After a two-year absence, Diner en Blanc is returning somewhere in Greater Victoria.

The special event sees a French, pop-up picnic held at a secret location each year, providing a unique dining opportunity for those lucky enough to secure a spot.

In 2019, more than 800 people dressed head to toe in white, per tradition, gathered at the Victoria harbourfront for the meal.

This year’s event, organized again by Brink Events, is scheduled for June 23 with catering provided by Truffles Catering.

While much about the event has yet to be unveiled, media were invited to a special sneak peek Thursday (May 12), revealing a tasty assortment of sandwiches, macarons and various healthy snacks in the boxed picnic lunches.

Registration for an invite is done in three phases, with those who attended previous events being invited to RSVP now. Starting on May 16, friends of those invited in the first phase will receive their invites, and on May 19 new guests who put their name on a wait list will begin receiving their invites.

For more information on the event and how to get a hold of an invite, visit victoria.dinerenblanc.com.

Astronomy day events in Greater Victoria to launch a summer of star parties – Saanich News

Astronomy day events in Greater Victoria to launch a summer of star parties - Saanich News

Greater Victoria residents have an opportunity to learn about space and take in its spectacular views for the first time in two years this May 7 as International Astronomy Day activities make their return.

The Victoria Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada is hosting a full day and evening of events at the Royal B.C. Museum and Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Saanich.

“This is the biggest astronomy outreach event in Canada, and we have really been missing it,” Victoria Centre president Randy Enkin said of the day’s significance. “There is a real hunger and interest for learning about the skies and things like the new James Webb telescope.”

The day kicks off at 10 a.m. just outside the RBCM, where volunteers will be making solar telescopes available for safe viewing of the sun. Inside the museum’s Clifford Carl Hall there will be astrophotography and history displays, hands-on activities for children and a series of lectures by society members and University of Victoria researchers.

The astronomy events at the museum are free of charge and run until 3 p.m., however, regular admission fees apply to the rest of the museum.

From 7:30 to 11 p.m., the Friends of Dominion Astrophysical Observatory will be hosting a lecture by Chris Gainor on the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes, as well as tours of the observatory and – weather permitting – views of the night sky through various telescopes on site.

“To be a good citizen of the world, it’s important to not just know the facts of science, but also the methods,” said Enkin. “We ask the questions, we develop methods to answer them, and we usually make our lives better for it. We use the methods of science to make our lives better. Astronomy is just one example.”

Due to COVID protocols, only 100 people will be able to attend events at the observatory, and free admission tickets must be obtained online ahead of the event.

While admission is limited, Enkin said those who miss out on a spot shouldn’t worry too much. The event is just the beginning of what is expected to be a summer full of “star parties” at the observatory.

They are planned for every two weeks until July, and will be expanded to weekly events from July on should everything go to plan.

Victoria Beer Week returns with Friday untapping – Victoria News

Victoria Beer Week returns with Friday untapping - Victoria News

After a two-year hiatus, Victoria’s Beer Week got hopping on Friday night.

One organizer poured his excitement into two words at Beer Week’s April 1 kickoff event, at the Powerhouse (2110 Store St.) in Victoria.

“We’re back,” said Ryan Malcolm, a director with Victoria Beer Society.

The first pandemic shutdown hit right in the middle of the Society’s last Beer Week, in 2020.

“We’re so excited to be back,” Malcolm said. “Bringing Beer Week back after a two-year hiatus, it feels like we can close that chapter and start fresh.”

The suds-centred festivities will include some old favourites and new twists, but overall the week includes 18 events over nine days. An event called Touchdown, also at Powerhouse, will toast the end of the week with music, games and brewery awards on April 9.

One of the aspects Malcolm is eager about is Dubbel Down – a night filled with Belgian beers and food at the Victoria Public Market on April 9.

Also included in Beer Week is a host of “Beer School” events throughout the week that will see attendees learn about the origin of what ends up in their glass, get a holistic view of hops or settle in for some beer samplings.

More information can be found on Beer Week’s website (https://bit.ly/3LwAE84).

Victoria Pride Parade, fan-favourite events returning this summer after COVID hiatus

Victoria Pride Parade, fan-favourite events returning this summer after COVID hiatus

Local Victoria residents can expect an event-filled summer as life around the Capital Regional District begins to return to pre-pandemic normality.

Several iconic events on the Victoria calendar have confirmed it will be returning in 2022, including the Victoria Pride Parade.

On Thursday, the City of Victoria announced that it was investing $321,200 as part of the Festival Investment Grant into 41 different festivals in 2022 including staples such as Victoria Pride Week.

In addition, the city will be investing up to $129,500 of in-kind contributions to usher in the return to festival season in Victoria following the cancellations caused by COVID-19.

“Grab your sun hat and festival chair, after the long pandemic hiatus it’s going to be a great summer for arts and culture events in Victoria,” said Mayor Lisa Helps. “I am thrilled to see the exciting lineup of culturally-diverse, family-friendly events, from dance and theatre to music and community performances. There is something new to attend every week.”

According to the City, Victoria Pride Week will be back in full swing with a week of events, including a full Pride Parade and Festival in MacDonald Park on June 26.

In addition to Pride Week, residents can expect to see other local favourites including Symphony in the Summer, Fern Fest, the 159th Highland Games & Celtic Festival.

“The Festival Investment Grant program, now in its 24th year, has seen more than $3 million in grants go to nurture the development and sustainability of high-quality annual festivals and celebrations,” reads a statement from the City of Victoria. “The pursuit of arts, culture and tourism opportunities is a key goal of the City’s Create Victoria Arts and Culture Master Plan.”

An online “City Vibe” guide will also be published in May and will feature a complete list of upcoming family-friendly events festivals around the city.

A full schedule of all the events being held in Victoria during 2022 can be found online here.
