Henderson Historical Society sets summer events

Henderson Historical Society sets summer events

HENDERSON — The Henderson New York Historical Society is planning a variety of events this summer, including Henderson Heritage Day.

The 15th annual Henderson Heritage Day and juried craft show will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 13, when people can expect to attend a “party-picnic,” Elaine Scott, secretary of the Henderson Historical Society, said.

The day will officially begin at 8:45 a.m. with a ceremony at the society’s Arthur Rice Memorial Flag Pole. The ceremony will end at 9 a.m. when the old church bell will ring, signifying the start of the day.

Music will be provided by Tom “24” Ventiquattro from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Free raffles will be available throughout the day.

The historical society also has a boat annex, named the Peters-Stevens Boat Annex to honor the families that donated and helped “preserve the boating heritage of Henderson,” according to the society’s website.

“People get lost in the boat annex,” Ms. Scott said. “It starts with the ship building during the War of 1812, and goes into the great supply freighters that were built in Henderson Harbor … That’s a lot of fun over there.”

The historical society also offers a program called “Find a Grave,” which will be available to people during regular hours on July 20 and Aug. 17.

Syracuse writer Sheila Burns will be at the historical society on July 27 and Aug. 24.

At 3 p.m. both days, Ms. Burns will be leading a program titled “Write Your Story.”

“She did a writing program for us before COVID and people were so excited they said, ‘Please, have her come back again,’” Ms. Scott said. “She’s a lot of fun.”

The team at the Henderson Historical Society is all unpaid volunteers and Ms. Scott says that they are “totally committed.”

The historical society is open from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, and by appointment for researchers.

Fredonia sets Wall honors, year-end events

Chamber announces upcoming events

Fredonia Superintendent Dr. Bradley Zilliox has frequently discussed Fredonia Central School’s Wall of Honor year, with a desire to put more emphasis into it. In late March, Zilliox announced the two additions to the Wall of Honor would be Thomas Baressi, who was instrumental in the opening of the school’s elementary school on the main campus, and Lenny Vento, who served in the district for 37 years.

With those nominations in hand, a date for their addition to the Wall is now set. Baressi and Vento will be placed on the school’s Wall of Honor in a ceremony that will be prior to Fredonia’s next school board meeting on Tuesday, June 21. The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m., with the board meeting following at 6.

The Wall of Honor is located in the school’s auditorium/gymnasium hallway, and the ceremony will be held in the auditorium lobby. “We’re going to have a lot of family and friends on hand and we’ll have their plaques up joining a couple other former employees on the Wall of Honor,” Zilliox said. “We’ll say a few words and have a chance to share refreshments and mingle and it should be a very enjoyable evening.”

Fredonia High School Principal Darrin Paschke also gave an update on Fredonia’s year-end events, including Friday’s Senior Banquet at the Fredonia Beaver Club, which will be free for the students. Class Night is also that day at 7:45. The Class Clap Out parade will be on the last Friday before graduation, June 24, which will lead into graduation rehearsal, with graduation itself being Sunday, June 26, at the SUNY Fredonia King Concert Hall.

The district additionally accepted the retirements of teacher aides Sharon Krzal, who served the district for 28 years, JoAnne Ryan, who served for 15 years, and Virginia Harper, who was there for six years. The board also accepted John Elliot’s retirement, who was in the district for 13 years.

Fredonia then welcomed Michelle Dawley, who was in person at Tuesday’s meeting, and was introduced as a business teacher. She’s approved to teach several Jamestown Community College courses, which Zilliox noted as difficult to find. Dawley, who lives in Silver Creek, said that she’s excited to bring her 16 years of experience to the school.

“This will be a very easy transition for me to come here,” said Dawley. “I’m really excited to be here.”

Halton sets two virtual events for public input on growth management strategy

Halton sets two virtual events for public input on growth management strategy

Halton Region has announced two virtual events to both inform the public and gain input on the region’s growth management strategy. Both events will review and discuss Halton’s proposed amendment to the Regional Official Plan: “ROPA 49: An Amendment to Implement the Integrated Growth Management Strategy.”

The purpose of proposed Regional Official Plan Amendment 49 (ROPA 49), according to regional staff, “is to help define where and how Halton will grow.” This newly proposed ROPA 49 applies to all lands in the Regional Municipality of Halton, including the town of Oakville.

One of the events will be an “open house” to ask questions and review the amendment. The second event will be a statutory public meeting, which is more formal and allows residents to give direct comments to Halton Regional Council about the amendment. Both scheduled events are virtual.

The virtual events are scheduled as follows:

  • The Open House will take place on Wednesday April 6, 2022 at 7 p.m.
  • The Statutory Public Meeting will be one week later on Wednesday April 13, 2022 at 9:30 a.m.

Both events will be held over Zoom. Meeting IDs and passcodes have been released publicly and are available at the bottom of this story.

“Halton Region,” they begin in a public notice, “is holding a Public Open House and a Statutory Public Meeting in connection with Draft Regional Official Plan Amendment No. 49 (ROPA 49). ROPA 49 is proposed as a component of Halton’s Regional Official Plan Review and municipal comprehensive review process pursuant to the Provincial Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe and Section 26 of the Planning Act, as amended.”

This is the second Amendment to be considered by Regional Council as part of the Regional Official Plan Review (ROPR) and Halton says it “builds on the Regional Urban Structure defined by ROPA 48.”

“It proposes,” they continue, “to implement the results of the Integrated Growth Management Strategy and Regional Council’s direction to accommodate population and employment growth within Halton’s existing Regional Urban Boundary to 2041 and to develop a framework for planning for growth from 2041 to 2051.”

ROPA 49 also proposes changes that support Halton’s growth strategy, including updates to:

  • Policies and mapping related to Settlement Area boundaries
  • The Regional Urban Structure
  • Strategic Growth Areas and Employment Areas
  • Forecasts and targets for population and employment growth, intensification, density and phasing

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EVENTS

Questions can be submitted in advance for the open house by emailing [email protected] or calling 311. Attendees are asked to “please check halton.ca/ropr closer to the meeting to download a copy of the presentation and follow along.”

Advance registration is being “strongly encouraged” for those who wish to make a verbal presentation during the statutory meeting. Halton says that, to preserve the integrity of the meeting, “anonymous or offensive Zoom account names will not be allowed to speak.”

Halton Region says they are “not responsible for unstable internet connections that may impact your ability to provide your comments. Participants who are disruptive or who speak on a subject other than the stated purpose of the meeting may be removed from the meeting without warning.”

To join or attend either event, there are two ways to do so:

  • Online: On the date of the event, visit halton.ca/ropr.
  • By phone: Call 1-855-703-8985 (toll-free) or 1-647-374-4685 and use the Meeting ID and Passcode above.

For the statutory public meeting on April 13, the Meeting ID is: 999 8275 2781. The Passcode is: 624381 (if requested.)

If you wish to be notified of the decision of Halton Region on the proposed Amendment, you must make a written request to the Regional Clerk.

For more information about this event, you can read the full details in Halton’s public notice online.

Aggies Win Five Events, Distin Sets NCAA-Leading Mark – Texas A&M Athletics – 12thMan.com

Aggies Win Five Events, Distin Sets NCAA-Leading Mark - Texas A&M Athletics - 12thMan.com

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Texas A&M track & field’s Lamara Distin highlighted day one of the Don Kirby Invitational winning the high jump with an NCAA-leading clearance of 6-3.5/1.92m, while four other Aggies claimed event titles inside the Albuquerque Convention Center Friday night.

Distin cleared heights of 5-10/1.78m, 6-0/1.83m, 6-1.25/1.86m and 6-2.25/1.89m before soaring over 6-3.5/1.92m to claim the event title. The clearance bettered her previous NCAA-leading height of 6-2/1.88m and makes her the second best indoor performer in Aggie history. A Hanover, Jamaica, native, Distin broke a 46-year old national indoor record of 6-2.75/1.90m previously held by Maresa Cadienhead. The sophomore recorded the second best performance in school history.

Deborah Acquah won the women’s long jump with a series best leap of 21-8.25/6.61m, nearly a foot farther than Nike professional Rhesa Foster’s mark of 20-10.5/6.36m. The jump registers as the sixth best performance in Aggie history. Acquah, a senior, now owns three of the top six performances Texas A&M history.

Sprinters claiming titles on the track include Lance Broome (200m), Keanu Jones (unseeded 200m) and Laila Owens (200m). Jones, running in the unseeded men’s 200m, clocked the fastest overall time of 21.16. The freshman from Brenham bettered his previous best by four-tenths of a second. Broome followed winning the seeded men’s 200m at a time of 20.62. The junior registered a personal best time while becoming the sixth best performer in school history. Owens continued her unbeaten streak winning the seeded women’s 200m with an all-time best at 23.00. The win marked the fifth victory in individual races and eighth including relays. The sophomore bettered her previous best by .21 seconds to become the eighth fastest Aggie all-time.

Fellow sprinters Devon Achane, Ryan Martin, Sydnee Stewart and Emmanuel Yeboah each registered personal bests in their respective 200m races. Achane placed second behind Broome at a time of 20.98, while Martin ran 21.17 and Yeboah 21.26. Stewart clocked 24.53 in the women’s race.

Other notable performances include Luke Barrett finishing with a personal best in the weight throw at 58-3.75/17.77m to become the 10th best Aggie all-time and Connor Gregston setting a personal best in men’s pole vault at 16-10/5.13m, the third week to do so.

Gemma Goddard and Brady Grant highlighted the distance crew at the Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee. Grant ran a personal best 5000m time of 14:29.69 to become the 10th best performer in school history, while Goddard clocked a personal best mile at 4:51.27 to become the 11th best Aggie performer all-time.

Day two of the Don Kirby Invitational continues Saturday at 10:30 a.m. CT with field events, while track events begin at 11:40 a.m. The Music City Challenge begins for the Aggies with Mikenna Robinson in the unseeded women’s 800m at 10 a.m. CT.
