The Mountaineer Chapter of Izaak Walton League offered an Air Rifle/Pistol Shooting Event in May, with 10 young people participating in the event.


BEVERLY — The Mountaineer Chapter of Izaak Walton League members are excited to be able to once again present their annual free youth events to the community this year.

In May the Chapter’s Air Rifle/Pistol Shooting Event was offered, with 10 kids participating in the event. The next Air Rifle/Pistol Shooting Event has been scheduled for Sept. 10.

This year the chapter will be combining their Youth Conservation Day with their Family Campout on Saturday, July 23.

Youth Conservation Day is a free event open to children ages 8 -17 years, while under-aged children must be supervised by an adult. Some of the learning stations will include skeet shooting, fishing, air rifle and more.

All attending will be served lunch and are asked to dress appropriately for the day’s weather. Registration will be begin at 8:30 a.m. in the large pavilion, with the event set to begin at 9 a.m.

To be eligible for prizes at the end of the day, children must be present and have registered before 9 a.m. The chapter’s clubhouse is located approximately six miles straight up Files Creek Road in Beverly. The event will end at about 2 p.m. Those who would like to stay for the Family Campout may do so and enjoy some fishing.

For those who are only attending the Family Campout, registration will begin at 4 p.m. An adult must stay with those children attending overnight. “Sorry, no campers, only tents,” officials said. The evening meal will be prepared on an open campfire and snacks will also be provided. The evening will consist of games, fishing, fun and laughter. Anyone wishing to bring an outside game to share with the children is asked to please do so.

Breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning for those who braved the overnight stay. Everyone is invited to bring a friend and come to make new friends. Please note that overnight staying may be canceled due to bad weather.

State police offering testing events to fill cadet class

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia State Police is looking for applicants to fill the agency’s next cadet class.

Testing events are scheduled Thursday in Elkins, Friday in Morgantown and Saturday at the State Police Academy at Institute.

State troopers are getting a $10,000 pay raise beginning July 1 after state lawmakers passed SB 531 and Gov. Jim Justice signed it into law. That raise will bring the starting salary for a trooper, after training, to $55,784.

State police say walk-ins are welcome at the testing events. Those interested should arrive at the testing site no later that 8 a.m. on the scheduled day.

The Elkins testing site is located at 5190 Beverly Pike in Beverly; the Morgantown site at 3453 Monongahela Blvd; and Saturday at the Academy located at 135 Academy Drive in Dunbar.

Those interested can apply at wvsp.gov.

The event will include appetizers, dinner, and an egg hunt with ’90s retro tunes. There’s also a ‘meet and greet’ with the Easter Bunny.

A popular local farm in the Lower Mainland is welcoming guests to a couple of fun Easter events this spring. 

Located in Abbotsford, Maan Farms will offer two Easter-themed events this year: one family-friendly offering and a boozy egg hunt for adults. 

Children can interact with adorable farm animals and go on a fun Easter egg hunt at the Baby Animal Easter days (BAE days) event on the farm. There will also be a live Easter bunny, storytelling, and playtime at Barnyard Adventureland.  

Each ticket includes meeting the Easter Bunny, holding and interacting with six different baby animals (bunnies, ducklings, chicks, calves, goats, and pigs), admission to all seven attractions at  Barnyard Adventureland, an activity booklet for the scavenger hunt, eggs to be collected at each animal station to receive an Easter treat at the end of the day, and the opportunity to find the coveted golden egg for a chance to win the grand prize.

Mamma Maan’s culinary prowess will be on display in an array of homemade sweet treats including Rice Krispies Egg Nests, carrot cake, mini donuts, “egg-cellent” ice cream and savoury dishes, such as chickpea and butter chicken rice bowls.

What is Easter ice cream? 

The “Egg-cellent” ice cream includes a “caramel surprise”  inside of a handmade chocolate egg filled with creamy, soft swirl ice cream and topped with mini eggs.

Maan Farms is offering a Bunnies & Booze Easter egg hunt that is only for adults (ages 19 and up). The event will include appetizers, dinner, and an egg hunt with ’90s retro tunes. 

Each ticket includes the egg hunt with fun games, such as the spoon race, appetizers, dinner, an alcoholic beverage of beer or Maan Farm’s Estate Winery’s award-winning berry wine, ‘meet and greet’ with the Easter Bunny,  and the egg hunt including a chance to find the golden egg to qualify for the grand prize.
