In Centre County, there will be numerous events taking place this Memorial Day weekend.

The unofficial start of summer will see several big events over the next three days. The biggest event will take place in Boalsburg, which claims to be the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1864.

After a two-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Boalsburg Fire Company’s events are back — and they’re better than ever.

The Boalsburg Fire Company’s carnival began on Thursday night and continues through Monday at the station grounds on East Pine Street. A parade is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

According to its Facebook page, the carnival will start after the parade on Saturday and run until 10 p.m. It runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 29 and from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Monday, May 30 (Memorial Day).

Sunday will be a wristband day, with unlimited rides for $20. The parade lineup is set for 3-4 p.m. on Saturday, with the parade starting at 5 p.m. sharp.

Monday is Boalsburg’s Day in Town, which includes the Memorial Day Race starting at 8:30 a.m. in Blue Spring Park. Throughout the day, the village will have vendors, live entertainment, activities and demonstrations, with additional events taking place at Boal Mansion, Boalsburg Heritage Museum and the Pennsylvania Military Museum. The day culminates with the procession at 5:45 p.m. to the cemetery. There, the annual Memorial Day service, emceed by Jeff Brown of 99.5 The Bus, will take place starting at 6 p.m.

While the Boalsburg events are the biggest of the weekend, there will be other events throughout the county.

At the Pleasant Hills development in Pleasant Gap, there will be the annual Memorial Day sales. Many homes in the development will be having yard sales and garage sales. Individual homes determine start and end times, so simply head to Pleasant Hills and look for the signs.

In Beech Creek, the American Legion there will host its annual Memorial Day Parade beginning at 10 a.m. The parade will begin in Blanchard near the Liberty Baptist Church and will end at the grounds of the American Legion. Parade line-up starts at 9 a.m. at the Blanchard baseball fields behind Griffin’s Restaurant. Traffic will be stopped once the parade gets on state Route 150, so plan accordingly.

Memorial Day events set in area

Tire collection event planned in Elkins April 23

ELKINS — To some Memorial Day and the weekend that leads up to the holiday is the official kickoff to the summer. A time to unwind, fire up the grill and have an extra day off work. But the true meaning of the cherished holiday remains and always will be a day to pay homage to fallen soldiers , who paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend the United States of America.

“To most people it’s another day to have a cookout or whatever, but to a veteran it’s more important,” said Elkins American Legion Post 29 Finance Officer Rick Hinchman. “But most of us observe it as a day when we think about all the sacrifices veterans have made over the years.”

Post 29 will once again be holding its annual Memorial Day Celebration at the All-Veterans Memorial in Elkins at 11 a.m. Monday. The event will feature guest speakers, the laying of wreaths and other tributes.

“We are going to go out and put all the flags down on Monday morning in preparation for the event,” said Hinchman. “Then after the ceremony is over we will have lunch for all the veterans.”

Elkins American Legion will also be at Little Arlington Cemetery on Saturday to put flags at the grave sites of veterans. Boy Scout Troop 66 out of Beverly will assist Post 29.

“We will put the flags up at the grave sites and then take them down the following Saturday,” said Hinchman.

The Belington VFW, along with American Legion members, will also be placing flags on veterans’ graves this weekend. The flags will be laid at the Fraternal Cemetery in Belington on Saturday morning beginning at 9 a.m.

There will also be a Memorial Day Service in Barbour County at 1 p.m. on Monday. The event will be at the Fraternal Cemetery and will feature the American Legion Honor Guard performing Taps and a Gun Salute. VFW and Auxiliary will lay a wreath for each war in remembrance of those killed in actions.

In Buckhannon, volunteers began hanging “Walk of Valor Banners” in Jawbone Park this week to honor veterans. Close to 700 banners will be hung leading up to Monday’s Memorial Day Ceremony at Heavener Cemetery.

Memorial Day, which was originally known as Decoration Day, is a federal holiday to honor and mourn United States military personnel who have died while serving in the armed forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May.

Microbrewery hosting Police Week fundraising events

Microbrewery hosting Police Week fundraising events

Numbers Brewing Company honors police officers by hosting fundraisers this week to benefit five police departments.

LISBON — The third week of May is National Police Week and Numbers Brewing Company is celebrating through Saturday. Throughout the week, they will be hosting a different police department each day and donating ten percent of their sales to help with equipment or community projects. Marketing and promotions director Randy Schneider said it’s a great way to connect the community to police officers.

“Along with the percent of sales going to help each department, this has turned out to be a great community bonding experience with each department … as each of the departments get to engage with citizens in a slightly different but fun atmosphere,” Schneider said.

Schneider, who also is a sergeant with Leetonia police, said he and his friends had spoken about doing a fun fundraiser that is a community-relations event. “This is more of a laid-back atmosphere for the officers and police departments to get to know people and give them a chance to talk to them a little more one on one in a more comfortable atmosphere where they don’t feel like it’s the whole uniform and badge type atmosphere,” he said. “It’s a great way for them to raise money.”

Schneider said the event is more than raising funds. For him, it’s a matter of humanizing the badge. “People were a bit hesitant when we first did it the first year,” he said. “After the first day people saw, oh wait, this isn’t just a cop. It’s kind of cool. I can talk to this guy I always see out doing traffic or responding to incidents.”

Schneider said he believes this will be the third year for the fundraiser. COVID had halted the event for the last couple of years, he said.

Numbers kicked Police Week off yesterday, hosting the Hancock County K9 unit featuring raffles and 85 cent wing night. Tonight, the Leetonia Police Department will be there at 6 p.m. For the rest of the week’s schedule, on Thursday, Columbiana police’s K9 unit will be there at 6 p.m. on Numbers bike night with $1 off Numbers drafts. Friday, Salem police’s K9 unit and handler Michael Garber will be there at 5 p.m. along with raffles and live music from Darren Miller. For the final night Saturday at 6 p.m., Lisbon police chief Michael Abraham and the Lisbon K9 unit will be present and they will be selling K9 merchandise including T-shirts, hoodies, can cozies and wine tumblers. Buddy Schneider will provide live music.

“I hope to see everyone out,” Schneider said.

Things shift into high gear on Tuesday when carnival rides begin to operate. There will be an armband special for $30 beginning on Tuesday and running through Friday, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are also available each night and will be needed to ride on Saturday when the carnival operates from 1 p.m. until close.

The Food Court will also open on Tuesday at Jawbone Park and there will be a free Family Fun Night at the Stockert Youth Center from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. The USDA Snakes of West Virginia by Roy Moose will be on hand at the youth center event.

On Wednesday, Opening Ceremonies, along with the lighting of the Festival Flame, will be held at noon at the Courthouse Plaza. A Photography Exhibit will be on display at the Colonial Theatre MIB Gallery from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., and the Coronation of the King and Queen will take place at the West Virginia Wesleyan College Chapel at 6:30 p.m.

Live music will also take the stage Wednesday evening at the Jawbone Park Stage from 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. and the Queens Ball will be at 8:30 p.m. at the WVWC Social Hall.

Another full day of activities are planned for Thursday, beginning with the CEO Quilt Show at the WVWC Gymnasium starting at 9 a.m. There will be a Diaper Derby and Children’s Strawberry Blonde contest at the Courthouse Plaza at 10 a.m., as well as an Arts and Crafts display at the Stockert Youth Center. The Photography Exhibit will open at 10 a.m. at the Colonial Theatre MIB Gallery and entertainment will be on the Courthouse Plaza beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The Junior Royal Parade is at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday on Strawberry Lane and the Jawbone Park Stage will host live music beginning at 7:30 p.m. Strawberry Idol (80’s Theme) will be at the Courthouse Plaza at 8:30 p.m.

On Friday, Strawberry Pancakes will be served at the First United Methodist Church from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m., while the Quilt Show, Photography Exhibit, and Arts & Craft Show will be open at their respective locations. Spring Fling is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Upshur Senior Center. Live music and entertainment will run from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Courthouse Plaza, and the Strawberry Capping Championship and Crowning of the Lord and Lady will be at the Upshur Senior Center at 1 p.m.

The Sweetest Berry Competition will be held at the Courthouse Plaza at 3 p.m. on Friday, followed by a Strawberry Auction at the same location. Entertainment will continue after the auction on the plaza at 5:30 p.m.

The Fireman’s Parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday on Strawberry Lane. After the parade at 8 p.m. there will be numerous contests and live entertainment (Jawbone Park) along with Party Gras (Main Street). Strawberry Idol will perform at the Courthouse Plaza at 8:30 p.m.

All of the shows and exhibits will be open again on Saturday, and the Mountaineer Strawberry 2700 Championships will get underway at 9 a.m. at White Horse. There will be an Antique Engine and Tractor Show at the Stockert Youth Center at the same time and the Strawberry Mile Race is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Academy School.

The Grand Feature Parade will be on Strawberry Lane and will begin at 1 p.m. Following the parade there will be a Classic Car Parade and Irish Road Bowling (4 p.m.) on Turkey Run Road. A Classic Car Cruise-in will be at 5 p.m. on Main Street and entertainment is planned throughout the evening at the Courthouse Plaza, Jawbone Park and Main Street. An evening with the Drum and Bugle Corps will be at West Virginia Wesleyan College’s Ross Stadium at 5:30 p.m.

On Sunday the Mountaineer Strawberry 2700 Championships will be at 8 a.m. at White Horse and the Jack Barker Canoe Race will be at Wood Street Park at noon. The carnival will run from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday, and there will be a Gospel Sing at the Way of Holiness Church at 2 p.m.

This year’s event is the 80th annual West Virginia Strawberry Festival. The Festival was started as a way to honor strawberry growers and help them increase sales. The very first Festival was just a day-long celebration and as its popularity grew over the years, it became a week-long celebration.

Chamber preparing for summer of events

Library programs, events detailed

FOLLANSBEE — Those looking to get out more this summer are invited to attend monthly events planned by the Follansbee Chamber of Commerce.

May 21 will mark the return of the chamber’s monthly Sidewalk Saturday sales and a series of free concerts at Follansbee Park will begin with the Ron Retzer Trio on May 30.

Held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month, the sidewalk sales involve brick and mortar businesses along Main Street and vendors of an assortment of household items who set up booths outside.

The event was launched a few years ago to bring attention to the assortment of businesses on the street, which includes restaurants, a men’s clothing and shoe store, an antique store, and an appliance and furniture store.

This year chamber members who don’t have buildings on Main have been invited to set up booths along the street as well.

The sidewalk sales are coordinated by Monica Rotellini-Myers, owner of Moe’s on Main, a shop that sells an assortment of locally made items as well as food produced in Amish country.

Rotellini-Myers said those who visit the city that day are encouraged to pick up a card on which the names of participating businesses and vendors are printed. Patrons who ask for each business or vendor to check off his or her name can then turn them in at Moe’s on Main for a chance to win a different gift basket each month.

Rotellini-Myers said there are plans to adopt a different theme for each month as the event proceeds into September.

Chamber President Eric Fithyan said the group’s Monthly Monday Music Madness series of free concerts also will return with a variety of musicians slated to perform from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the last Monday of each month at Follansbee Park.

The first, featuring the Ron Retzer Trio, will coincide with the Memorial Day weekend opening of the park and its swimming pool.

Located behind the Bluewave Center, formerly Follansbee Middle School, the park also includes a playground and walking trail. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets.

The lineup for this year’s concerts includes the Joseph Sisters, a country trio, on June 27; popular dance band Twice as Nice, on July 25; and Pocket Change, who deliver a mix of rock, jazz and rhythm and blues, on Aug. 29.

Fithyan said chamber members have been invited to set up booths with food, information or other items, and some have made plans to offer a simple activity for children.

Following a short winter break, the chamber has been busy this year. Following a job fair in March organized with the Business Development Corp. of the Northern Panhandle, Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce and West Virginia Northern Community College, the chamber resumed monthly meetings.

Fithyan said the group will continue to meet at noon on the third Wednesday of each month at the Follansbee Community House.

Since stepping into the president’s role earlier this year, Fithyan has added business cards for the chamber with a QR card that will take smartphone users to the chamber’s website with a list of chamber members and hyperlinks to take the user to those businesses’ own websites.

He noted the chamber also uses a Facebook page, established under former president Debbie Puskarich, to announce upcoming events.

“We have new businesses pouring into the chamber, businesses from all over the Ohio Valley,” said Fithyan, who added, “Our focus is on people who want to do business in Follansbee, regardless of whether they have brick and mortar buildings here.”

Council talks downtown events

FAIRMONT– The Fairmont City Council on Monday considered several permits for events to be held on Downtown Plaza at the end of the month

While event permits are typically on the consent agenda, City Administrator Cathy Reynolds said they pulled a few with new developments they hadn’t yet seen so she wanted to provide council the opportunity to discuss them.

“These two permits, in conjunction with one approved by the council last meeting, will provide for five days of activities in Downtown Fairmont during the week before and weekend of Memorial Day,” Reynolds said.

However, because they propose closing down portions of Downtown Plaza and the downtown business district for five days, Reynolds said she wanted to let council have conversation about them.

The first permit was for the Fairmont Opera House to hold a Star Wars event on May 25 in front of the Opera House. The Opera House was asking to block Downtown Plaza from the intersection of Blue Earth Ave. to the south end of its property.

“It’s a great opportunity. We have a lot of great things happening in the community but because this is three permits closing down for five days I did want to pull them out for council to discuss if it desires,” Reynolds said.

Mayor Deb Foster asked if the businesses that would be affected by it had been informed. Reynolds said that when permits are turned in that involve road closures, the applicants are advised to notify businesses that will be affected.

The council approved of the May 25 event.

The next permit request was for the Fairmont Opera House’s Memorial Weekend Street Fest, which is slated to take place May 27 and 28.

Reynolds explained that in the permit request, the proposal was to put a stage up between City Hall and the Blazer Bar for a band on Friday evening and the stage may stay up overnight. On Saturday morning a second stage around the Human Services building and Edie’s will be put up and a series of shows will take place between the two stages on that day.

“They planned some food trucks and games and different activities during the day,” Reynolds said.

The event would involve some road closures around different access points to Downtown Plaza.

Council Member Bruce Peters cited the various eating establishments in that vicinity of Downtown Plaza and said the idea concerned him as it involves road closures and would make it more difficult to get to the restaurants. He asked if city staff had heard from any of the restaurants and Reynolds said no.

Council Member Wayne Hasek pointed out that the event could lead to people going into the different downtown restaurants to eat and Council Member Britney Kawecki added that people could check out the retail shops as well.

“I don’t disagree, but if there’s 11 food trucks, the likelihood of increasing at Edie’s or El Agave is relatively scant,” Peters said.

Foster said she went to several businesses and asked if they had any concerns and was told they were unaware of it. She suggested that moving forward, anytime there’s an event where there will be a road closure, a public hearing should be held to allow any individuals or business owners to come and voice their thoughts or concerns.

Reynolds agreed that she’d like to encourage individuals, organizations and businesses to bring the city in at the planning stage when it involves an event that would require a road closure.

“When they’re in the parks it’s one thing but when we start closing down roads… we’re having a lot of events and it’s great and wonderful that people are planning all of these events… but trying to figure out the road closures, if we can get the communication started with city staff earlier in the process… so that everyone’s aware of it,” Reynolds said.

The council approved of the permit request for the May 27, 28 event.

Moving to other matters, the council reviewed some liquor license violations. Although a public hearing was held which allowed any member of the public of business associated with the violations to speak, no one spoke out at the pubic hearing.

The Fairmont City Council imposed a civil penalty of $750 upon both the Fairmont Municipal Liquor Store and El Agave. On Dec. 31, 2021, at both establishments, an employee sold an alcoholic beverage to an underage person who was authorized by the Fairmont Police Department to assist with compliance checks of liquor license holders.

“It’s king of embarrassing that this happened at our liquor store. Have we made changes to the training so that this doesn’t happen again?” asked Lubenow.

Reynolds said they addressed the issue and talked to the employee and have appropriately documented that it has occurred. She said they’ve used the incident as a training opportunity within the store.

Peters asked how they will fine themselves. Reynolds explained that they will cut a check from the liquor store funds and put it in the general fund.

Several local businesses, Walgreens, Hy-Vee Grocery and Hy-Vee Convenience Store, also had civil penalties imposed on them after failing tobacco compliance checks executed by the Fairmont Police Department on Dec. 11, 2021. Each business was fined $300.

The council also held a second public hearing on a rezoning request by Krueger Realty, Inc. for 1800 State Hwy. 15 S. This was the second public hearing that was held on the request. On Monday the council approved to rezone the property from R-1 single family residential to R-3 multiple family residential.

In other action, the council:

— Approved a purchase order for the purchase of residential water meters which will total $636,000. City Engineer Troy Nemmers shared that the current meters are 15 years old and upgrading them will provide better tracking of water usage across the city. The Public Utilities Commission had also approved of the purchase.

— Approved a phone system proposal from Midco to replace city staff’s existing phone system. There is no equipment purchase necessary and no installation fee and the monthly fee should be comparable to the exiting fee from Frontier.

— Approved an agreement with MSA Professional Services to complete a zoning ordinance and subdivision regulation update. The council had previously budgeted $40,000 and the cost of the service will be $44,000 plus approximately $1,200 in additional expenses.

— Approved seven event permits for upcoming community events to be held in the summer in the city of Fairmont.

In other news, three part-time police officers were recently hired at the Fairmont Police Department and two of them, Seth Reinke and Carolyn Jacobson, were sworn in at

Monday’s council meeting. Jon Auringer was unable to attend.

Annual events make ‘normal’ return

Annual events make ‘normal’ return

ABOVE: From left Kathy Mathiason, Pam Hill, Carol Hazard, Harriet Danielson and Carolyn Thompson engage in conversation while enjoying tasty treats and fresh brewed tea and coffee late Saturday morning on the outside patio of the historic Chubb House in Fairmont.

FAIRMONT– The first full weekend of May was a busy one in Fairmont as several annual events made their return.

On Saturday the historic Orville P. Chubb House, located at 209 Lake Ave. in Fairmont, opened its doors to the public for the annual Spring tea. The Chubb House typically hosts two community events a year, one in the winter and one in the spring. The last event that was held there was in 2019 as 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions and concerns.

The first event back after a two year hiatus did not disappoint. Mary Don Kislingbury, a Martin County Preservation Association member, estimated that 125 people attend the Spring tea on Saturday. The warm weather also allowed for outdoor seating which was nice given the large crowd and small size of Fairmont’s oldest surviving building. The Chubb House’s loyal volunteers served tea, coffee, fruit, baked goods and a variety of delicacies.

Another event that made its return this weekend was Borchardt Dance Company’s annual recital, which took place Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon at the Performing Arts Center at Fairmont High School.

For more than 50 years, BDC’s recital has taken place over Mother’s Day weekend. However, in 2020 the recital was held in July at Martin Luther High School in Northrop. Last year, the recital also took place over the summer with capacity limits.

To the excitement and relief of many, this year’s recital was held on the traditional dates and in the traditional venue with no capacity limits. Thirty-two different dances took place by dancers from as young as three, all the way to 18-year-old seniors in high school. Several numbers were also done by those in the adult dance class.

The busy weekend was just the start of a busy season and events around Fairmont will continue next weekend with Dancin’ Plus’s recital, which will take place Friday through Sunday at the Fairmont Opera House.

Emmalyne’s Angel Day, an event held by the Forever, Emmalyne organization, will take place Sunday, May 15 at the East Chain Activity Center. The event will include a 5K, activities, music, food and a raffle.

Later that week, from May 19 to the 21st, Kinship of Martin County’s annual industrial auction will be held at the Martin County fairgrounds.

On Saturday, May 21, the Fairmont Lakes Foundation’s bi-annual lake shore clean up will take place. Several other events and activities will take place around town that weekend, including an activity at the Martin County Library in Fairmont, a Boy Scout event at Cedar Point Scout Camp and an event hosted by the Kids Just Want to Have Fun committee at Heritage Acres.

Toward the end of the month, on May 26, there will be an unveiling of Going Hog Wild’s competed hog statues, which will go to more than 30 businesses and organizations around Martin County. The statues were painted by more than a dozen area artists. The event will start at 5 p.m. on Downtown Plaza.

The last weekend of the month will also be a busy one with Fairmont Opera House’s Memorial Day Street Fest, which will take place on Downtown Plaza on Saturday, May 28. The event will consist of live music, various food trucks and activities for children and families.

While many people’s schedules may be quickly filling up leading into summer, it’s probably safe to say it’s a welcome sight after two years of many cancelled events and celebrations.

To learn more about upcoming activities and events, check out the Fairmont Area Community Calendar at fairmontareacalendar.com.
