Departing from the traditional luncheon for the time being, a variety of activities are scheduled instead during every day of Seniors Week in different locations around town, offering Airdrie elders some entertainment and social opportunities.

Rhonda Auclair, Airdrie 1st Club president, said the smaller, more focused Seniors Week events will offer plenty of opportunities for Airdrie seniors to get out and do the things they enjoy.

“We’re going to be doing events every day of the week, and different kinds of events. There’s lots of different things for people to do,” said Auclair.

“We thought of what we could do for seniors that is fun and engaging to them in many different ways,” she said.

“Not everyone wants to sit down and have a luncheon, so this has really broadened the scope of what we can involve seniors in.”

Events such as music bingo, local brewery tasting, paint night and a crib tournament are scheduled all throughout the week for prices varying from $0 to $20.

Seniors fitness classes are also scheduled each day at Genesis Place, being offered free of charge.

Friday, June 10 will feature a barbecue lunch and car show at The Hamlets at Cedarwood Station for $5.

Seniors Week took on a different format to accommodate those still wary of large gatherings, but Auclair said it offers folks a lot more to do throughout the whole week.

“Feeling that people are still a little sensitive about having too big of groups, this year we’re trying to do a more spread out and varied kind of event,” said Auclair.

“I see this really being a positive thing going forward, and maybe there will be even more next year,” she said.

“It allows seniors to have those opportunities, and maybe there’s something new that they want to try.”

She said the main goal is to show appreciation and give Seniors a chance to connect with one another through a variety of activities.

“Seniors Week is a celebration of all the people in our communities who have provided so much to the community, and us trying to give back to them,” said Auclair.

“It’s to socialize, especially after covid—to get back out into the community and to know it’s safe.”
