MID-CONTINENT PUBLIC LIBRARY EVENTS – The Examiner
The Mid-Continent Public Library is offering inperson and virtual events. Visit mymcpl.org/events for further information and additional events.
Events require advance registration unless otherwise stated. Go to www.mymcpl.org/events. You can then click on “All Events” at the top or on any of the special groups of events at the left side of the screen and can search for events. If you have questions as to how to register or attend an event, call 816-252-7228 and select the option for technology support.
If the event is a Zoom event, click on the event and register. An email invitation will be sent to you near the time of the event.
To attend most non-Zoom virtual events, register for the event and, near the time of the event, you will receive there will be a link to the library’s Facebook page MCPL360 (or you can navigate to https://www.facebook.com/mcpl360/ at the time the event is scheduled.)

• Famous Czech and Slovak American: An exhibit at the Midwest Genealogy Center, 3440 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence. The story of the Czechs and Slovaks who immigrated to the United States. Through May 31.
• Guts & Glory: The War Train that Shaped a Nation: An exhibit at the Midwest Genealogy Center, 3440 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence. The story of the Czech and Slovak legions that made a difficult trek across Siberia during World War I. Through May 31.
SATURDAY, APRIL 23
• Mad Science Presents Weather Wonders: 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., Blue Springs North Branch, 850 N.W. Hunter Drive. Wind, water and heat are the three components of weather. Learn the mysteries behind our weather patterns.
• Family Book Group: “The Legent of Rock Paper Scissors,” by Drew Daywalt: 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Blue Springs South branch, 2220 Missouri 7. Hear this story read aloud and then talk about the story.
• Mad Science Presents Butterflies: 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Colbern Road Branch, 1000 N.E. Colbern Road, Lee’s Summit. Learn how caterpillars change into butterflies, how butterflies eat and lots of other fun facts.

• We’ve Got Your Number: 4 to 4:30 p.m., Blue Ridge branch, 9253 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City. Jay and Leslie Cady use circus skills and humor to have fun with numbers. They will juggle and tell stories to explore numbers.
• The Life of Benjamin Franklin: 7 to 8:30 p.m., Blue Springs North branch, 850 N.W. Hunter Drive. A re-enactor will talk about Franklin and the major events of his life.

• Teen Book Group: “Shadow and Bone,” by Leigh Bardugo: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., South Independence branch, 13700 E. 35th St., Discussions of popular young-adult Titles. This month it is “Shadow and Bone,” recently adapted for Netflix. The book has themes of friendship, magic, and good versus evil.
• Basic Yoga: 7 to 8 p.m., Raytown branch, 6131 Raytown Road. Join this three-week restorative yoga class to learn basic poses and relaxation techniques. All levels welcome. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or a towel.
• Cancer Support for the Whole Family, the Whole Time (Zoom): 7 to 8 p.m. Approximately 1.9 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Learn the most common concerns of cancer patients and how to support the whole family. Program registration will close 30 minutes prior to the start of the program and registered participants will be emailed a Zoom access code 15 minutes before the program starts so you must provide an email address.

• How to Find an Owl in Your Neighborhood (Zoom): 7 to 8 p.m. Naturalist Mark H.X. Glenshaw, aka “The Owl Man,” helps you find owls in your neighborhood, whether in subdivisions, city neighborhoods, or parks. You must sign into the room prior to the start of the program, even though you will also have registered in advance.
