day (Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. / Harve de Grace), junior Doug Dracon (Matthews, N.C. / Weddington) and first-year Luke Avigliano (Madison, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) rounded out the Top 3 finishers for the Generals. Day placed third in the 110m hurdles (15.50), Dracon was third in the 400m (48.93) and Avigliano took third in the 800m (1:54.32).
