Bobcats sending 12 entries to state swimming in nine events

Bobcats sending 12 entries to state swimming in nine events

T-R PHOTO BY NOAH ROHLFING – Marshalltown senior swimmers Marcus Barker, right, and Aaron Seberger look on after finishing in a tie for second place in the 100-yard freestyle event at Saturday’s district meet at Linn-Mar High School in Marion. Both swimmers advanced to state with their time of 48.29 seconds.

MARION — Mike Loupee was cautiously optimistic the Marshalltown boys’ swim team would have a good number of state meet qualifiers following the district meet at Linn-Mar High School Saturday afternoon.

Saturday night, the good news came through — 12 swimmers qualified in nine of the 11 events, meaning the Bobcats will be well-represented Feb. 12 at the University of Iowa. Marshalltown finished third in the team standings at districts with 323.5 points.

Loupee said the taper Marshalltown had leading up to districts was one of the best he’s seen in a while.

“The kids swam out of their brains,” Loupee said. “We had a great day. We had 36 swims, 32 of those were season and lifetime bests.

We had probably one of the better tapers we’ve had in a long, long time, and we have good tapers every year. They swam with a lot of heart, with good focus and they did everything that we asked them to do.”

Marshalltown began the meet with a five-second time drop in the 200-yard medley relay — the group of Dane Petty, Sam Greazel, Charlie Gilbertson and Carter Hunt finished fourth in the district with a time of 1 minute, 41.74 seconds. They qualified as the 19th seed.

In the 200 freestyle, Stephen Blom finished in fifth place and swam a season-best 1:48.20 to earn the 26th seed.

Petty and Lincoln Barker finished with sixth-and-seventh place times of 1:48.73 and 1:52.76, respectively. Petty qualified as the 29th seed.

Marcus Barker qualified in the first of four events with a 2:00.94 in the 200 individual medley, coming in as the 23rd seed. The very next event, Aaron Seberger put in a season-best time of 21.86 in the 50 freestyle to qualify as the eighth seed and a second-place finisher in the district.

Gilbertson then qualified as the 32nd and final seed in the 100 butterfly with a career-best time of 55.38 and a fourth-place district finish.

Seberger and Marcus Barker finished in a dead tie for second place in the 100 freestyle with 48.29, good enough for the 13th and 14th seeds at state.

Marshalltown’s distance swimmers in Blom and Petty found themselves finishing right next to each other again in the 500 freestyle, but on this occasion Petty had the better finish. With a 4:51.52, he beat Blom by three-hundredths of a second to take the 15th seed at state, while Blom’s 4:51.55 was good for 16th.

The Bobcats then nearly won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:28.74 from Seberger, Hunt, Lincoln and Marcus Barker — Linn-Mar beat the Bobcats by .5 seconds. With the result, it will be the 13th seed at state.

Loupee said a lot of the Bobcats were very impressive in the pool, but one name stuck out.

“It’s almost impossible to pick out one swimmer and one performance, because they were all great,” Loupee said. “Probably the biggest surprise of the day would be Sam Greazel’s breaststroke. He’s never broken 30 seconds and he went 28.88 in his split in the medley relay.

T-R PHOTO BY NOAH ROHLFING

“For a freshman to come into this kind of pressure and swim that well, that was tremendous.”

Greazel finished fourth in districts at the 100 breaststroke, cutting his prior career-best by five seconds with a 1:04.91. He missed the cut for state by just over one second.

The final event of the day, the 400 free relay, saw Marshalltown finish with a 3:19 — good enough for the 14th seed.

Marshalltown will have a busy Friday and Saturday in Iowa City, with preliminary events set to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday for all individual qualifiers. State begins at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday — and Loupee said he’s hopeful the Bobcats can eke out some more time before then.

“I’ve got a real good idea of what we can do ahead of prelims and finals in the coming week,” Loupee said. “I am guardedly optimistic we’ve still got some more time to drop.”

Motor racing-LA Coliseum race could lead to more NASCAR events in unlikely places

Article content

LOS ANGELES — NASCAR’s first-of-its-kind race on a temporary asphalt track inside LA Memorial Coliseum on Sunday led drivers to offer their thoughts on where similar events could be staged in the future.

Joey Logano beat Kyle Busch to win the season-opening exhibition race at the century-old venue in downtown Los Angeles, which has hosted Olympics and Super Bowls but never a NASCAR event.

“I can’t believe we’re here,” Logano said after earning his second career win of a Clash event on a sun-soaked day in Southern California.

Article content

“This is an amazing event. Congratulations to NASCAR. This is such a huge step in our industry to be able to do this and to put on an amazing race for everybody. I’m out of breath. I’m so excited about this. It was a big win.”

Third place finisher Austin Dillon suggested NASCAR build a temporary track inside the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas.

Others saw opportunities for NASCAR to expand its reach overseas.

“For me, I look at the NFL and what they do in London,” said Kevin Harvick, who finished in 10th place.

“In order to really open doors, I think Wembley Stadium would be fun. I think everyone wants to do something but the weather has to be different.”

NASCAR officials said they are exploring a variety of options.

“Everything is open,” Chief Racing Development Officer Steve O’Donnell told reporters after the race.

“We’ve proven we can go to a cool stadium with a track around it and we know what to do, we can get in and out,” he said.

“Ben, if he hasn’t already, is already studying the footprints of a lot of different stadiums in the U.S.,” said O’Donnell, referring to NASCAR Senior Vice President of Strategy and Innovation Ben Kennedy.

“What works, what may not work. But we’re also pretty happy here.”

NASCAR now moves on the Daytona 500, which will be held in two weeks.

Best of all, the page is more mobile friendly.

“As B.C. and Canada start to ease COVID restrictions, we wanted to take a look at ways we could improve our events section so that as people start to leave their homes again, it will be easier for them to find activities that interest them,” Castanet creative director Robin Jones said.

Steward Wins Three Events as Kansas Tops Iowa State in Big 12 Dual Finale

Steward Wins Three Events as Kansas Tops Iowa State in Big 12 Dual Finale

Kansas vs. Iowa State (Women Only)

  • Ames, Iowa
  • February 5th, 2022
  • SCY Dual meet
  • Team scores
    • Kansas 180 Iowa State 120
  • Full results

The Kansas Jayhawks traveled north to take on their Big 12 Rivals, the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday. Kansas played spoiler to ISU’s senior day, winning handily 180 to 120 in what was both teams’ final dual meet of the 2021-2022 season.

Leading the charge for Kansas was senior Kate Steward, who won all three of her individual events on the day. The Bartlesville, Oklahoma native started her meet with a dominant win in the breast, touching first in 1:01.75 to win by nearly 2 seconds. She completed the breaststroke sweep with a 4 and a half second victory in the 200 breast, swimming a 2:13.89 to nearly miss the 2015 pool record. The senior closed out her meet with a win in the 200 IM, touching first in 2:04.49.

Steward’s season bests sit at 1:00.68 in the 100 breast, 2:11.71 in the 200 breast and 1:59.90 in the 200 IM. While she currently sits outside of NCAA qualification range in all three races, if she nails her taper at the Big 12 Championships in a couple of weeks Steward could have a realistic shot at punching her ticket to Atlanta in March.

Kansas was also dominant on the boards, with junior All American Jiaya Chen sweeping both the 1 and 3 meter events. The Zhanjiang, China native posted a 335.65 in the one meter to win by nearly 30 points and later returned to win the 3 meter with a score of 359.55. Both of her efforts broke the Iowa State pool records, with the 1 meter record previously being set in 2016, and Chen setting the previous 3 meter record in 2020.

Iowa State was led by sophomore distance swimmer Brinley Horras, who swept both the 1000 and 500 on Saturday. In the 1000, the Ames, Iowa native swam a patient race, not leading until the 300 yard mark, but over the next 300 opened up a 5 second lead by the 600 turn. She went on to win by over 6 seconds, touching in 10:16.80. She later returned to win the 500 free as well, but this time led wire to wire after touching in 5:00.88. Horras’ season bests sit at 10:07.73 in the 1000 and 4:54.66 in the 500.

Iowa State senior diver Michelle Schlossmacher Smith also impressed for the Cyclones, taking down the program record in the 3 meter event. The Roseville, Minnesota native broke the Cyclone program record, which had stood since the 2008-2009 season, in the prelims with a score of 348.83.

Other individual event winners:

  • 200 free: Ellie Wehrmann (Kansas): 1:52.35
  • 100 back: Ellie Howe (Kansas): 56.50
  • 200 fly: Amelie Lessing(Kansas)/Lucia Rizzo (Iowa State): 2:04.05
  • 50 free: Keyla Brown (Kansas)/Clausia Dougan (Kansas): 23.96
  • 100 free: Claudia Dougan (Kansas): 51.65
  • 200 back: Emily Haan (Iowa State): 2:03.24
  • 100 fly: Autumn Looney (Kansas): 55.85

Both programs will now take two and a half weeks off from competition before heading to Morgantown, West Virginia for the Big 12 Championships.
