$80M sports and events center proposed in town of Watertown

$80M sports and events center proposed in town of Watertown

TOWN OF WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – A more than 500,000-square-foot sports and events center could be coming to Watertown.

Everything from basketball and volleyball to track and ice hockey. The proposed $80 million facility is aiming to be a major draw for sporting events in upstate New York.

Renderings are out for the Thousand Islands Event Center. Town of Watertown Supervisor Joel Bartlett is heading the project with the Thousand Islands Local Development Corporation along with other architects and developers.

It would be 520,000-square-feet, and include 8 basketball courts, an indoor track, 2 hockey rinks, and 16 volleyball courts. That goes along with 3 outdoor turf fields and 2 indoor fields for sports like lacrosse.

Plus, there would be a multi-purpose arena seating up to 9,000 people. The proposal also calls for two ice rinks with arena seating of up to 3,000 people.

This is a project that’s been talked about for years. What’s new now? The size of the project. It’s about 3 times the size of a 2018 plan both in scale of the facility, and cost.

The T.I.L.D.C. says there is no modern, large-scale sports and special events center in the Thousand Islands region, forcing families to drive hours to other facilities.

The facility would be on Route 3 in the town of Watertown by the agricultural business park. The goal is to attract people to Watertown from across upstate New York and Canada.

Fifty jobs would be created.

The projections call for 250 event days annually, bringing in more than 93,000 new visitors to the area. The T.I.L.D.C. believes that would generate about $24 million in additional spending from those visitors.

Where will the $80 million come from for the project? Officials say $35 million will be from taxable bonds, $15 million will come from private equity, and the T.I.L.D.C is trying to secure the remaining $30 million from the state.

We reached out to officials at the governor’s office, but they declined to comment on the project.

Supervisor Bartlett was not available for comment as well.

We’re still working to learn whether the T.I.L.D.C. will be able to secure that $30 million in state funding.

Pride Month Events Proposed for Beverly Hills

At the May 12 Arts and Culture Commission Special Liaison Meeting, staff presented Mayor Lili Bosse and and Councilmember John Mirisch with a proposal for the inaugural Beverly Hills Pride 2022 as part of the city and Human Relations Commission Embrace and Celebrate Culture Initiative. Pending City Council approval, the Arts and Culture and Human Relations Commissions would bring festive pride activities in early June to help kick off Pride Month in Beverly Hills. The proposal includes go between optics lighting on the side of City Hall, a celebratory tree lighting and two public performances: a concert event hosted by and in collaboration with the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts and an event at Greystone

Theatre with a gender diverse lineup of female-identified performers, musicians, and comedians. Last June, Beverly Hills honored Pride by lighting up City Hall with pride themed optics, making Beverly Hills Pride 2022 a natural progression in showing the city’s commitment to, and support for, embracing cultural diversity, equity, inclusion and providing greater visibility and recognition of LBGTA+ community members and visitors.

If approved, the first Beverly Hills Pride Night will be held on June 2. Beverly Hills would launch Pride Month in the region, followed by the city of West Hollywood’s WeHo Pride Weekend on June 3-5, and city of Los Angeles’s Pride festivities scheduled for June 10-12.

Gradfest society releases planning guidelines and proposed events following pushback from community

Gradfest society releases planning guidelines and proposed events following pushback from community

As a registered charity, the society says they are liable for the activities they organize and are required to follow all public health orders.

“We must keep the safety and interests of the students, volunteers and society a top priority and will be as inclusive as possible,” said the release.

The society says it will keep tabs on PHOs and make changes when needed and has reached out to Northern Health to ask about implementing special considerations and allowances for grad-related events.

The prom is being organized with the hopes that proof of vaccination won’t be needed, the society said.

The event is being proposed to take place at the curling rink on June 17th, and the society says the location allows them to adapt to a variety of health orders.

“Additionally, it ensures all volunteer time and preparations are not impacted by weather and security can be easily managed.”

If the prom event is not possible due to health orders, the society looks to plan an alternative that does meet the requirements.

The student prom committee is also providing input on many aspects associated with planning and will be sending surveys to graduating students for their input.

The Gradfest team also wants to clarify that the $80 grad fee is provided to the school to cover the graduation ceremony costs, which is not affiliated with the society.

“Our committee of volunteers is determined to do our best to ensure our grads have a variety of safe opportunities to enjoy and celebrate their achievement. We are hopeful that by June, the PHOs will be significantly reduced and we won’t face so many restrictions.”

The society’s letter to graduates and their parents can be viewed below:
