Museum and Archives of Vernon want everyone to get involved with Cultural Days events – Vernon News

Museum and Archives of Vernon want everyone to get involved with Cultural Days events - Vernon News

The Museum and Archives of Vernon will a hub of activity during Culture Days starting at the end of September.

“Our goal is to one day have everyone who comes to the museum see themselves represented in the some way,” says Laisha Rosnau, curator of visitor experience. “We can begin by providing meaningful opportunities for the community to connect with their own lived experiences.”

The museum will be participating in the Culture Days launch at Polson Park on Sept. 23 where residents are invited drop by to create a paper “quilt” square representative of their heritage.

The squares will then be connected with others to create a community quilt, symbolizing the value of each individual, each identity, and diverse experiences of heritage in the context of the larger collective.

Over the course of the following three weeks, the museum will be collaborating with various partners and inviting the community to be an active participant in the curation of specific exhibits.

In recognition of 2SLGBTQIA+ History Month in October, with funding from the UBC Okanagan Partnership Recognition and Exploration Fund, the Museum & Archives of Vernon, along with UBC Okanagan Library’s Special Collections and Archives, are seeking community involvement to uncover the rich history of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and communities in the North Okanagan.

Pride in Place: Historical Representation of 2SLGBTQIA+ Communities in the Okanagan will take place Oct. 6, inviting public discussions around the historical underrepresentation of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in collections and archives in the area.

The museum is currently seeking expressions of interest from potential contributors to help tell this story through objects, documents, photographs and audio/visual materials in their care.

To arrange to loan items to be included in this exhibit, contact Rosnau by email at [email protected] before Sept. 23.

Other events MAV is hosting throughout Culture Days include a workshop on genealogical research, and programming in honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. A full listing of the Museum’s Culture Days events is available online.

Participants are encouraged to register early as there is limited seating for most activities.

Living near the Langley airport, young Dhairya Agrawal has developed a powerful interest in aviation.

Mom Shubhangi says when her 19-month-old son hears an airplane passing overhead, he gets excited, which is only a problem when it’s nap time.

“He loves planes,” Shubangi said.

One of Hamilton’s most popular attractions is celebrating a milestone anniversary this summer and they’re celebrating with a really big event.

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (CWHM) is marking its 50th Anniversary later this month with a special two-day event that invites guests to get up close and personal with some of the museum’s aircraft and their crews.

The CWHM started out as a restoration project for a group of friends who were aviation enthusiasts back in 1972.

In its five decades, the museum has grown into an internationally renowned collection of 50 aircraft that were flown by Canadians and Canadian military services from the beginning of the Second World War to today.

To celebrate the ongoing legacy of Hamilton’s beloved museum, SkyFest50 will run from June 25 to June 26 and will feature fly-bys of the museum’s Firefly, Dakota, B-25 Mitchell, and Canso.

Aircraft like the Mosquito, Hurricane, Spitfire, P-51 Mustang, P-40 Warhawk, and P-39 Aircobra will also be making appearances at this year’s SkyFest.

The museum’s legendary Lancaster will be open for interior tours for the event but is currently undergoing some preventative maintenance to replace one of its engines so it won’t be taking to the skies for at least a few more weeks.

In addition to SkyFest50, the CWHM is hosting a homecoming event on June 18th for past and present members, staff and volunteers for a “casual afternoon of socializing and reminiscing.”

Tickets for SkyFest are currently on sale for the event, though a notice on the museum’s website said that tickets for Saturday (June 25) are already sold out.

A preview event is scheduled for Friday but there will be no access to the ramp.

Tickets for SkyFest50can be purchased through the museum’s website. So too can tickets for the homecoming event.

Langley flight museum pays tribute to Queen’s platinum jubilee – Aldergrove Star

Langley flight museum pays tribute to Queen’s platinum jubilee - Aldergrove Star

As members of the Royal Family tour Canada this week, news of a queen-inspired gift arrives in Langley.

As this year marks the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the federal government announced $2.14 million funding for community events and projects across the country – including an upcoming Canada Day celebration in Langley.

The Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley received $4,100 to host a family-oriented commemoration on July 1, one of many grants announced by Minister of Canadian Heritage Pablo Rodriguez.

“For more than 70 years, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has been a model of dedication and a privileged witness to the growth of and accomplishments of Canadians, and to the values that unite us,” Rodriguez said.

“That’s why I’m pleased to announce the funded projects that will allow Canadians across the country to learn more about our sovereign, celebrate this historic anniversary and reflect on the meaning of public service in today’s society.”

The federal government launched the tribute on Feb. 6, and will host numerous events including the Royal Tour, a national illumination initiative, exhibits, commemorative gardens, educational resources, and a commemorative stamp and coins.

There will be a total of 360 community events and three major national projects.

Funds for the flight museum will be utilized towards a display connecting the Crown to aviation in Canada, and how Queen Elizabeth has connected with Canadians, according to the museum website.

The theme of the Canada Day festivities and display will explore each of Queen’s visits to Canada, and the specific use of aircraft to complete each tour.

Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall kicked off the three-day royal tour Monday in St. John’s and are travelling to Canada’s Capital Region today (Wednesday, May 18), followed by Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories on Thursday.

Museum and Archives of Vernon holding special Earth Day activities April 23 – Vernon News

Museum and Archives of Vernon holding special Earth Day activities April 23 - Vernon News

Museum Earth Day event

Planet Earth is a popular topic at the Museum and Archives of Vernon.

With field trips almost fully booked for the upcoming Earth Expo, the museum is holding a special Earth Day Celebration April 23.

“We received so many incredible submissions for the exhibition, we want to ensure the public has an opportunity to come together and celebrate the creativity, innovation and imagination that is the Earth Expo,” said Amy Timleck, museum program co-ordinator.

“When we talk about climate crisis, it can feel really overwhelming, and what we see through the eyes of local youth is that there is, indeed, hope.”

The Earth Day Celebration will feature special events, including a visit from Kiki the Eco Elf.

Through wildly imaginative story-telling, multi-instrumental music and engaging, interactive games, Kiki the Eco Elf offers performances with a conscientious message.

The museum will also be partnering with the organizers of the Polson Night Market (PNM) for a special pop-up event.

“We’ve always said that we don’t want to be just another market,” said Mayla Janzen, PNM organizer and co-creator. “Having the opportunity to promote local creators, while also celebrating sustainability, felt really aligned with our vision for a unique marketplace.”

Earth Day at the Museum will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 23. Information about which activities during the day are free/paid/by donation are listed at the museum’s website.

Fort St. John North Peace Museum update: Back to more events and programs

Admission is free but donations are appreciated. Masks are recommended and attendance will be capped at the first 50 people to arrive. For more information, call 250-787-0430.

We were excited to host some programs and guided tours for camps over spring break and we have just released our program information to schools. Information on all our programs can be found at fsjmuseum.com.

Lastly, we are very happy to be updating our display case in the hospital lobby again with a brand new exhibit.

Access has been limited during the pandemic and we are thrilled to be teaming up with the Fort St. John Hospital Arts Committee once again. This new display looks at surgery in the North Peace from the 1930s to the 1970s through equipment, photographs, and stories. Look for it in the lobby between reception and Cool Beans Café.
