Several fun events planned in Hartford this weekend

HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – If you are looking for something fun to do this weekend, a lot of great events are happening in the capital city.

“We’re going to Connecticon,” said Harley Bison of Uxbridge, Massachusetts.

Harley and Katrina are from Massachusetts and are thrilled to be spending this summer weekend in Hartford.

They’re attending Connecticon at the Connecticut Convention Center.

“We’re super excited. It’s just really good to be out and see everybody, meet people who share the same interests,” said Harley.

The pop-culture convention brings thousands to Hartford each year.

“It’s basically just a big nerd convention with like games, anime, so much cool stuff,” said Katrina Belocas.

Not far from connecticon you’ll find a food lover’s paradise.

A food truck festival is taking place at the Riverfront Plaza with everything from smoothies, to french fries, and live entertainment.

The food truck festival will continue today and tomorrow Saturday July 16th from 11am to 8pm.

Over at Bushnell park, the 31st annual Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz is taking place now through Sunday.

40 to 50-thousand people are expected at the largest free jazz festival in all of New England.

“This is just a great example of the energy and the vibrancy that has come back to the city and it’s a beautiful thing to see and even better is that its going to be weekend after weekend,” said Mayor Luke bronin.

Over at Dunkin Donuts Park, it is Whalers alumni weekend as the Hartford Yard Goats prepare to take on the Harrisburg Senators.

WNBA commissioner blames gun violence for lack of outdoor fan events during All-Star weekend

WNBA commissioner blames gun violence for lack of outdoor fan events during All-Star weekend

All weekend, the WNBA’s All-Stars talked about how the 18th annual game felt different. They described a higher level of attention surrounding the event, better player-thrown parties and an overall feeling of being treated like All-Stars.

Severely lacking, though, were planned fan activities and even the ability to purchase tickets to events such as the skills competition and three-point contest, which were held at McCormick Place, not Wintrust Arena. One event specifically, a concert thrown by Chance the Rapper, seemed like a great opportunity to engage Chicago fans.

But WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert didn’t see it that way.

“We would have loved to have opened that up to the public,” she said Sunday. “Because of security concerns dating way back to Mandalay Bay, dating back to other things that have happened here in Chicago, Uvalde and Buffalo, there’s a lot of concern about outdoor events right now unfortunately in our country. So we were just trying to do the best we could.”

Meanwhile, the Taste of Chicago was taking place less than two miles from McCormick Place, where the WNBA’s limited outdoor events were being held.

The general public was unable to attend most major All-Star events outside of the game Sunday. Nike Nationals participants, their families, All-Star players’ families and friends and select Sky season-ticket holders were able to secure tickets to the skills and three-point competitions Saturday. Youth players, corporate partners and players were admitted into the Chance the Rapper concert.

Despite Engelbert expressing concerns about outdoor events, the league’s lone event open to the public, WNBA Live, was held outdoors. The league had been planning the All-Star Game in Chicago since last fall. Engelbert said consultations with security experts, including the Chicago Police Department, led to the league’s decision to limit fan attendance.

Wintrust Arena wasn’t available to the WNBA on Saturday because of a Pampered Chef event, which is a better explanation as to why there were so few fan activities.

“Cobbling together everything that’s going on, coming off two tough COVID years and not having Wintrust available yesterday, it just wasn’t possible to have a fan event,” Engelbert said. “We didn’t have an arena to have it in here in the city of Chicago.”

Championship feelings

The All-Star Game at Wintrust Arena was played in front of a near sold-out crowd of 9,572. Last year during the WNBA Finals, the arena was at maximum capacity with 10,897.

Sky players weren’t on the same team in the game. Kahleah Copper and Emma Meesseman played for Team Stewart, coached by the Sky’s, James Wade, and Candace Parker and Courtney Vandersloot played for the victorious Team Wilson, coached by the Aces’ Becky Hammon.

“Just had Finals feels all over again,” Copper said. “I think the atmosphere was incredible. Especially when Chicago Sky players were being announced. It just felt so amazing to be a part of something so special.”

Copper added that the only thing that will help ease the pain of losing to her teammates is winning another championship.

Changes coming

Engelbert opened her news conference announcing changes on the horizon for the WNBA, beginning with chartered flights for both teams in the WNBA Finals this year and a 50% increase to the postseason bonus pool.

Also, the regular-season schedule will expand from 36 games to 40 next year, and two teams will be added by 2025.

“I’d say probably 10 or 15 cities are very interested in hosting a WNBA team,” Engelbert said. “We’re meeting here and there, I’ll call it with interested ownership groups. We’re looking for the right ownership groups with the right commitment, the right arena situation, the right city to support a WNBA franchise.”

Thousands expected for Street Machine Weekend in Lethbridge

Thousands expected for Street Machine Weekend in Lethbridge

Engines will be revving and cars shined up for the return of Street Machine Weekend in Lethbridge, put on by the Street Wheelers Car Club.

“We’re feeling pretty good,” said Alex Dewar, the club’s president.  “I think we’ve done enough planning throughout the course of a year because it does take a full group effort with the club to get everything done.”

Now in its 44th year, organizers said  the event has become a staple in southern Alberta, with many coming from outside of the city to take in the action.

“We hope to max out around 600 cars roughly in (Galt Gardens on Sunday) that are actually participating in the show. I mean, overall for the weekend, tens of thousands of people tend to come in from all over and, you know, with the restrictions eased up a little bit we can have some of our U.S. friends come up,” Dewar said.

With several thousand spectators and car enthusiasts expected to visit Lethbridge over the four day event, Economic Development Lethbridge CEO Trevor Lewington said these types of events are a great opportunity to help boost the local economy.

“All of these visitors are hopefully going to restaurants while they’re here, they might be staying in a hotel, that incremental dollars into local businesses that then gets recycled into economic activity,” Lewington said. “So, any event that can happen in our city, any time that we can host people and more importantly attract people from outside the city in to bring their wallets, we think that’s a good thing.”

Lewington said having a variety of events back to the city allows a wide range of people to visit.

“If the average family comes to the city and they get a hotel room, have a couple of meals, maybe go to a movie or spend some money in a store, that’s $200 or $300. So, if you get a couple of thousands people out to an event, that’s hundreds of thousands of dollars into local businesses that didn’t have before the event came to the city,” Lewington added.

AMERICAN GRAFFITI SCREENING

The annual event will feature a drive-in screening of American Graffiti on Thursday evening at Exhibition Park. On Friday, cars hit the streets and spectators will line the sidewalks of Mayor Magrath Dr. South and Third Avenue South for the unsanctioned cruise. The club will be bringing its 100-foot dash at the Rocky Mountain Turf Club back and to close out the weekend, the well-known show and shine will take over Galt Gardens throughout Sunday.

“Southern Alberta is such a big car community and we want to try and promote safe and effective events, that’s our main goal throughout the weekend and we want everyone to have fun and stay safe,” Dewar said.

The Lethbridge Police Service is also stepping up its enforcement action this week to ensure those taking part in the activities remain safe.

“The traffic is quite congested all weekend and we expect that,” said Acting Sgt. Brent Paxman with the traffic response unit. “A lot of people come from out of town, it’s a big attraction to the city, which is a good thing. We’re just asking that drivers obey the traffic laws, be courteous to each and the spectators and have a fun, safe weekend.”

Officers will be getting assistance from Alberta Sheriffs throughout the weekend, with a focus on Friday’s cruise.

“What we’re looking for this weekend is any type of major traffic violation, stunting, racing, stuff like that,” Paxman said. “That we are going to be cracking down on – that’s not something we will allow on our streets because they are open to the public and there is a lot of spectators around.”

In 2021, 158 violation tickets were handed out over the course of the weekend.

Dewar said everyone is invited to come out this weekend and enjoy a Lethbridge-favourite event.

“Whether you have a car, SUV, or just want to watch the cars cruise, we encourage anyone and everyone to come out to all the activities happening throughout the weekend,” he said.

If you’re hoping to attend the festivities, Dewar said to check the club’s social media pages for up-to-date information.

Street Machine Weekend runs until July 10.

Deja Brew Cafe & Pub in Wendell hosts weekend events ahead of planned reopening

Deja Brew Cafe & Pub in Wendell hosts weekend events ahead of planned reopening

WENDELL — As Deja Brew Cafe & Pub looks to reopen later this summer, the business welcomed residents on Saturday for an Independence Day event, attracting those looking to hear reggae music while enjoying barbecued food and good company.

While the event was held on the holiday weekend, organizer Vic Scutari was quick to note that people in town are not feeling very patriotic in light of recent world events, and the celebration was not specifically for the holiday.

“We’ve lived in Wendell for 25 years. I always want to support Deja Brew, especially as they reopen,” attendee Brian Jones said as to why he came to the event. “It’s a nice place to come and see neighbors.”

Deja Brew, located on Lockes Village Road, closed in 2017, but has plans to reopen later this summer.

“These events we’ve been doing have been making me hopeful about reopening,” Scutari said. “The excitement and support has been palpable.”

In the meantime, before it opens, Deja Brew has hosted irregular events throughout the summer. Aside from the July 2 party, the business hosted the Wendell Misfit Prom on June 18 and will host Reggae Fest on July 16. Tickets for that event can be found on Facebook and are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

At Saturday’s event, The Roots All Stars played for the audience. This reggae band is a mix of local young musicians and seasoned reggae artists. African drums player Boo Pearson, formerly in the band Loose Caboose, played alongside Simon White.

Donna Horn, Wendell resident and attendee, said, “I love Simon. I’ve known him since he was 2. It’s a family thing to see him play here.”

White explained Loose Caboose paved the way for other reggae musicians in Wendell, allowing there to be space for a hometown genre.

Pearson, happy to be playing at Deja Brew, said, “I love playing our music, but it gets better when we play with other musicians and create a proverbial exchange.”

As DJ Vibe Wise started the night off by playing recorded music, Colin Wilson and Tiffany Raymond, residents of Florence, made their way to the event.

“It’s our first time here,” Raymond said. “We’ve been thinking about coming here for a while. We are excited about the music and food.”
