ICC to confirm hosts for four major women’s global events at annual conference

ICC to confirm hosts for four major women's global events at annual conference
The ICC will confirm the hosts for four marquee women’s global events in the 2023-27 period during their annual conference starting in Birmingham this weekend. The four tournaments feature two T20 World Cups, one 50-over World Cup and one T20 Champions Trophy, which were part of the half a dozen events the ICC recently finalised as part of the women’s rights, which for the first time will be sold separately from men’s rights.

The host venues for the women’s events will be finalised by a working group comprising ICC directors who will arrive at a shortlist from the bids received. ESPNcricinfo has learned that ICC has received 16 proposals from seven countries for the four events.

Based on the recommendations of the working group – comprising former New Zealand fast bowler Martin Snedden who is also chairman of New Zealand Cricket, former India captain and current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, Cricket West Indies’ president Ricky Skerritt and former England women’s captain Clare Connor who is also the acting ECB CEO – the ICC will take the final call at the meeting on July 26. The annual conference will begin with the Chief Executives Committee (CEC) meeting on July 24 followed by the Finance & Commercial Affairs committee meeting on July 25, and will end with the annual general meeting which follows the board meeting.

Unlike in the previous cycles when women’s rights were sold as part of the consolidated rights package, the ICC has decided to unbundle the rights for men’s and women’s events and sell them in different territories separately. There are a total of 103 matches across the six women’s events with the rights being sold for three packages – TV, digital, TV and digital combined – for four years. The aim was to maximise the financial returns, and, as part of the new plan the ICC has also decided to sell the TV and digital rights separately. Accordingly, a rights tender for men’s events for the Indian market, the most lucrative territory, went on sale recently with successful bids to be announced in early September.

T20 Leagues vs international cricket

One of the key discussions the CEC could potentially discuss involves the primacy of international cricket and whether it is under threat from the growing number of domestic T20 leagues. In the near-completed version of the ICC’s next cycle of FTP (2023-27), the IPL has got an extended two-and-a-half-month window and Hundred and BBL also have home-season windows.
While ICC has no direct role to play considering it is the member countries that decide on both the bilateral series as well as T20 league windows, at least one Full Member has expressed concern in public over the international calendar being encroached on by the franchise-based tournaments. Recently the PCB wrote a letter to ICC saying it was a “little concerned that the proliferation of domestic leagues around the world is sucking time out of the international calendar” and requested a working group to be formed to address the issue.

ICC also likely to discuss Afghanistan’s future

Another important discussion the ICC is likely to take up is the future of Afghanistan cricket. Last year, after the Taliban took charge of Afghanistan, the board formed a working group to observe and review cricket in the war-torn country. A key part of the working group’s brief was to understand whether the women’s cricket was indeed in “peril” as former Afghanistan Cricket Board Hamid Shinwari told ESPNcricinfo last year.
Doubts over Afghanistan’s future in international cricket emerged last September, when the deputy head of Taliban’s cultural commission Ahmadullah Wasiq, told SBS News that it wasn’t “necessary” for women to play cricket because “they might face a situation where their face and body will not be covered.” Cricket Australia even postponed the Test match against Afghanistan, which was scheduled for Hobart last November, following the stance.
Afghanistan became a Full Member of the ICC in 2017 despite not having a national women’s team. team. At the time ICC had made the exemption subject to ACB investing in the development of women’s sport. In November 2020 the ACB had pledged to offer 25 women’s players contracts with aim of developing their game, but Tailban’s arrival halted all the progress.

The ICC working group on Afghanistan is chaired by Imran Khwaja, Ross McCollum, Lawson Naidoo and Ramiz Raja, and the panel is set to update the board.

The conference agenda also includes finalising the process for the ICC chairman election, which is likely to take place in November when the current chair Greg Barclay’s first term ends. Apart from this, the members are also set to iron out FTP further, and a final version is expected only post the annual conference.

Celebrate Your Awesome sees record support at annual event

Celebrate Your Awesome sees record support at annual event

By Sam Odrowski

An in-person celebration of all backgrounds, ages, religions, and sexual orientations returned to Mill Street on Saturday (June 18) for Celebrate Your Awesome’s annual Pride and Diversity Day.

It’s the first time in two years a celebration’s been held at Mill Street, with the annual event being marked virtually in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

This year’s turnout was fantastic, surpassing attendance numbers from 2018 and 2019. Celebrate Your Awesome founder and committee member Jim Waddington said the event has grown leaps and bounds.

Fellow committee member, Ricky Schaede called the event a “smashing success.”

“We weren’t quite sure what to expect, just because the last in person event had been so long ago,” he said. “But I think that it was like way more people than we’ve ever had before, and it was such a positive response.”

From early afternoon to late at night on Saturday, Mill Street was filled with live entertainment, featuring bands, soloists, dance groups, choirs, and drag queens.

“I think people really enjoyed the daytime drag performance, the street was absolutely packed,” Schaede said. “The crowd really seemed energized and really into it.”

For the first time ever, Celebrate Your Awesome held the “Queerly Here” art market at Mill Square Park.

Schaede said there was lots of talented artists set up with booths showing off their work.

“That was an interesting new element of the event this year… a highlight for sure,” Schaede noted.

The celebration also featured “Community Zones”, which had booths from an array of social services and not-for-profit organizations providing information to attendees.

The need is strong for an event like Pride and Diversity Day for members of the 2SLBGTQIA+ community in Dufferin County, according to Schaede.

“I think really, with this event, we want people to know that no matter where you’re from, or what your age or gender identity or sexual orientation is, that you’re welcome in this community, in Orangeville, and in Dufferin County. That there’s a place for you here and that there’s other people like you here, just to create that feeling of sort of inclusion and belonging in this town,” Schaede told the Free Press. “It’s important because for a lot of young, gay and queer people growing up here, they feel like they don’t belong and then they leave town.”

He continued, “That’s kind of a sad thing to grow up somewhere where you feel you don’t belong, and I know for myself growing up what that was like, and I decided not to leave this town.”

Schaede said, through the event, he hopes it shows people they can feel a sense of belonging right here in Dufferin County.

“There’s a place for you here,” he said. “You don’t have to be ashamed to be who you are here, and I think that’s sort of the main reason why we do it.”

Schaede added that he noticed for a lot of young people, Celebrate Your Awesome’s celebration last Saturday was their first Pride event and they got a lot out of it.

“I think it was pretty mind opening for a lot of young people. I talked to young person – they’re a queer person – it was their first Pride event, and they really enjoyed seeing all the other like queer people out there. It kind of made them feel a bit more normal, I guess,” he noted.

“It makes them feel like safer in the town, and more comfortable expressing themselves authentically.”

Schaede said he’d like to thank all the sponsors, committee members, volunteers, performers, and vendors who helped make this year’s event “awesome.”

Looking ahead to next year’s Pride and Diversity Day event, organizers plan on holding fundraisers in between to help offset the costs of putting it on. They’re also looking at hosting pop-up social events.

Schaede said to watch Celebrate Your Awesome’s Facebook page for updates and to send a message there if you’re interested in joining the committee or getting more involved.

“We’re always looking for young, energetic people who are looking to contribute,” he told the Free Press. “There’s definitely space for more people to join us.”

4 Annual Gaming Events You Shouldn’t Miss

man playing pc games

There are some incredible video game expos out there, hosting talks, reveals, and demonstrations from all the biggest and best in the industry.

While most people have heard of E3, there are other great gaming events that showcase the latest gaming news, releases, and hardware. Let’s take a look at four annual gaming events you shouldn’t miss.

Gamescom takes the title of the largest video game event, boasting an impressive 370,000 visitors and over 1000 stalls in 2019.

Taking place in August, this four-day video games fair covers everything from cutting-edge hardware to boundary-pushing video game engines. During the online event in 2021, it accrued over 63 million users and 5.1 million hours watched.

In 2022, after a two-year hiatus, the event will be back in its physical location in Cologne, Germany, rather than all online. Tickets for the event range from $32 for a day to $10 for just a single evening. Of course, there is also live-streaming of the more significant parts of the fair, but for the full experience, a visit to its host city of Cologne is necessary. If the distance is too far, then the event is live-streamed across its YouTube channel as well as a number of others, such as Xbox and IGN.

This monster of an event is no doubt the king of the shows, but making the pilgrimage may be a little too far for some. For those who make it to the actual event, there are both sections for the business side of the convention for a chance for developers to rub shoulders with potential industry contacts and a much more hands-on area.

For the average visitor, this entertainment area will be the main reason for a visit, being able to try out all the newest games and tech while speaking to the people who develop it is an unmissable opportunity.

Originally called Penny Arcade Expo, this event was started in 2004 as a means to have an expo dedicated to all things games. PAX shares its focus across tabletop, arcade, and video gaming, so has a slightly wider range than the other events on this list.

PAX is held over a number of locations around the world over multiple dates throughout the year. PAX East starts the year in April taking place in Boston, MA, a few months later PAX West is in Seattle, WA during September. Melbourne, Australia hosts the third event of the year during October, and the final event, PAX Unplugged, finishes up the year in Philadelphia, PA.

PAX East, West, and Australian ticket prices range from $235 for a full four-day ticket down to $62 for just a day ticket. PAX Australia is the cheaper option, but PAX east is by far the more popular event. All events can also be streamed on its Twitch sites. Find out how to watch the event on Twitch with our handy guide on how to use Twitch effectively.

PAX Unplugged is an event slightly apart from the rest, it was started in 2017 when the organizers recognized the demand for the more manual side of its fan base. Unplugged focuses entirely on the tabletop, card game, and role-playing side of the event.

The other three events focus on all things gaming with huge showcases of the newest tech, platforms for indie studios to really exhibit their work to potential investors, and massive tournaments. A weekend of music, demos, and talks will satiate any video game enthusiast.

After the cancellation of the in-person event in 2021, the Tokyo Game Show, commonly referred to as TGS, now takes place in person in the Makuhari Messe convention center.

This event takes place over four days, showcasing the very best from mostly Japanese gaming companies with a number of companies from outside the country permitted when announcing the bigger releases. Starting as a bi-annual event in 1996, this Japanese game fair now runs only once yearly and attracted over 280,000 people in 2018.

This event runs slightly differently from the previous two, with its four-day run time split into the first two days reserved exclusively for industry and the second two days open to the public. This gives time for publishers to really spend time with the people who keep the money moving around the industry before putting on the big show for the public.

Japan is without a doubt a front-runner in the video game industry, with huge studios like Konami, Square Enix, and Capcom all stemming from the island. There will always be some big announcements from some of the most prestigious and longest-standing studios, with new IPs announced and new additions to some long-running favorites that keep the industry alive.

In 2022, after a two-year break from the in-person expo, the event will take place both online and in person. It advertises a highly enhanced online experience and has all 46 programs live-streamed across YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, and Twitter.

If you feel like you’re missing out on the group experience, you’ll be glad to know you can watch YouTube with friends. Tickets for the event can be bought for $7.50 online or $9 on the door.

Started in 2014 by host and producer Geoff Keighley, this show primarily focuses on game awards, as the name suggests. There have also been many game announcements during the show and further looks into previous announcements. A key moment for video game news seekers came in 2014 when Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild showcased its first-ever gameplay reveal at TGA.

The Game Awards runs for only one day and is live-streamed for free over the whole world. It can be watched via almost every streaming platform including Twitch, YouTube, Facebook Live, and Steam. Boasting an impressive 85 million viewers in 2021, this show streams every December to higher audiences each year.

This event may not be at the forefront of gaming news and announcements, but there is usually guaranteed to be one new, exciting event that will keep the video game industry talking for a few weeks. This free one-day event is worth tuning into just to find out who has won Game of The Year, so you know what to add to your collection if you haven’t already.

What Will Be Your Next Gaming Event?

There are plenty of opportunities to stay abreast of what’s going on in the ever-changing world of video games aside from E3.

With a broad choice of events ranging from the awards based events such as The Game Awards to Gamescom, the huge four-day event in Germany, there is something for everyone. Which gaming event will you keep an eye out for?

Calgary’s annual stairclimb event has a different look for in-person return

Calgary's annual stairclimb event has a different look for in-person return

While there weren’t any stairs involved in this year’s annual stairclimb event, featuring Calgary’s first responders, there were plenty of donations to a worthy cause anyway.

Beginning at 8 a.m., Calgary Fire Chief Steve Dongworth and Calgary Police Chief Mark Neufeld were joined by other firefighters and civilians at Canada Olympic Park.

Once there, they put on 60 pounds of firefighting gear and climbed 390 feet in elevation for a total distance of three kilometres.

It was the first time the annual Wellspring Stairclimb Challenge was held in-person in approximately two years.

All of the money raised by participants will go to help firefighters and Calgarians who are fighting cancer.

The disease has affected many residents, including Chief Dongworth.

“Both of my parents passed away from cancer,” he told CTV News on Sunday. “We’ve had over 50 firefighters who’ve succumbed to occupational cancer – most of them retired – but I knew many of them, and many of them were friends.

“Cancer, I think for everyone, is intertwined into our lives as a terrible disease who takes people away (who are) far too young.”

A virtual climb was also available for anyone who was unable to come to the park for the in-person event.

Further details can be found on Wellspring Calgary’s website.

The three-day Global Energy Technical Conference will see energy professionals present and discuss the latest technologies and showcase innovations leading the way towards low or zero emission energy systems.
