Atlanta History Center’s September events lineup announced

ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) – The Atlanta History Center has announced its full slate of events for September 2022. It’s headlined by an Author Talks event with photographer Tabitha Soren. Other Author Talks include Bill Browder and history author Jonathan Darman. There are plenty of events for school-age children as well.

Toddler Storytime: Falling for Fall

  • WHAT: The monthly program for young toddlers returns in September with a fall focus. The event will once again include arts and crafts projects and story time. Tickets begin at $8 for children ages six and up and $15 for adults. Children from ages one to five and museum members can get in free.

  • WHEN: Sept. 7, 10 a.m.

Author Talks: Jonathan Darman

  • WHAT: History author Jonathan Darman will join Author Talks to discuss his book Becoming FDR: The Personal Crisis that Made a President. The book chronicles how Roosevelt’s battles with polio helped create the man as he is seen in popular memory. The former Newsweek correspondent also wrote Landslide: LBJ and Ronald Reagan at the Dawn of a New America.

  • WHEN: Sept. 8, 7 p.m.

Homeschool Day: If These Walls Could Talk

  • WHAT: This month’s Homeschool Days event focuses on how history can be learned by visiting the places where it happened. Visitors will learn how history can be examined by visiting spaces and examining objects that the people of the past lived in and used. Tickets are $9 for children four and up and $15 for adults. Members and children under three are free.
  • WHERE: Atlanta History Center
  • WHEN: Sept. 15, 10 a.m.

Author Talks: Tabitha Soren

  • WHAT: The former MTV News, ABC News, and NBC News reporter will stop by Author Talks to discuss her project Surface Tension. She uses an iPad screen and an 8×10 film camera to capture images. Tickets for the event are $5 for members and $10 for non-members.
  • WHERE: Kennedy Theater
  • WHEN: Sept. 15, 7 p.m.

Author Talks: Bill Browder

  • WHAT: Author Bill Browder will discuss his book Freezing Order: A True Story of Money Laundering, Murder, and Surviving Vladimir Putin’s Wrath. Browder was one of Russia’s largest foreign investors until it all fell apart; his lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was murdered over his attempts to uncover a $230 million tax refund scheme and Browder decided to follow the money. It led right to Vladimir Putin. Tickets are $5 for members and $10 for non-members.

Poland proposes formation of international commission to probe events in Ukraine’s Bucha

Amid the ongoing brutal war between Russia and Ukraine, Poland has proposed to create a special international commission to investigate the events in Ukraine’s Bucha. In a series of tweets, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki accused Russia of committing genocide in several Ukrainian cities. “Bucha, Irpin, Hostomel and Motyzhyn are the places we will remember. The Russians committed the crime of genocide. It must be properly documented and judged. Therefore, I am calling to establish an international commission composed of specialists,” Morawiecki stated in one of the Twitter posts. 

The Polish Prime Minister also called on European Union (EU) and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) leaders to act decisively and implement actions to break Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war machine, confiscate the assets of the Russian Federation and the oligarchs deposited in the banks of Europe, and to break Russia’s aggressive policy. Motyzhyn also claimed that stopping Putin’s war machine depends on sanctions. “Today we are witnessing the creation of a genocide map of the 21st century, and the conclusion is that Russia is already a totalitarian, fascist state, which we must stop together within NATO and the EU,” he added in another tweet. 

 

Poland’s PM slams Germany for not imposing tougher sanctions on Russia

Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Morawiecki also blamed Germany for failing to impose tougher sanctions on Russia for its unjustified invasion of Ukraine. He also hailed Hungary for being supportive of new measures despite Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s friendly attitude towards Russia. “It’s Germany that is the main roadblock on sanctions,” Morawiecki added, as per The Kyiv Independent. Notably, several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia and the European Union, have imposed numerous sanctions on Russia. 

Poland’s PM vows to stop importing Russian oil by the end of 2022

Last week, Poland’s PM Morawiecki announced that his country will take steps to stop importing Russian oil by the end of 2022. Addressing a press conference, he claimed that Poland was launching the most ambitious plan among European states to disentangle itself from Russian energy sources. He also stated that Poland’s reliance on Russian oil has decreased significantly. According to Morawiecki, Russian President Putin used gas and oil as a “tool of blackmail.” Poland’s Prime Minister further claimed that money from oil and gas exports is funding Russia’s war activities, which need to be stopped, The Associated Press (AP) reported.

Russia-Ukraine War: Timeline Of Events As Conflict Nears One-Month Mark

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is approaching the one month mark. Tensions came to a boiling pot on February 21 when Vladimir Putin formally recognised the independence of two pro-Russia regions (Donetsk and Luhansk) in Ukraine.

Here is a one month timeline of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

  1. On February 24 Vladimir Putin in a televised address announces a special military campaign against Ukraine. The Russian President has for a long time been against Ukraine’s close ties with the west and reports of its possible inclusion into NATO. On this pretext Putin invades the Eastern European nation with the aim of “demilitarization and denazification”.

  2. On the same day blasts are heard in several parts of Ukraine, including Kyiv, Kharkiv and Mariupol. A Russian warship attacks Snake Island with Ukrainian Soldiers bravely refusing to surrender. The historic and inactive Chernobyl Nuclear Plant is captured by Russian forces.

  3. On February 25 Russian troops march towards the Ukrainian Capital, while Russia vetoes a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding its withdrawal from Ukraine. On the next day Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Zelensky refuses a United States offer to evacuate him and his family from the country.

  4. On February 28 The first round of talks occur between Ukraine and Russian officials on the border of Belarus and Ukraine but disband after no agreement could be reached.

  5. On March 1, Satellite images show a 40-mile convoy of Russian tanks and troops outside the capital city of Kyiv. Naveen Shekharappa an Indian medical student studying in Kharkiv loses his life due to Russian shelling.

  6. On March 2, The United Nations General Assembly passes a non-binding resolution condemning Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and demanding a complete withdrawal. Both India and China abstain from voting.

  7. On March 8, The United States of America imposes a complete ban on all imports of Russian energy with several global brands like McDonalds, Visa, MasterCard, Starbucks suspending their operations in Russia.

  8. On March 11, Russia calls for a ceasefire so that civilians may leave the cities of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mariupol, Chernihiv and Sumy. Ukraine and the West however accuse Russia of not honouring the ceasefire agreement.

  9. On March 15, The Prime Ministers of Czech Republic, Poland and Slovenia travel to Kyiv to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky also states that NATO is not a good option for Ukraine. In the ln the following days, President Joe Biden labels Vladimir Putin as a War Criminal. The International Court of Justice at The Hague as well orders Russia to suspend its invasion of Ukraine, which the country refuses to comply with.

  10. In the last week the United Nations has come out with a report stating 10 million people – more than a quarter of the population of Ukraine have been displaced. Volodymyr Zelensky also addresses the United States Congress and urges them to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine to prevent Russian Bombardment of their cities.

Last week Battlefield 2042 developers DICE first offered, then pulled, a limited-release skin that featured a smiling attack helicopter for the game’s Russian faction, deciding that now was not the best time to be giving players such rewards.

For a while now, the beleaguered online shooter has been offering special rewards for players who can complete certain weekly challenges, sometimes in the guise of Specialist outfits, sometimes skins for weapons and vehicles. The skin in question last week, called the “Grin Reaper”, featured an aggressive smile based on the iconic “shark tooth” custom of aircraft art that dates back to the First World War. It went live then, with events in Ukraine rapidly deteriorating, was swiftly withdrawn:

It was the right move on the part of developers DICE for anyone looking at this skin in isolation, but it also creates a strange precedent where this particular item was seen to be in poor taste, but the remainder of the game itself—which features an aggressive, near-future Russia as one of only two factions that players have a 50/50 chance of being automatically assigned to before each match—is fine.

The removed skin hasn’t been replaced; anyone booting up the game will see a blank area of the screen where a player’s progress towards the current weekly reward would normally be. DICE says “weekly missions will return” later this week, and haven’t ruled out this skin being re-offered at a later date.

This is somehow the third time Battlefield 2042’s skins have made the news since the game’s launch. First there was a skin that directly referenced Russia’s annexation of parts of Ukraine back in 2014, specifically the “Little Green Men”, unmarked Russian special forces units who “allowed Vladimir Putin to briefly claim that they were actually local insurgents, and as such that it wasn’t a clear and overt annexation of foreign territory.”

Then at Christmas some Gamers got mad that a holiday skin was going to feature Santa Claus carrying an assault rifle, then other Gamers got mad that DICE yanked the skin after blowback. The entire thing was very sad.

New Delhi: After Russian troops launched a wide-ranging attack on Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin on Thursday said the move was not directed to “infringe on the interests” of Kyiv and Ukrainian people. “The current events have nothing to do with a desire to infringe on the interests of Ukraine and Ukrainian people. “People living in territories which are part of today’s Ukraine were not asked how they want to build their lives when the USSR was created or after World War II people living in today’s Ukraine, anyone who want to do this, must be able to enjoy this right to make a free choice,” Putin said. Russian troops attacked Ukraine on Thursday, as President Vladimir Putin cast aside international condemnation and sanctions and warned other countries that any attempt to interfere would lead to “consequences you have never seen.”

Ukrainian border guards released footage of what they said were Russian military vehicles moving in, and big explosions were heard in the capital Kyiv, Kharkiv in the east and Odesa in the west. As the Russian military claimed to have wiped out Ukraine’s entire air defenses in a matter of hours, Ukrainians fled some cities and European authorities declared Ukrainian air space an active conflict zone.

World leaders decried the start of a long-anticipated invasion with far-reaching consequences, as global financial markets plunged and oil prices soared. Russia’s actions could cause massive casualties, topple Ukraine’s democratically elected government and upend geopolitics and Europe’s post-Cold War security balance.
