Wrestling events permit southeast of Sundre upheld on appeal

Wrestling events permit southeast of Sundre upheld on appeal

Mountain View County building, previously used in the processing of hay, can hold monthly wrestling events, decides subdivision and development appeal board

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY – The county’s subdivision and development appeal board (SDAB) has upheld an appeal and overturned an earlier rejection of an application for a development permit to allow monthly wrestling events on a property near the Harmattan Gas Plant southeast of Sundre of Highway 22.

In May the county’s municipal planning commission rejected a business, agri-tourism – one event per month application by Tomco Enterprise Ltd. for the 13-acre property at SW 26-31-4-5 in Division 4 in May.

The original application was to use an existing building, previously used in the processing of hay, for the monthly event. Events could include wrestling shows, car shows, horses pulls and tractor pulls, according to the original development permit application.

At the May 5 municipal planning commission meeting, commission members discussed the application procedure and public safety obligations with regard to the nearby AltaGas facility, including a proposed condition that reads: “The applicant, landowner and/or operator shall work with the Harmattan Gas Plant to incorporate the development approved with this development permit in their emergency response plan and submit confirmation to the county.”

The commission said it was not satisfied with the recommended condition and required a more formalized emergency response plan response prior to the application.

Appellent Tom Mennear appealed the decision, with the appeal hearing held on June 9. He told the board that he has spoken to officials at the gas plant about the proposed building use and says they are in support.

In its ruling issued June 15, the board upheld the appeal on four reasons (quoted from the decision):

• The board determined that the appellant has taken appropriate measures, combined with additional conditions on the development permit approval, to mitigate the concerns raised by AltaGas and therefore has deemed that the proposed development is a suitable use for the lands and complimentary to existing operations and the agricultural character of the area.

• The board determined that the proposed development does not contemplate a significant intensification to the existing operations that would require an independent formalized Emergency Response Plan to be developed. Further, the board determined that AltaGas had provided written comment outlining that they did not oppose the proposed development, but instead was seeking established controls to mitigate their raised concerns.

• The board determined that it was appropriate to permit the proposed development to have a maximum of 15 employees on site to deal with large events and confirmed that the respondent did not raise concern about the increased employee allowance.

• The board determined that it would be appropriate to ensure that the appellant and AltaGas are in constant communication relative to upcoming events and therefore has added a requirement for proactive communication for events occurring on the lands.

The subdivision and development appeal board is made up of county councillors and appointed public members.

Kurt Angle Questions Decision For WWE SummerSlam Main Event – Wrestling Inc.

Kurt Angle Questions Decision For WWE SummerSlam Main Event - Wrestling Inc.

Kurt Angle enjoys a good Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar bout, but he’s ready to see the “Head Of The Table” face some new blood too. In a new conversation with “NBC Sports”, Angle was asked about WWE having trouble finding comparable replacements to a star at the level of the Beast Incarnate, and he believes a good deal of the struggle comes from competition.

“I think that has a lot to do with the other promotion starting to get some momentum behind them — AEW,” Angle said. “You know, WWE lost a lot of talent to them. They’re looking at their NXT guys and they’re going to start making those guys pretty soon. I think that they do have a habit of going back to the older guys like Brock Lesnar.”

Lesnar was revealed to be the man scheduled to fight Reigns for the WWE Universal Title at SummerSlam after reports surfaced that Reigns’ originally planned opponent, Randy Orton, was going to be out with injury perhaps through all of 2022, but Lesnar has faced Lesnar at numerous headline events, including just recently, at WrestleMania 38 in Dallas.

“Roman Reigns, he needs to wrestle some new talent, some NXT guys, upcoming talent that are very talented, that can match his skill,” Angle said. He didn’t mention any names, but NXT has been heavily promoting stars such as NXT Champion Bron Breakker, the North American Champion Carmelo Hayes, and Roman Reigns’ legit “Bloodline” cousin in Solo Sikoa.

“I have nothing against Brock Lesnar coming back and wrestling Roman Reigns again but it’s already been done, and you don’t want to keep doing that over and over again. You have to make new talent,” Angle added.

Angle is no stranger to battling Brock Lesnar himself, as the two had a historic main event with one another at WrestleMania 19. He’s also no stranger at helping build new stars as he was the first to face-off against John Cena in his WWE debut. The same can be said for Taz, who gave Angle his first WWE loss when debuting for the promotion back at Royal Rumble 2000.

All Elite Wrestling preparing for debut of live events in Canada

All Elite Wrestling preparing for debut of live events in Canada

There are at least three other Canadian cities Khan is considering for live events: Winnipeg, the home of former AEW world champions Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega; the promoter also organizes the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, making Calgary a natural choice; and Vancouver, where tag-team specialist Kyle O’Reilly is billed from.

“We have a lot of great Canadian wrestlers and I’m excited about the possibility of our live events here because we’ve had great success on TV here,” said Khan, who was an invited speaker at Collision, a tech conference in downtown Toronto that runs until Thursday.

Khan acknowledged that Canada, with its plethora of hockey arenas, is well suited to hosting pro wrestling events. Choosing those specific venues would come down to a handful of key factors.

“Most important thing is quality of the arena for the fans and the wrestlers and the staff, and then followed by the size for the opportunity to create revenue,” said Khan, adding that the logistics of shooting live television would also affect his decision.

All Elite Wrestling was founded in 2019 by Khan and his father Shahid Khan, who are also co-owners of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham FC of the English Premier League. AEW produces two weekly television programs for Turner networks in the United States, with Dynamite — its flagship show — available in Canada on TSN.

Digital media is at the heart of AEW’s business model, with two shows exclusively on YouTube. Khan said that those properties are helpful for expanding beyond the United States, since YouTube, podcasts, and wrestler vlogs can be accessed worldwide.

“It’s been a huge part of our growth. I don’t think it was possible to launch AEW without the TV deal being originally in place at the time and that wouldn’t have been possible if we hadn’t had the online experience,” said Khan, who noted he had been involved in online wrestling communities since the mid-1990s.

“The more ways you can make your shows and wrestlers available to fans and create awareness of the product, that’s a good thing. For the hardcore fans, there’s tons of demand for more content than even what we already provide, which is a lot.”

This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 21, 2022.

Victoria’s Whistle Buoy to host live wrestling event this summer

Victoria's Whistle Buoy to host live wrestling event this summer

Victoria craft brewing company Whistle Buoy will celebrate its third birthday with a live wrestling and music event in June.

The event, Whistlemania, is slated for June 25 from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Whistlemania will be located in the historic brick courtyard of Market Square, with local wrestling company 365 Pro Wrestling setting up a full wrestling ring inside.

“For people that have never seen our avenue of entertainment before, you’re in for a treat,” said Mike Becherer, owner of 365.

“There will be high-flying, bone-crunching action, there will also be comedy and technical wrestling,” he said. “Think of it as a smorgasbord of wrestling, so there will be something for everyone.”

Besides the headlining wrestling event, live music and food vendors will be on site all day.

Five local bands will be performing, including Neighbourly, The Projectors, Alle, DJ Juice, and Downtown Mischief.

The event will alternate between musical performances and wrestling displays, with comedian Evan Mumford acting as a host for the event.

Local eateries including Los Pana Kitchen, Wannawafel, Hey Happy, and the Wandering Mollusk will also be in Market Square for Whistlemania. More food vendors are expected to be announced as the event date draws closer.
